Thousands of college students across Alabama are currently being tested for coronavirus under the GuideSafe Entry Testing plan.
Thirteen testing locations are offering COVID-19 testing more than 200,000 college students ahead of the fall semester. GuideSafe is supported by $30 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act funding. Testing began Aug. 4, but has ramped up as schools inch closer to starting fall classes.
Several colleges and universities require COVID-19 testing prior to a student’s return to campus. GuideSafe offers testing free of charge for all students, regardless of whether their particular school requires testing.
Dr. Mike Saag, director of the UAB Division of Infectious Diseases, said the 13 test collection sites have been operating at various locations across the state, and will now be placed on college campuses.
“I’m pleased that numbers have been relatively low so far, but that’s also the mission of this project,” Saag said. “Not only to see the positivity rates are as students are returning to campus but to watch each campus over time.”
Saag said he believes ongoing testing would help stop the spread of COVID-19.
“Testing which is targeted to a random selection of students on campus weekly to see if there will be any change and that will help administrators understand what’s going on, on their campus and ultimately keep the campuses as safe as possible,” Saag said.
College students will receive a link from their school, through which they can select a site, time, and day for testing. Most of the tests will be sent to UAB for results. For more information, go to: guidesafe.org/testing.
