European Commission’s “appallingly slow vaccine purchase procedures” has impeded Hungary’s government from lifting the Coronavirus restrictions currently in place, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has noted.
Szijjártó has blamed the European Commission for the delay of the population’s vaccination, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
“In the wake of Brussels’s pledges at the end of last year and at the beginning of 2021 it was expected that the EU would start vaccination with enormous speed, and restrictions in member countries could be eased,” Minister Szijjártó told MTI, adding that “it has not happened out of the EC’s fault,” Hungary’s government has stressed.
According to the minister, the European Union’s vaccines reached member states a little late, while in the meantime persons in the United States, the United Kingdom and Israel were being “inoculated at lightning speed”.
“This has created a scandalous situation, especially in light of the EC launching continuous attacks on countries, including us, trying to obtain vaccines from other sources,” Szijjártó highlighted.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban previously announced that Hungary would prolong its existing COVID-19 restrictions until at least February 1, in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19 infections.
“Existing restrictions will be extended until February 1,” Orban pointed out.
Earlier this week, authorities in Hungary revealed a new strain of the Coronavirus pandemic, which was first detected in the United Kingdom, soon after the country lifted the ban imposed on passenger flights from Britain.
Hungary has registered over 349,140 COVID-19 cases of infections, up to this point, while 11,177 have died from the disease, according to the statistics published by Worldometers.
However, back in December, Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport announced that it would partially resume its work on its Pier 1 terminal section while the Pier 2 transit area will completely resume its work.
In a bid to facilitate the movement amid the ongoing pandemic outbreak in countries worldwide, the governments of several countries are working on a “vaccine passport”, which would help persons travel to countries in which vaccination would become mandatory for entry.
