James Davison is doing an Indianapolis – Daytona double.
After placing his No. 51 car 27th on the grid for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing on Saturday, Davison will fly south overnight to compete in the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race on the Daytona International Speedway Road Course on Sunday.

The challenge has been made possible thanks to Rick Ware Racing and Jonathan Byrd’s Racing who has partnered together to field the entry for Davison’s efforts in both divisions this month.
At Indianapolis, Davison is piloting a car owned by Dale Coyne Racing in association with Byrd, Ware and Belardi Racing.
Davison has also made his first five Cup Series appearances this season, two under the Spire Motorsports label at Pocono and the past three with Ware at Loudon and Michigan.
The Australian had entered 2020 wanting to tackle many of the marquee events in North America. It started at the Chili Bowl Nationals in January and Davison had planned to race with Ware at the Rolex 24 a few weeks later after racing together in the Asian Le Mans Series in 2019.
That fell through, as did his planned debut in the Daytona 500, but his schedule still features the Indianapolis 500 and several NASCAR races. The diverse racer has also made a pair of appearances in a USAC Silver Crown car over the past two seasons.
Davison also established himself as a perennial contender in the IndyCar iRacing Challenge during the opening months of the pandemic.
"I've really enjoyed myself this year, and also, the iRacing deal was awesome," Davison told Autoweek on Friday. "It created a situation where everyone had an even chance to shine with with fixed set-ups and fixed track conditions. The cars were just painted different colors. There was no such thing as a Team Penske. There were no disadvantages.
"It was fun to run competitively in the top-three in those races for our sponsors since they were on TV."
The 33-year-old finds himself especially drawn to stock cars right now.
"The NASCAR stuff has been a great experience," Davison said. "There isn't, obviously, the kind of parity that you have in IndyCar so you have to swallow your pride a bit and know you can only do your best against the guys that have the same equipment as you in the back. But it's a way for me to get a start and establish my skill set.
"I'm playing sort of the long game with that. Maybe in a year or two I can have an improved skill set and take advantage of the new car."
Davison has enjoyed the diversity of tracks and competition packages while learning the NASCAR landscape this season.
"Yeah, I drove the high downforce car at Pocono and Michigan, and the low downforce car at Loudon," Davison said. "I certainly enjoy both formulas. I did enjoy Loudon, how continually busy you are, how often you have to stay on the wheel.
"It was a big challenge because I saw it as the complete opposite of IndyCar. Front engine. Rear engine. High center of gravity. Low center of gravity. Downforce. No downforce. 3600 pounds. 1700 pounds. The heat in the car is pretty crazy. I’ve enjoyed it and I hope to do more of the NASCAR stuff."
By virtue of making the trip south, Davison will forgo Indianapolis 500 practice time on Sunday, while hoping for no rain on Friday’s Carb Day practice session. However, he received both the blessing and support of his IndyCar team.
