Samsung Electronics said Thursday it expects a gradual recovery in demand for its mobile devices and consumer electronics in the second half of the year.

The South Korean tech giant said that while risks remain, Samsung will respond to reviving demand through flexible supply chain management. Some of those risks include the persisting uncertainties from Covid-19, which has infected more than 17 million people worldwide, as well as growing competition.

For the memory business, demand for chips used in smartphones and gaming consoles are set to recover due to new product launches, according to Samsung. However, demand for chips used in data centers would remain uncertain due to "increased inventory levels of server customers."

Samsung shares rose 0.17% as of 1:51 p.m. HK/SIN after the company reported earlier that its operating profit for the three months that ended in June was in line with previous guidance.

Analysts have said that the profit-making memory business has powered a lot of Samsung's earnings recovery over the last several quarters. There is worry that data centers and cloud computing service providers may not spend as much buying new servers and memory chips for those servers in the second half of 2020. In the first half, demand for memory chips rose as the coronavirus pandemic forced millions of people to work from home and study online.

For the display panel business, where Samsung counts Apple as a customer, the firm said it expects a "full-fledged rebound in earnings from mobile displays" in the fourth quarter.

Second-quarter operating profit came in at 8.1 trillion Korean won ($6.81 billion), a 23% jump from a year ago, due to "firm demand" for memory chips and appliances as well as a one-off gain in the display business. Analysts say it was a one-time payment from Apple. Revenue fell about 6% from a year ago due to a fall in sales of smartphones and other devices.

Samsung will also unveil its new flagship smartphones including the Galaxy Note and likely a foldable device on Aug. 5 during its big "Galaxy Unpacked" event.

FORECAST SYNOPSIS

They say it's not the heat, it's the humidity. And the last few days lend some credence to that belief. Both yesterday and today saw high temperatures up around 90 degrees, a hot day by summer standards. However, Tuesday's 70-degree dew points were replaced by 60-degree dew points on Wednesday, making it noticeably more comfortable. Of course, it's tough for any 90-degree day to be defined as comfortable, so perhaps less uncomfortable is more appropriate. The humidity levels will inch back up over the next few days, and with a cold front sliding through later Thursday and settling just to our south on Friday, a few showers or a thunderstorm are possible, even though much of the time will remain dry. It's Saturday night and Sunday that will bring a better chance for some wet weather, as a more organized low pressure ripples along our front and brings the chance for some widespread showers and thunderstorms our way to wrap up the weekend. Temperature-wise, we will likely sneak in one more 90-degree day on Thursday before daily highs settle back into the mid to upper 80s thereafter. So early August, while still warmer than average and quite humid, doesn't look to feature as many 90-degree days as we've seen through most of July.

DETAILED FORECAST

TONIGHT

A weak cold front will drop south through upstate New York overnight and will send just a little more cloud cover in our direction. Regardless, skies should turn out no worse than partly cloudy and while most of the region should stay dry, a few of the showers and thunderstorms concentrated to our north may be able to sneak into northern parts of the Poconos or far northwestern New Jersey, but that's about as far south as any of this activity should get. Overnight lows will settle back into the upper 60s as humidity levels creep up just a bit.

THURSDAY

Our weak cold front will continue dropping south through the area during the day on Thursday, but have little sensible impact on our weather. Highs will again top out around 90 degrees under partly sunny skies, though dew points look to creep back up higher into the 60s during the day, making for more noticeable humidity. While a shower or thunderstorm can't be ruled out, most of the day remains dry, with a better chance of a few showers and thunderstorms late towards the evening and overnight hours, especially points south and east towards the Interstate 95 corridor as a disturbance ripples along a front to our south.

FRIDAY

Friday's rain chances will be highest in the morning and highest points south and east, from the Delaware Valley towards the shore as a front remains more or less stalled out across the Mid-Atlantic. Expect a mix of clouds and some sunshine, and a seasonably warm and humid day with highs easing back into the mid 80s. As a result of likely staying below 90 degrees, the week-long heat wave should come to an end for most of us.

THIS WEEKEND

Saturday looks to be the better day right now with tolerable humidity levels, at least partly sunny skies, and mainly dry weather. A shower or thunderstorm could sneak into areas south and west of the Lehigh Valley, but most of the day remains dry with seasonably warm highs again in the mid to upper 80s. As a more organized area of low pressure develops and lifts our front back up to the north later Saturday night and Sunday, chances for showers and thunderstorms will rise. Closer to the low track, the rain will be more widespread, while areas farther away only see scattered showers and storms. So if the low tracks up to our west, which is looking more likely, it's possible that Saturday night brings our best chance for rain with only scattered chances on Sunday as temps and humidity levels rise later in the weekend.

Samsung Unpacked: How to watch the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Note 20 announcement Aug. 5 - CNET

In one week, Samsung will host the Unpacked event online, during which the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Z Fold 2 are expected to be announced. The timing of the August event is curious, because just last week Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, an update to the Galaxy Z Flip that launched earlier this year. Samsung's Unpacked event takes place virtually on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT. Unpacked follows similar events by companies like Apple, which have shifted events online due to the coronavirus pandemic. Samsung will stream the event live from South Korea.

But you can join CNET before, during and after the event on its livestream hosted by Senior Editors Iyaz Akhtar and Bridget Carey, along with Editor At Large Jeff Bakalar. Senior Reporter Shara Tibken will make a special guest appearance before the event.

In a post in Samsung's online newsroom, the head of Samsung's mobile business, Tae-moon Roh, shared that the company will introduce five new devices at the event. Leaks and rumors point to two Galaxy Note 20 devices and the Galaxy Z Fold 2, which would be a follow-up to last year's Galaxy Fold.

Members of the media received an Unpacked event invitation with a picture of a copper-colored liquid splash. This could be a clue to the color of some, if not all of the new devices that will be announced. The video above shows the tip of an S-Pen stylus that comes with Galaxy Note devices. A circular drop of the copper-colored liquid drips from its tip.

Samsung will host a livestream of the event on its website.

　将棋の藤井聡太棋聖（18）の殺害予告を日本将棋連盟（東京都渋谷区）に送信し、業務を妨害したとして、警視庁は30日、住所不詳の会社員畠山拓也容疑者（43）を威力業務妨害容疑で逮捕し、発表した。

　原宿署によると、畠山容疑者は4日午後11時半ごろ、日本将棋連盟のホームページのお問い合わせフォームに、藤井棋聖を名指しして「対局を辞めさせなければ、殺害する！」などと記入して送信し、職員に警備を強化させるなどして連盟の業務を妨害した疑いがある。調べに容疑を認め、「テレビを見ていて態度にいらっとした」と供述。「こんな大事になるとは思わなかった。連盟と藤井さんに申し訳ない」とも話しているという。

　藤井棋聖の地元の愛知県瀬戸市役所にも6月23日に殺害予告の電話があり、県警が脅迫容疑を視野に捜査している。

Bayer Leverkusen director Rudi Voller has affirmed that there is no prospect of the club selling Chelsea target Kai Havertz before their Europa League run comes to an end.

Havertz, 21, has won rave reviews for his performances across the interrupted 2019-20 season, scoring 12 goals in 30 games to steer Bayer to fifth place in the Bundesliga.

While the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have been linked with the young Germany international's services, Chelsea appear to be in the driving seat.

Goal revealed on Tuesday that the Blues are preparing a formal bid after learning that he favours a move to London, with the aim of pushing down Leverkusen's asking price of €100m (£90m/$111m).

Any deal, however, will have to wait until Leverkusen's European adventure is over.

"It is set in stone," Voller fired when asked by Kicker whether Havertz would line up for the club in the Europa League. "There is no new stance."

Bayer resume their Europa League campaign on August 6, when they host Rangers in the second leg of the clubs' last-16 tie holding a 3-1 aggregate advantage from the opener.

While Chelsea believe the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic may prompt Leverkusen to accept a lower bid for Havertz, Voller is adamant the Londoners will have to pay market value.

"There will be no corona bonus," he added, before admitting: "No matter who the player is, this is a special transfer window."

Chelsea have wasted no time this summer in reinforcing, sealing the arrivals of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and RB Leipzig's Timo Werner well before the Premier League season ended.

And despite that considerable outlay manager Frank Lampard is open to further new faces, with Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak joining Havertz at the top of the club's reported wishlist.

"We'll see. I can't answer that one, we're not there yet," Lampard told reporters in July when asked about potential recruits in the transfer window.

"We have to focus on what's in front of us and we'll see. I wouldn't want to compare it to any other spending summer, we'll see how I feel and we feel as a club and if the squad needs strengthening or the balance needs changing.

"If it does and we make moves, great. At the moment we don't know."

■2020年の市場規模は、140億円の見通し、2021年には前年比約2.2倍 314億円に急拡大と予測
新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大に伴い、リアルな会場で開催されるライブエンターテインメント（以降リアルライブ）は、2020年2月頃より興行者による開催自粛が相次ぎ、従来のようなリアルライブの開催は困難な状況です。このためアーティストや興行者の収益機会は大きく減少、ぴあ総研によると、2020年のライブエンターテイメント全体の市場規模は1836億円、前年比70.8%減と見込まれる※2など、業界全体に深刻な影響を及ぼしています。

一方で、政府や地方自治体による外出自粛要請の影響を受けて消費者の巣ごもり需要が拡大、オンラインを介したライブコンテンツの視聴・消費機会は高まりつつあります。

従来プロモーション目的において、一部のアーティストによる大手動画配信サイトでの配信や、ミュージックビデオの配信などにとどまっていたライブコンテンツのデジタル活用は、コロナウイルス感染拡大をきっかけに本格的な収益獲得を目指す取り組みとして急速に進みました。

2020年春以降、デジタルならではのライブ演出をおこなう「SUPERLIVE by OPENREC」や、「ABEMA PPV」、次世代チケット販売プラットフォームの「ZAIKO」といった動画配信サービスをはじめ、多くの事業者がライブ動画配信を開始、2020年の夏には大型音楽アーティストによる興行が増えました。そのジャンルは音楽にとどまらず、舞台や朗読劇、声優イベントなど、コアなファンコミュニティーを伴ったジャンルのアーティストを皮切りに、デジタル化対応が進みました。また、ドームからライブハウスまで、幅広い動員観客規模のライブがデジタル化されました。

2020年のデジタルライブエンターテイメント市場規模は、140億円に達し、翌2021年には、前年比約2.2倍の314億円規模と急拡大すると予測されます。

■デジタル化進展における課題と取り組み
デジタルライブエンターテインメントが今後さらに普及していくためには、リアルライブにおけるアーティストと双方向のコミュニケーションを、オンライン上でいかに再現することができ、放送音楽番組との差別化を図ることができるかが、課題の一つです。

無観客ライブにおける演出の一環として、リアルライブで行われているアーティストと観客とのコール＆レスポンスをオンライン上で再現する演出や、ライブ視聴者の姿を会場の巨大スクリーンに映し出すなど、視聴者参加型の取り組みが、各社の工夫により行われております。

また、収益面においては、リアルライブにおいて、アーティストの大きな収益源の一つであるライブグッズの会場販売の代わりにECサイト・グッズストアへの集客促進を図り購入を促し、品ぞろえの拡充による"売るための工夫"や、オンラインくじの提供などのオンラインならではの仕組みを取り入れた興行も増えつつあります。

新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大にともない、ライブ興行者側からのデジタルライブの実施についての問い合わせ件数が日ごとに増え、動画配信プラットフォームはタイトなスケジュールの中での「サービス開発として実現可能なもの」「収益性」を考慮すると全てのライブエンターテイメントのデジタル化に対応しきれない現状課題もあるなかにおいて、今後は、ドームクラスに限らず、ライブハウス規模や、劇場型などの中小規模のエンタメ興行のデジタル化への取り組みにも期待が寄せられています。

2021年以降は、新型コロナウイルス感染拡大への対策が進み、リアルライブ需要は2019年以前の水準に向けて緩やかな拡大基調を続けることが予想されます。その一方で、リアルライブにおける感染症対策を前提にした物理的な収容人員の抑制などによる収益機会の減少を補う手段として、デジタルライブ配信による収益拡大を図る取り組みは、不可逆的に進むことが予想されます。

今後は、CG合成技術を活用するなどにより、今までにない新しい表現を用いたデジタルならではの新しいユーザー体験を、収容人数の制限なく幅広いファンに対して届けることが可能となります。

また、ライブ終了後にもビデオチャットツールを活用したファンとの新しいコミュニケーションや、Eコマースを有効活用した限定グッズの発売など、従来の方法に縛られない新しいビジネス機会が生まれており、周辺産業への波及効果も期待されます。

　将棋の藤井聡太棋聖（１８）を脅迫するメールを日本将棋連盟（東京都渋谷区）に送ったとして、警視庁原宿署は３０日、住所不詳、会社員の男（４３）を威力業務妨害容疑で逮捕した。

　原宿署幹部によると、男は７月４日午後１１時半頃、自身のスマートフォンから同連盟ホームページの「お問い合わせフォーム」に「（藤井棋聖の）対局を続けるなら殺害する」などと書き込んで送信し、藤井棋聖の警護などの対応を取らせて同連盟の業務を妨害した疑い。容疑を認めている。

　藤井棋聖は当時、棋聖戦五番勝負で連勝し、タイトル獲得に１勝と迫っていた。

「エヴァンゲリオン京都基地」のでっかい初号機に乗ってきた！内覧会の様子をレポート - ねとらぼ

　東映太秦映画村で、エヴァンゲリオンに乗れるそうです。映画村で。エヴァンゲリオンに。太秦映画村かあ……小学生の頃に修学旅行で行ったなあ……。でもあそこって時代劇に出てくる建物ばっかりじゃなかったっけ？　そこにエヴァ？　なんで？

　取り合わせが謎すぎて、一回聞いただけでは何が何だか不明……。なんでも8月1日からプレミアム先行体験としてお客さんを入れるんだそうで、聞けばその前に特別に中身を見せてもらえるとのこと。一体現地はどういうことになっているのか。先日関西に引っ越した強みを生かして、一足先にのぞきに行ってきました。京都駅から嵯峨野線に乗って太秦駅へ。太秦って京都駅から意外に距離があるな〜もっと近いと思ってた〜とボンヤリ電車に乗っていたら……。

あれ!?

スーッ…………

　今、なんかいたぞ!!　つーかこれネタバレでは!?　電車の窓にいきなり現れた初号機に動揺しつつ、電車は太秦駅で停車。しかし太秦駅という名前ではあるものの、実は映画村の正面入り口に近いのはJR嵯峨野線の「太秦駅」ではなく、嵐電の「太秦広隆寺駅」の方。太秦駅から映画村にアクセスしようとすると、いわば裏口にあたる撮影所側入り口から入ることになってしまうのです（そちらからも映画村への入場自体は可能）。

　ということで付近をプラプラ歩きつつ、映画村の敷地をぐるっと回って正面入り口を目指すことに。

　敷地の周囲をぐるっと回り、映画村の駐車場の横を歩いていると……。

あ〜、いるなぁ……

　すでに駐車場から見えてるんですよね、初号機。というわけで正面入り口に到着。普通はここでチケットを買って入場するのです。

こっちが正面の建物。ここから入るのだ

　ということで時代劇ムード漂う村内を抜け、早速初号機と対面させてもらうことになったのですが……。

デケ〜〜〜〜〜！！！！ちょっと笑っちゃうくらいデカい！！

人と並ぶとこんな感じ。ちなみにこのお二人は東映京都撮影所所属のいわすとおるさんと中村彩実さんという俳優さんなのです

手のひらに乗って見上げると余計にデカい。威圧感があるな……

　聞けばこの初号機は設定のおよそ8割程度の大きさだそうです。こんなにデカいのに8割……？　とはいえエヴァは劇中で割と大きさが伸び縮みするため、厳密にサイズが決めにくいんだそうで、まあそうですよねという感じです。ちなみにこの半身像は肩の一番上までの高さが15メートルあるんだとか。デカいわけだわ。

　それにしてもなんで映画村にエヴァが……という点も聞いてみたところ、実は映画村は「時代劇や映画のほかにも、アニメやヒーローなど日本のコンテンツを楽しめるテーマパーク」を目指しているのだとか。そのためには京都に立ち寄った観光客に気軽に入村してもらって、日本のコンテンツを幅広く楽しんでほしい。その第一歩として、初号機が映画村に建立されたのだそうです。なるほど、この初号機は国際的な京都の新名所を目指しているわけですね。

　で、この巨大初号機周辺は正式には「エヴァンゲリオン京都基地」と名前がついております。京都に使徒の反応を探知したNERVは「第三新京都市支部」を設立、それに伴って太秦に建設されたのがこの新基地。さらに新しいパイロットを必要とするNERVは新規搭乗者の公募を決定。基地を訪れた人は内部で適性検査をされ、シンクロ率を測定して初号機エントリープラグへの登場テストを受けるという筋立てです。ということはおれがエヴァのパイロットになる可能性があるのか……参ったな……。

おなじみNERVのマークも京都仕様の作り起こし

　それではレッツ適性検査！　来場者は配られたIDカードに印刷されたQRコードを読み取り、全身をスキャンされます。ちなみにここでしゃべってくれるミサトさんのセリフなど、場内の音声は新録。手間かかってんな！

　エントリープラグにたどり着くまでの階段には、パイロット適正心理検査や学科試験などが配置されており、行列に並んでいる時も間がもつようになってます。ちなみにこの適正心理検査は試験結果にも影響するので、待ち時間に是非ともやっておきましょう。

　ということで初号機の背中に到着。景色は猛烈によく、遠くの方には京都タワーも見えています。で、いよいよエントリープラグに搭乗＆適性検査！　ここはフォトスポットになっており、コックピットに座った写真を自動で撮影してもらえます。ここでの検査が終了したら、階段を下って地上へ。

しかし初号機の頭の後ろのぐるっと回りこんでる板みたいなやつの裏、この位置から見たことなかったな……こんなモールド入ってたんだ……

地上に戻る途中の階段には、京都がえらいことになっている撮影スポットが！　ATフィールドをバリバリ破ってる写真が撮れるぞ！

　最後には、それまでの検査結果を踏まえたシンクロ率の発表が。残念ながらおれのシンクロ率は15.7%の丁種合格。エヴァに乗らなくてすんでホッとしたような、残念なような……。

　ちなみに「やっぱ14歳に近かったりするとシンクロ率が上がったりするんですか」と担当の方に聞いてみたところ、「他の要素も見ています……」とのこと。詳しい判定の基準は秘密らしく、あんまり詳しく教えてくれませんでした。残念……！

　せっかく初号機に乗ったからには、記念写真と一緒に自慢したいもの。ということで、エントリープラグに乗った状態以外にも、手のひらに乗ったところを遠隔操作で撮影してくれるカメラ、さらにお立ち台と専属のカメラマンさんも会場に配置！　合計4カ所のフォトスポットで写真が撮れます。

　そして撮った写真は村内の「NERV PHOTO」で購入可能。撮影した写真は、1枚目は1500円、2枚目以降は各500円で購入できるのです。さらに1枚写真を買えば上の写真のクリアファイル、2枚以上買った人にはアルバムまでもらえる上に、IDカードに印刷されているQRコードにアクセスすると画像データもダウンロード可能。「その場でTwitterに画像上げないと死ぬ〜〜〜!!」というツイ廃のみなさまも安心ですね。

　さらに場内では限定イベントショータイムも。初号機が使徒に侵食され、LCLがバンバン噴射されてどえらいことになります。こちらの音声も全部新録だし、さらにコラボグッズのイラストも映画村のための描きおろし。なんつーか、やっぱ手間かかってんな！

　ちなみにちょっと地味なポイントなんですが、初号機の胸から下が浸かってるこのLCL、赤い底面に透明な水を張っているのではなく、ちゃんと赤い色の液体が流し込まれているので、近くで見るとけっこうギョッとします。日常生活でここまで大量の赤い液体を目にすることがないので……。

　これだけ遊べば喉も渇くし腹も減る……ということで、村内ではコラボグッズやコラボフードもいろいろと販売予定。LCLや初号機をイメージしたドリンク、さらに「NERVカレー初号機Ver.」という、紫色のカレーも食べられます。「どんな味だよ紫のカレーって……」とめちゃくちゃ気になったものの、この日は残念ながら提供しておらず。おれも行った人から感想を聞こうと思います。

　この「エヴァンゲリオン京都基地」は、8月1日〜8月16日までの毎日と、8月22日〜9月27日までの土日の間、プレミアム先行体験という形で公開を決定。時間と人数を絞りつつ、限定版の参加特典付きで初号機に乗り込むことができます。現在8月16日までのチケットはすでに完売。8月22日〜9月13日までのスケジュールのチケットが、8月4日までの販売期間で受付中となっています。新型コロナウイルスの影響もあって、来場者を絞っての先行体験が長めになっているのです。

　そして、10月3日以降は一般入場者向けにグランドオープン！　こちらに関しても10月の時点での状況を見つつなので変更の可能性はありますが、いずれはチケットの争奪戦なしで一般開放する予定とのこと。

　京都の新名所として人気スポットになりそうです。とにかく「エヴァはデカいのでヤバい」「あと、これがポンと置ける映画村は広い」というのを身を以て体感できるエヴァンゲリオン京都基地。修学旅行以来、映画村に行ってないな……という人も、是非とも京都まで足を伸ばしてみてはどうでしょうか。

Exhibition games are a great opportunity to shake off the rust and get ready for the playoffs. Thanks to the Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals, the NHL's Situation Room got in on the action during Wednesday's game.

Midway through the first period, Hurricanes defenseman Jake Gardiner threw the puck at the Caps' net. The initial shot was stopped by Washington goaltender Braden Holtby, but the puck deflected off the goalpost and came to rest near the goal line. Capitals defenseman Nic Dowd and Carolina's Nino Niederreiter both made a play for the puck, with the contact knocking Dowd off balance, sending him crashing into the crossbar.

The puck ended up in the net. So did Trocheck.

The goal was immediately waved off by referee Francis Charron, who ruled that the net had been displaced.

Charron and ref Chris Lee headed over to check with the league's Situation Room, which is operating as usual from their normal location in Toronto. After a three-minute review, the verdict came down.

"Video Review determined that the actions of Capitals forward Nic Dowd caused the net to be displaced from its moorings prior to the puck crossing the goal line. Therefore, the referees awarded Hurricanes forward Vincent Trocheck a goal."

The net was clearly dislodged before the puck went in. Since that was the result of the actions of a defending player and the puck would've gone in if the net were in its proper position, the goal was allowed to stand – or, in this case, is awarded.

Here's the relevant part of Rule 63.6:

"In the event that the goal post is displaced, either deliberately or accidentally, by a defending player, prior to the puck crossing the goal line between the normal position of the goalposts, the Referee may award a goal. In order to award a goal in this situation, the goal post must have been displaced by the actions of a defending player, the attacking player must have an imminent scoring opportunity prior to the goal post being displaced, and it must be determined that the puck would have entered the net between the normal position of the goal posts."
"The goal frame is considered to be displaced if either or both goal pegs are no longer in their respective holes in the ice, or the net has come completely off one or both pegs, prior to or as the puck enters the goal."

China accuses US diplomats in Chengdu of interference - Prensa Latina

Beijing, Jul 24 (Prensa Latina) China on Friday accused the officials from the Consulate of the United States in Chengdu of perpetrating acts of interference alien to their diplomatic duties, shortly after it announced the closure of that office.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin said that his Government had repeatedly sent notes of protest to the US Embassy here, because several officials from that mission interfered in the country's internal affairs.

The spokesman revealed the information after the operations of the Consulate in Chengdu were suspended on Friday morning in reciprocity for a similar action taken by Washington against the Chinese Consulate in Houston, exacerbating tensions between the two powers.

The Foreign Ministry informed the US Embassy about the revocation of the license for the consulate, economic activities and all the functions of the diplomatic mission, which must be closed in 72 hours.

According to the spokesman, the United States caused this incident with its unilateral and surprise decision to close the Chinese Consulate in Houston, an action that he described as a serious violation of international protocols and treaties.

China also called on the White House to take a step back in its decision to close the Chinese Consulate in Houston and to create the conditions necessary to normalize bilateral relations.

NEW YORK -- There's a powerful message taking over social media that is showing up in the form of black and white photos of women.

Claire Sulmers, founder of Fashion Bomb Daily and a social media influencer, is one of millions of women around the world taking part in the latest challenge sweeping social media to empower women.

"It was a wonderful nice note in my in box unexpected," Sulmers said.

Here's how it works: post a single black and white photo of yourself with the hashtag #ChallengeAccepted and then nominate another lady to do the same.

Instagram says roughly 3 million pictures have been uploaded. Facebook users are also involved.

"I do think it's signaling a trend of women supporting women and supporting entrepreneurs, those who are ambitious, those who we admire and not being afraid or ashamed to proclaim that in a social setting," Sulmers said.

Back in 2016 a similar campaign unfolded for cancer awareness.

While it's not completely clear how the challenge originated this time around, many online say it is believed to have started as a way to support victims of Femicide in Turkey -- others believe it is simply a movement to support and empower other women.

This round, there was a flood of photos after New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently gave a passionate speech on the floor about sexism after a male colleague was accused of calling her a derogatory name.

Lance Ulenoff is a technology expert and says this challenge is doing exact what social media is set up to do: spread information fast and with ease.

"Viral challenges like these, social media challenges like these, is a connection to a broader conversation outside of your home, outside of the space you've been living in for months, you get to feel like you're part of something bigger," Ulenoff said.

As far as what's next, some point out it could be what ignites a much bigger movement offline, but others worry, like so many other challenges in the past, it will fizzle and fade away.

"When the ice bucket challenge was happening, suddenly everyone was doing it, in a way that kind of, it was exciting because it did generate a lot of money for ALS, but it also kind of was no longer special," Ulenoff said.
