Dell’s latest device recognizes that there’s a surge in demand for inexpensive Chromebooks as many kids and teachers switch to virtual learning environments. The Chromebook 3100 from Dell is about as entry-level as it gets with its small display, huge bezels and black all-plastic build.
There’s an integrated webcam and spill-resistant keyboard. This Chromebook was built with durability in mind. Dell says the device can withstand 30-inch drops onto steel and will last through “thousands of 4-inch micro-drops from multiple angles,”.
There’s an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 px non-touch display, 4GB of LPDDR4 2400 MHz RAM, and either 16 or 32GB of eMMC storage. Internally, there’s a dual-core Intel Celeron processor with optional Intel XMM 7350 Global LTE model.
The 42Wh battery is rated for a solid 14 hours of use and the Chromebook supports 65W USB-C charging. The device comes with two USB-A ports, two USB-C 3.1 ports (but the LTE variant only has one port. There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack on board as well.
This Chromebook is marketed for the education segment but will eventually be available for general consumers. Dell says pricing and availability will be announced this spring.
