After a national championship in 2020-21, Alabama will have to reset their roster after a key staple of players enter the 2021 NFL Draft. On Thursday, one of their top receivers announced his intentions.

Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle announced his intentions to enter the NFL Draft after his final season with the Crimson Tide. Waddle missed a good chunk of the season with an ankle injury but somehow returned to play in the national championship against Ohio State.

He made it official on Thursday afternoon.

#Alabama WR Jaylen Waddle announces he will enter the 2021 NFL Draft,” BamaOnline’s Charlie Potter tweeted.

During the 2020 season, Waddle finished with 28 catches, 591 yards, four touchdowns and 21.1 yards per catch in just six games. In 34 career games at Alabama, Waddle finished with 106 catches, 1,999 yards, 17 touchdowns and 18.9 yards per catch.

The 2021 NFL Draft decision process is unlike any other before it. Because of the uncertainty surrounding the 2020 college season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, players that exhausted their eligibility at the college level may still opt to return for next season.

And on the other side of the conversation, college football saw a record number of opt outs for both COVID-19 reasons and in order to prepare for the NFL Draft. The preseason saw many projected stars choose to step away from the field to prepare, including Penn State’s Micah Parsons, LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase, Georgia’s Jamie Newman, Oregon’s Penei Sewell and Miami’s Gregory Rousseau. Midseason opt outs and the decision to skip bowl games were also a common place in 2020.

Activities like the NFL Scouting Combine and pro days remain uncertain due to the COVID-19 climate while the NFL Draft is scheduled to run April 29 through May 1. Last year’s NFL Draft took place virtually, including commissioner Roger Goodell announcing picks from his home. Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow was the No. 1 overall pick.
