Government never expected all four vaccines to pass stage three trials: PM - Sky News Australia Posted: 10 Dec 2020 10:09 PM PST Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the government never expect all four vaccines under consideration to pass stage three trials. University of Queensland's potential coronavirus vaccine with biotech company CSL has been abandoned after multiple trial participants returned false positive HIV test results. "Our vaccine strategy, and our vaccine policy, had identified four vaccines that we believed, based on the scientific advice, had the potential to go through to the end of stage three trials and be available here in Australia," Mr Morrison said. "At no stage ... we believed that all four of those vaccines would likely get through that process. "If that had occurred, that would have been truly extraordinary based on the process of vaccine development, not only in this country but anywhere else." Mr Morrison thanked the team at the University of Queensland for their "amazing work" and said the government will continue to support their molecular clamp research on vaccines which has applications in other areas. "I'm incredibly proud of all of our scientists for the awesome work that they've been doing to support us this year," he said. Hackers break into Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine data in Europe - FRANCE 24 English Posted: 10 Dec 2020 08:08 PM PST Issued on: Documents related to the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine were illegally accessed during a cyberattack at the EU regulator, the company said Wednesday, as Germany and other northern hemisphere countries grappled with a winter surge in the pandemic. Advertising The Amsterdam-based European Medicines Agency (EMA) reported the cyberattack as European countries eagerly await a vaccine, including Germany where Chancellor Angela Merkel is pushing for tougher action against a second wave of Covid-19 that is proving deadlier than the first there. While the EMA did not give details on the attack, Pfizer and BioNTech said documents relating to their vaccine candidate had been accessed, but that "no systems have been breached in connection with this incident." The EMA has promised to reach a decision on conditional approval for Pfizer/BioNTech's vaccine by December 29, with a ruling on Moderna's version to follow by January 12. Canada on Wednesday became the latest nation to approve the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, a day after Britain gave out the first approved vaccine jabs in the Western world. The United States is expected to follow suit within days, after a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel meets on the issue Thursday. But a top government scientist said the FDA would probably ask people with a known history of severe allergies not to take it—after two health care workers in Britain needed treatment for allergic reactions. UK warns people with serious allergies to avoid Pfizer vaccine after two adverse reactions The cyberattack comes after Britain accused Kremlin-linked hackers in July of targeting labs researching coronavirus vaccines and after a US newspaper reported that cybercriminals had tried to attack several pharmaceutical firms developing vaccines. They included Johnson & Johnson, Novavax, AstraZeneca and South Korean laboratories. Both Russia and China have already begun inoculation campaigns with domestically produced vaccines. The Russian space agency said on Wednesday it planned to offer the Sputnik coronavirus vaccine to cosmonauts but insisted it would be on a voluntary basis. Israel accepted its first shipment of the Pfizer vaccine on Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promising to be the first to be injected—although the vaccine has yet to pass regulatory hurdles there. "What is important to me is that Israeli citizens get vaccinated," he said. "I want to serve as an example to them." AU Commission chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat meanwhile said Wednesday that Africa must be among the first beneficiaries of the vaccines, adding that "those who have the (financial) means must not monopolize the vaccines." Coronavirus pandemic: Poor left behind as rich nations 'hoarding vaccines' The virus has now killed more than 1.5 million worldwide since it emerged in China late last year. Change 'for the better' In Germany, where the daily death toll hit a new high of 590 on Wednesday, Merkel urged regions to take more drastic action to curb the virus spread, after state leaders agreed to ease what are already comparatively modest social restrictions for the Christmas holidays. Merkel has been in no mood for celebration, repeatedly urging regional leaders who have responsibility for health policies to clamp down more strongly. "If we have too many contacts before Christmas and it ends up being the last Christmas with the grandparents, then we'd really have failed," she said. Bavaria tightens Covid-19 restrictions as Germany sees record Covid-19 deaths Two weeks ago, Germany's states agreed rules limiting social mixing to five people but agreed to double the limit to 10 for the holiday season—something Merkel argued against. Divisions laid bare The United States is also mired in political rows over an epidemic that has killed more than 280,000 — the world's heaviest toll. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday that sought to guarantee access to vaccines for all Americans, but critics immediately queried what legal force it could have given drug firms have already signed contracts with other countries. Joe Biden, who will take over from Trump in January and unveiled a plan for 100 million jabs in his first 100 days, has urged Congress to come up with funding to prevent vaccine distribution from stalling. As America's politicians grappled over resources to fight Covid-19, a new study showed that the country's 651 billionaires have seen their wealth rise by more than $1 trillion since the start of the pandemic, according to the Institute for Policy Studies and Americans for Tax Fairness. At the other end of the spectrum, experts are warning that hunger in the Philippines has reached new levels thanks in part to restrictions that have crippled the economy and left many without livelihoods. Posted: 10 Dec 2020 08:08 PM PST Scott Morrison SLAMS social media anti-vaxxers after Australia's promising coronavirus vaccine was sensationally scrapped – saying it's 'pretty stupid' to get medical advice from Facebook or Twitter
Scott Morrison has slammed anti-vaxxers for seeking medical advice online, stating it is 'pretty stupid' to rely on updates from social media. It comes as trials for an Australian-developed coronavirus vaccine were officially scrapped on Friday. The University of Queensland's proposed vaccine for Covid-19, which was highly anticipated, will not proceed to phase 3 clinical trials after it was found to be a risk of false-positive results for HIV. The vaccine was developed in partnership with pharmaceutical company CSL, with the government ordering 51 million doses. Following Friday's development, the Prime Minister said Australians should always look to seek medical advice from qualified experts and never take updates on social media as gospel. Scott Morrison (pictured above) has slammed anti-vaxxers for seeking medical advice online, stating it is 'pretty stupid' to rely on updates from social media Anti-vaxxers in Australia (pictured above) have been encouraged not to take medical updates on social media as read 'I don't suggest that people take their medical advice from Facebook or Twitter,' he said. 'I think that would be pretty stupid to do that, and I know Australians aren't stupid. 'Always go to the official voice, always go to your doctor, always go to the medical advice, not to social media.' Leading Australian vaccine scientist Nikolai Petrovsky had warned the government about the risk of including HIV in a vaccine trial months before the $1billion deal was signed. He said the problem with the use of HIV was clear in the 'hamster and mouse data' but his advice was ignored. Mr Petrovsky told The Australian the issues were with the level of antibodies they were generating against the clamp which were against HIV. He said the early data suggested the vaccine itself was quite unstable. 'Overall it just didn't look like it was going to be a successful vaccine, that's why we were surprised when the government committed millions of dollars to it, it just seemed disproportionate.' Prime Minister Scott Morrison revealed on Friday he urgently ordered more of two other vaccines currently in late-stage trials. The government secured an extra 20 million doses of the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine, taking the total to 53.8million, and an extra 11million doses of the Novavax vaccine. Each vaccine requires two doses, meaning either of these jabs can vaccinate the whole population of 25million. There is also a deal for 10million doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, which is already being rolled out in the United Kingdom under emergency approval. University of Queensland vice chancellor, Professor Deborah Terry, said while Friday's outcome 'was disappointing', she was immensely proud of the UQ team who had shouldered a heavy burden of responsibility while the world watched on with interest. 'I also want to thank our many partners, our donors – including the Federal and Queensland Government – and of course the 216 Queenslanders who so willingly volunteered for the Phase 1 trials,' she said. 'This is why we made sure there were four contracts we signed to make sure that we got a vaccine and this is intrinsically very difficult science that UQ and around the world is trying to break,' he said. Health Minister Greg Hunt also revealed the vaccine roll-out could still be completed before the end of 2021 as currently predicted, despite Friday's setback. 'At the end of the day, 31 million new vaccines purchased for Australia, and the potential for a slightly earlier completion of the roll out with the commencement process still on track for March,' he said. The jab will first be offered to health workers and the vulnerable, such as the elderly and Indigenous Australians. Children are not classed as vulnerable and will not be prioritised. Walmart prepares to administer Covid vaccines at stores across the U.S. - CNBC Posted: 10 Dec 2020 05:08 PM PST A worker collects shopping carts at a Walmart store on May 19, 2020 in Chicago, Illinois. Walmart reported a 74% increase in U.S. online sales for the quarter that ended April 30, and a 10% increase in same store sales for the same period as the effects of the coronavirus helped to boost sales. Scott Olson | Getty Images Walmart is getting ready to administer Covid-19 vaccinations across the country once a vaccine is approved, the company's chief medical officer said Thursday. In a post on the company's website, Dr. Tom Van Gilder said the retailer is preparing its more than 5,000 stores and Sam's Club locations to receive the vaccine doses — such as having freezers and dry ice at pharmacies to store them at the right temperature. "I know we are all ready to get back to normal and enjoy life beyond the epidemic, and these vaccines will help us do that," he said. Walmart is one of several companies gearing up for coronavirus vaccines, especially as the much-awaited doses get closer to approval and availability in the U.S. There are six vaccine candidates, including one developed by Pfizer and BioNTech that a Food and Drug Administration panel recommended for emergency use at a meeting Thursday. If the FDA gives the final OK, it could become the first vaccine distributed in the country. As the coronavirus pandemic continues to rage nationwide, the vaccine's availability could help slow the spread and get the economy back on track. More than 15 million Americans have gotten sick and more than 286,000 have died from Covid-19, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Wednesday marked the deadliest day of the pandemic for the U.S., as the country recorded 3,124 new coronavirus deaths, according to a CNBC analysis of the data. Health-care workers and residents and staff at long-term care facilities should be the first in line for the Covid-19 vaccines, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but states and jurisdictions will ultimately decide who is prioritized. CVS Health and Walgreens have struck deals with the government to administer the vaccine to staff and residents at nursing homes and other facilities. On Thursday, CVS CEO Larry Merlo said on CNBC's "Squawk Box" that the company is ready to start vaccinations at those locations within 24 to 48 hours of receiving its share of vaccines. "Pending approval, I'm confident that we'll be in thousands of facilities before the Christmas holiday," he said. Gilder said Walmart is entering into agreements with states to be able to offer vaccinations at pharmacies or other locations, such as long-term care facilities. He did not specify the states or any agreements that the company has signed. A Walmart spokesperson declined to share additional details. He said Walmart has begun to tackle other challenges that could slow down or complicate a widespread rollout to the general public, including educating employees about the vaccine so they're informed ahead of time. Walmart is also thinking through a process to help people keep track of their first and second doses of the vaccine. The vaccines that require two doses must be separated by 21 or 28 days, depending on which one, and that timing boosts effectiveness. Gilder said Walmart already has health-care staff who administer millions of doses of other vaccines. He said it's uniquely positioned to help get the vaccine to many Americans. "With 90% of the American population living within 10 miles of a Walmart, we will play an important part in making sure those who want a vaccine can get one when they are eligible based on their state's prioritization, especially those in hard to reach parts of the country that have recently been hit hard by the epidemic," he said. 2020-12-10 22:05:35Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiSmh0dHBzOi8vbmV3cy55YWhvby5jby5qcC9hcnRpY2xlcy9mMGRjYzRmMjk5MTJkZDM4ZDhjM2RkN2NkNzUzZGRiZDEwNjhiMTQ40gEA?oc=5 |
2020-12-10 21:00:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiI2h0dHBzOi8vYnVuc2h1bi5qcC9hcnRpY2xlcy8tLzQyMTMx0gEA?oc=5 |
