Massachusetts won’t get a break from the oppressive heat and humidity just yet.

A stretch of 90-degree weather that started Sunday will continue Wednesday and is expected to enter a fifth day on Friday.

Temperatures will reach the mid-to-upper 80s in Berkshire County and on the Cape and Islands on Wednesday. The rest of the state should see highs that break 90 degrees, the marker of a heat wave.

“Hot and humid weather continues through Thursday, then moderates to very warm for this weekend and early next week,” the National Weather Service said.

Showers and thunderstorms may reach the eastern slopes of the Berkshires late Wednesday as well, according to forecasters. A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for Western Massachusetts, where isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon and at night.

A few showers and storms are also expected Thursday afternoon into early Friday morning across Massachusetts.

Thursday will see “above normal temperatures” again as well that will hover around 90 degrees, but by Friday, highs should go “back to near normal” for late July, with temperatures only reaching the 80s, the National Weather Service said.

The heat this week has proven to be record-breaking for New England.

According to the National Weather Service, both Boston, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island saw their warmest July 28 low temperatures since the 1960s and 1910s respectively.

“It was a close call, but only two of our climate record sites broke (Providence) or tied (Boston) their record warmest low temperatures yesterday,” the National Weather Service tweeted. “Hartford and Worcester both cooled below record levels before the end of the day.”

For the past few days, forecasters have urged people to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms and keep out of the sun, warning of heat illness caused by high temperatures and humidity.
