LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — The Sachem Central School District today completed its re-entry plan for September and submitted it to New York State for review.
Governor Andrew Cuomo required every school district in the state to submit a re-entry for the state’s review by today’s deadline. Cuomo previously said the state will decide during the first week of August when and how schools, including the Sachem Central School District, will reopen this fall.
Sachem’s 79-page plan provides details about three reopening models: a full return with social distancing, blended learning, or distance learning.
New York State, the Reimagine Education Advisory Council, and the Department of Health released finalized guidance and guiding principles on July 13 for the development of school re-entry plans. The topics addressed by the state’s guidance—which must be part of each school district’s re-entry plan—included: masks / personal protective equipment, social distancing, cohort structures, restructuring space to maximize in-class instruction, transportation, food service, aftercare and extracurriculars, screening, tracing, and cleaning and disinfecting.
"New York State continues to closely monitor alarming COVID-19 numbers throughout the nation as we flatten the curve, slow the spread and proceed with a data-driven, phased reopening," Cuomo said today. "So much of our ability to fight this destructive virus is dependent on what each of us does in day-to-day life, and social distancing, wearing masks and washing hands make a huge difference as we stay New York Smart.”
School district re-entry plans are part of the process to control the spread as the state continues to reopen.
Sachem’s re-entry plan was developed by the Board of Education, administration, and re-entry committee members, which included educators, staff, and community volunteers.
The comprehensive document began by noting, “This re-entry plan is the collaborative effort of the Sachem Board of Education, administration, staff, and community. It was written utilizing the latest guidance from Federal and State authorities, including those issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).”
The plan also stressed that a final directive about school re-entry will come from New York State.
“The issuance of this document comes ahead of the final decision by New York’s Governor on re-entry in September, and which model we might be directed to utilize; a full return with social distancing, blended learning, or distance learning. Subsequent changes or directives from State or Local authorities may require revisions to this plan. Regardless of the situation, Sachem’s District Re-Entry Planning Team is committed to detailing a plan that is the best for the students and staff of the Sachem Central School District.”
Sachem’s full plan is available for download from the district’s website.
