PALATINE, IL — Palatine Township Elementary District 15 announced Friday it has delayed its re-entry to in-person instruction to Sept. 21 after several staff members tested positive for the coronavirus following new teacher orientation the week prior. In an email to parents Friday, Superintendent Laurie Heinz announced the delayed start date and details to a modified schedule just two days after the first day of remote learning. The new date to start rolling re-entry falls nearly two weeks later than the original targeted date of Sept. 8, according to the district.
"Unfortunately, despite layers of new safety protocols, we have already had four staff members across four schools and one outside contractor working on a summer construction project test positive for COVID-19 following new teacher orientation and the return of staff to buildings last week," Heinz said in the letter. "After intensive contact tracing efforts by District nurses and administrators, more than 30 staff members were identified as close contacts and are currently in self-isolation for 14 days, as mandated by IDPH. The revised and narrowed IDPH definition states anyone near a COVID-19 positive person for 15 cumulative minutes as opposed to consecutive is considered a close contact."
Heinz added they aren't aware of any case-to-case transmission or anyone in close contact contracting the virus.
According to Heinz, the following dates are included in the district's updated rolling re-entry plan:
- Sept. 21: Kindergarten and K-8 self-contained special education programs — CLA: ACES, Multiple Needs (MN), Early Childhood SIP: Half-day only (9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.); transition to a full- or extended-day starting on Oct. 13
- Sept. 28: Grades 1-2 and self-contained early childhood.
- Oct. 5: Grades 3-4
- Oct. 13: Grades 5-8 and ECDEC/blended early childhood (junior high in hybrid model)
Heinz also detailed new mandates from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), including a requirement "for custodians and nurses to wear fit-tested N95 masks when cleaning a space occupied by a person with any COVID-19 symptoms, or when evaluating a person exhibiting symptoms."
"District 15 placed an order for the N95 masks, but the shipment will take a while due to nationwide shortages," Heinz said, in the letter. "The masks will have to be professionally fitted, which will not happen by Sept. 8."
Heinz also provided information on continued meal deliveries, childcare options, and a link to the district's virtual learning website where families can get questions answered about instruction, tech support and assessment, among other topics. However, Heinz added that when it comes to questions related to a child's assignments, schedule or instruction, the first person parents should contact should be the child's teacher.
"We will continue to update you on any changes to our plans as soon as new information becomes available," Heinz wrote.
