The Foxes looked certain to be heading for a top-four finish, but have won just two of eight Premier League matches since the season resumed following a three-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic. Leicester will start the final game of the season against Manchester United a point behind their opponents and Chelsea, who are at home to Wolves for their own season-deciding clash. Rodgers insists it will be a good season for his side regardless of the outcome this weekend, as the Foxes have already improved upon their ninth-place finish from last season. T-Mobile is also offering customers a free one-year subscription to MLB.TV, which broadcasts baseball games live and on demand. The Athletic says its subscriber base is now around 1 million. The site is ad-free and accessible only with a subscription. The brand also produces nearly 150 podcasts. Both subscriptions usually cost $60 a year. The circumstances of Tang's arrest were not clear, but she has not been charged with espionage. US officials made the announcement just hours before Washington's deadline for Beijing to shutter its consulate in Houston, a move that triggered China to retaliate Friday by demanding the US close its consulate in Chengdu. Prosecutors earlier this week said that Tang concealed her connection to China's military in order to enter the US, lied to federal investigators about those links and subsequently tried to avoid arrest by taking refuge in the San Francisco consulate. During an interview with FBI agents on June 20, "Tang denied serving in the Chinese military, claimed she did not know the meaning of the insignia on her uniform, and that wearing a military uniform was required for attendance at FMMU because it was a military school," attorneys wrote in a July 20 court filing.  But in a search of her home and electronic media, FBI investigators "discovered photographs of her in the uniform of the Civilian Cadre of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA)" and that she had been employed as a researcher at the Fourth Military Medical University. She was charged with one count of visa fraud on June 26. The US officials also said Friday that China's Houston consulate was implicated in a fraud investigation at a Texas research institution. They charged that consulate officials "were directly involved in communications with researchers and guided them on what information to collect." Nationwide networkThe activities in Houston "are a microcosm, we believe, of a broader network of individuals in more than 25 cities. That network is supported through the consulates here," the Justice Department official said. "Consulates have been giving individuals in that network guidance on how to evade [and] obstruct our investigation. And you can infer from that the ability to task that (a) network of associates nationwide." The officials spoke a day after a speech by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that recast the US-China relationship in starkly competitive terms, telling an audience at the Nixon Library in California that "securing our freedoms from the Chinese Communist Party is the mission of our time and America is perfectly positioned to lead it." Referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping, Pompeo said: "We must admit our truth that should guide us in the years and decades to come, that if we want to have a free 21st century, and not the Chinese century of which Xi Jinping dreams, the old paradigm of blind engagement with China simply won't get it done," he said. "We must not continue it and we must not return to it."  The idea to close the Houston consulate emerged this spring after China interfered when US officials returned to the consulate in Wuhan, closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, to retrieve diplomatic materials, a senior State Department official told CNN. Chinese authorities refused to let the US officials leave Wuhan with the pouches, saying they had to search them before leaving, an aggressive move that violates the Vienna Convention, which governs diplomatic relations. The encounter left Pompeo irate, the State Department official said. The senior Justice Department official acknowledged that the US move against China's espionage won't yield many arrests. "By their very nature, consulates are a base of operations for foreign governments in the United States, including the intelligence services," the official said, but "the sum total of the Houston consulates activities went well over the line of what we're willing to accept." The official noted that although the activity of concern is illegal, it is "not necessarily amenable to criminal charges, among other reasons because of the diplomatic immunity that consulate officials enjoy." "You're not necessarily going to see many prosecutions tied specifically to the Houston consulate as a means of disrupting that activity," the official said in a call with reporters. "That tool just isn't as available to us in this context as it would be elsewhere." The official added that "the public examples and what I'm discussing here today are merely the tip of the iceberg at Houston." The US has given China until Friday afternoon to close the Houston facility. The Justice official said that unless the US "disrupted" the activity at the consulate there, it "threatened to become even more aggressive in Houston and at other Chinese consulates nationwide." "Our focus is on disrupting this activity out of Houston as well as deterring similar activity by Chinese officials and other consulates," they said in the call with reporters. "Closing the Houston consulate and presenting relocation of those officials accomplishes both of those goals." Espionage on a massive scaleA senior intelligence official who took part in the briefing for reporters said that the sheer scale of China's activity also means that the US is "not going to arrest our way out of" the challenge posed by Beijing's espionage activities. "The problem posed by China is too large, so we've changed our tack to focus on communication and understanding," they said. This official said that the US has seen a 1,300% increase "in cases related to economic espionage and China over the last 10 years." A lot of that increase is due to "enhanced communication and understanding of the threat," rather than a marked increase in Chinese activity, this official said. "China has always been doing this," the intelligence official said, but noted that the US had only begun to fully understand the breadth and depth of some of the recruitment efforts in the last three years or so. The senior intelligence official said the FBI has "about 2,000 active counterintelligence investigations tied to China, and we open a new case about every 10 hours." The senior Justice Department official told reporters that "of all the cases we've brought over time alleging the theft of trade secrets, about 60% of those cases have some connection to China." That official said that in 80% of those cases, the US has "the unclassified proof that allows us to allege that the crime was intended to benefit a government."  "We have, over time, seen consistently that China, meaning the People's Republic of China government, as well as the companies doing business there, represent a disproportionate share of our trade secrets and economic espionage prosecutions," they said. The Justice official said there was no one event that led the administration to decide to take a tougher line on the Houston consulate. The government could not pick a "straw that broke the camel's back," the official said. "It has been an increase in malign activity, intelligence activity over time. And at some point, you say enough is enough ... and then you decide who is one of the worst offenders." China struck back on Friday morning, when its Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China told the US Embassy in Beijing that it was withdrawing consent for the establishment and operation of the US Consulate General in Chengdu. The Foreign Ministry did not comment on whether the consulate had to be closed in 72 hours, instead saying "specific requirements" were outlined. China accused US consular personnel in Chengdu of interfering in China's internal affairs and harming its national security interests. US personnel at the consulate "engaged in activities inconsistent with their identities, they interfered in China's internal affairs, and harmed China's national security interest," said Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry. 30 days to get outWang added that China's move against the Chengdu consulate was a "legitimate and necessary response" to the US demand that China's Houston consulate be shut. The senior State Department official said the Chinese demand that the Chengdu consulate close was not the most aggressive escalatory move they could have taken. The US consulate there was "low hanging fruit," the official said, arguing that it would have been much more aggressive for China to go after the US consulate in Shanghai or Guangzhou. The best scenario, in the view of US officials, would have been if the Chinese had forced the closure of the US diplomatic facility in Wuhan -- which is the sister consulate to China's outpost in Houston -- given that it is already vacant due to the coronavirus pandemic. There were about 60 Chinese officials at the Houston consulate, the official said. They will have to evacuate the embassy by this afternoon. | Washington Post Settles Lawsuit With Student in Viral Protest Video - The New York Times Posted: 24 Jul 2020 07:47 PM PDT  The Washington Post settled a defamation lawsuit filed by the parents of a Kentucky teenager over the paper's coverage of his encounter with a Native American protester in Washington last year, an event that set off a national debate. The newspaper said on Friday that it had reached the settlement, but did not disclose the terms. "We are pleased that we have been able to reach a mutually agreeable resolution of the remaining claims in this lawsuit," said Kristine Coratti Kelly, a spokeswoman for The Post. The parents of Nicholas Sandmann, a student at Covington Catholic High School in Covington, Ky., had sued the paper for $250 million, claiming that The Post had "targeted and bullied" him in its coverage of the incident. The amount reflected the sum that Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, had paid to buy The Post in 2013. Attorneys for the Sandmann family did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The encounter between Mr. Sandmann, 16 at the time, and a Native American elder, Nathan Phillips, was captured on a widely shared video. It showed the student among his mostly white classmates, many of them wearing "Make America Great Again" hats, at the Lincoln Memorial. The students were in Washington to attend an anti-abortion rally when they ended up near Mr. Phillips and others from an Indigenous Peoples March. Mr. Phillips could be seen surrounded by a group of chanting students; at one point he and Mr. Sandmann were face to face. As the video was shared online, they quickly became avatars of a politically divided populace. | Singaporean man pleads guilty to spying for China in the US - CNN Posted: 24 Jul 2020 07:08 PM PDT Jun Wei Yeo, also known as Dickson Yeo, worked for Chinese intelligence for four or five years, recruiting Americans with access to sensitive information over the internet and commissioning them to write reports, which he then passed on to Beijing. "The Chinese Government uses an array of duplicity to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting Americans," United States Assistant Attorney General John Demers said in a statement. "Yeo was central to one such scheme, using career networking sites and a false consulting firm to lure Americans who might be of interest to the Chinese government. This is yet another example of the Chinese government's exploitation of the openness of American society." His guilty plea comes amid an ongoing crackdown on Chinese operatives in the US. On Friday, a Chinese military-linked scientist who had been hiding out in the country's San Francisco consulate surrendered to US authorities. Her arrest followed the shuttering of the Chinese consulate in Houston, which Washington has linked to espionage operations and Intellectual Property theft. That move sparked a major backlash from Beijing, which has ordered the closure of the US consulate in Chengdu, which it also accuses of being a hub of spying operations.  Fake consultancyAccording to prosecutors, Yeo was recruited by Chinese intelligence during a trip to Beijing around 2015, when he was studying for a doctorate from the National University of Singapore. He was offered money in exchange for political reports and information, and later asked to sign a contract with China's military, the People's Liberation Army (PLA). While he did not sign the contract, Yeo continued to work with Chinese intelligence operatives, who increasingly requested he focus on obtaining "non-public information" from the US, related to issues such as artificial intelligence and the ongoing US-China trade war. Yeo met with his intelligence handlers dozens of times, and when he traveled to China for these meetings he was regularly taken out of the customs lines and brought into a separate office for admission into the country, which he told prosecutors was intended to "conceal his identity when he traveled into China." As he increasingly targeted the US, Yeo set up a fake consultancy website and began soliciting resumes, receiving hundreds, including many from US military and government personnel with security clearances, which he would pass on to his Chinese handlers. One person he recruited in this way was a civilian working for the US Air Force on the F-35B military aircraft program, with a high-level security clearance. This person, who has not been identified by prosecutors, was having financial problems, and Yeo commissioned them to write a report for him. Yeo moved to the US around January 2019, after which his handlers told him not to communicate with them for fear of interception. When he had to get in touch, Yeo was told to do so from a local coffee shop. It's unclear how and when Yeo was arrested, but he was charged this year with acting as an "illegal agent of a foreign power without first notifying the Attorney General," and subsequently pleaded guilty. He is due to be sentenced in October, and faces up to 10 years in prison. | US agents enter Chinese consulate compound in Houston after deadline for closure passes - CNN Posted: 24 Jul 2020 06:08 PM PDT A series of black SUVs, trucks, two white vans and a locksmith's van entered the property as a crowd of observers and news cameras observed from the edge of the diplomatic compound. US officials speaking to reporters Friday said the consulate had been implicated in a fraud investigation at a Texas research institution and that Chinese consulate officials, "were directly involved in communications with researchers and guided them on what information to collect." The activities of consulate officials in Houston "are a microcosm, we believe, of a broader network of individuals in more than 25 cities that network is supported through the consulates here," a US Justice Department official said Friday. "Consulates have been giving individuals in that network guidance on how to evade [and] obstruct our investigation. And you can infer from that the ability to task that [a] network of associates nationwide." The complicated legal history of the case against Amy Locane includes three sentences imposed by two judges, as well as numerous appeals. It stems from a crash in March 2010 that killed Helene Seeman and seriously injured her husband, Fred, as they turned into their driveway in Montgomery Township in central New Jersey. Locane's case has bounced around the New Jersey court system for several years as prosecutors have sought a longer sentence than the one initially imposed by a judge in 2013. This week, an appeals court ruled that a different judge incorrectly resentenced her last year, and sent the case back for another sentencing. The ruling issued Wednesday also rejected Locane's argument that sentencing her again violates double jeopardy protections since she's already completed her sentence and parole term. James Wronko, Locane's attorney, said Friday he would appeal to the state Supreme Court, a process that could take several months to play out. "Ms. Locane has been out of prison for five years, and it's been two years since she completed parole," Wronko said. "During this entire time she has done everything they've asked her to do, and it's difficult to explain to her two girls why five years later, Mommy's being put back in prison." The actress contended the crash was an accident and that a third motorist, whose car Locane had bumped into at a traffic light minutes earlier, distracted her by honking at her and chasing her. The indictment didn't mention intoxication, but a state expert testified Locane's blood alcohol level was likely about three times the legal limit and that she was driving roughly 53 mph (85 kmh) in a 35-mph (56-kmh) zone at the time of the crash. She was convicted on several counts including vehicular manslaughter, and faced a sentencing range of five to 10 years on the most serious count. The state sought a seven-year sentence, but the trial judge sentenced her to three years. An appeals court ruled he misapplied the law, but at a resentencing, the same judge declined to give Locane additional time. This week's ruling criticized state Superior Court Judge Kevin Shanahan, who resentenced Locane last year to five years, for employing "a methodology all his own" and ignoring an earlier appeals court's instructions on how he should weigh mitigating and aggravating factors in the case. The appeals court also held that Locane waived double jeopardy protections when she voluntarily began serving her initial sentence while the state was still appealing it. "When the government timely appeals an initial sentence or a sentence imposed at a re-sentencing, a defendant is put on notice that the sentence may change and he or she cannot acquire a legitimate expectation of finality," the judges wrote. The family of Nicholas Sandmann sued the Post for $250 million along with other news outlets for defamation over their coverage of the teen who traveled to Washington in January 2019 as part of a school trip from Kentucky. The Post admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement with the Sandmann family. Neither side disclosed the terms of the settlement, which allows both parties to avoid a potentially lengthy trial. Sandmann celebrated the settlement on Twitter. "Thanks to my family and millions of you who have stood your ground by supporting me," he wrote. "I still have more to do."
The Kentucky teen was at the center of a national news story last year when his Covington Catholic High School group attended the annual anti-abortion March for Life rally at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. A first video that went viral showed Sandmann, who was wearing a Make America Great Again hat, and his face-to-face encounter with Nathan Phillips, a Native American man who was attending the Indigenous Peoples March on the same day. Philips, who was chanting and beating a drum, said the high school students blocked his path and accused them of ridiculing him. A later video provided additional context for the encounter that included a group of men from a group called Black Hebrew Israelites who were seen taunting the students from Sandmann's school. The Post said Sandman's family accused the paper of casting the episode in political terms, saying it had "targeted and bullied" the teenager to embarrass U.S. President Donald Trump. The paper has maintained that its reporting of the incident was accurate and fair. It said it was entitled to report Phillips' view of the encounter and said it also reported Sandmann's account once it was available. Last July, a federal judge in Kentucky dismissed the Sandmanns' suit against the Post, but later reinstated the lawsuit while limiting its scope. "We are pleased that we have been able to reach a mutually agreeable resolution of the remaining claims of the lawsuit," said Post spokesperson Kris Coratti. The Sandmann family has also sued several other new organizations, including CNN, which settled with the family in July. The terms of that settlement were also undisclosed.
