Fall foliage surrounds Salmon River Falls

FIERY AUTUMN COLORS ENVELOP SALMON RIVER FALLS: While some have said the autumn colors have been somewhat muted this year in Upstate New York, brilliant color is there if you search for it. We visited Pulaski and Salmon River Falls and found a spectacular mix of reds, yellows and orange. Check out this drone video to see more spectacular color and scenery. (N. Scott Trimble photo)

What’s Trending

“What we are desperate for are places to put people”: The emergency room at Upstate University Hospital gets so overcrowded at times the hospital is considering using an outdoor tent to temporarily handle patients arriving by ambulance. That comes after a summer when local emergency rooms set a record for how often they temporarily closed their doors to ambulance patients. Those are signs of how a chronic nursing shortage amid a pandemic coupled with a surge of patients have pushed to the limit Syracuse hospitals, ambulance services and other health providers in the region.

Teachable moment for CNY school district: Last week, Okwaho Patterson, an eighth-grader, was sitting in his technology class at LaFayette Junior-Senior High School working with scissors to help build a model bridge. All of a sudden, Okwaho, 12, turned around and saw a friend clutching a fistful of Okwako’s hair in one hand and scissors in the other. The student, in a moment of impulsiveness, had forcibly cut Okwaho’s hair. Okwaho’s family does not want the student punished, though, instead hoping that the incident will become a teaching moment for the LaFayette schools and lead to a better cultural understanding.

Both parties put the brakes on McMahon’s aquarium, sports complex:The Onondaga County Legislature on Friday used its budget powers to slow down County Executive Ryan McMahon’s proposal to build an $85 million aquarium and a $25 million sports complex. In a rare bipartisan voice, leaders of both parties in the 17-member legislature said they need more than two weeks to digest the idea and present it to the public before voting.

2021 Elections

Katko keeps building war chest: Rep. John Katko continued to show his fundraising resiliency in the face of opposition from former president Donald Trump and some of his supporters in Central New York, raising about $488,000 in the last quarter, his strongest fundraising quarter of the year.

Syracuse school board candidates on the issues: There are six candidates vying for three spots on the Syracuse school district’s board of education. We asked all the candidates to answer questions about busing, school resource officers and graduation rates. Here’s what they said.

Syracuse Orange place kicker Andre Szmyt (91) reacts after missing a potential game tying field goal to end the game in a loss vs. Clemson at the Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y., Friday October 15, 2021. Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com

Another frustrating loss for the Orange: It’s becoming an agonizingly familiar story: The Syracuse football team finds itself on the verge of a big win, only to see it slip away in frustrating fashion. On Friday night, Orange fans watched a potential game-tying field goal fall short and wide as the Clemson Tigers escaped the Carrier Dome with a 17-14 win over SU.

Syracuse QB Tommy DeVito to enter transfer portal: Syracuse backup quarterback Tommy DeVito, who lost the starting job to Mississippi State transfer Garrett Shrader heading into the fourth game of the season, said on Sunday night that he plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, which will allow him to pursue college football at another school.
