Another player on Michigan’s ever-changing defense is looking to depart.

Phillip Paea, a member of the Wolverines’ star-studded 2017 recruiting class, entered his name into the NCAA’s transfer portal on Wednesday, a Michigan team spokesman confirmed to MLive.

Paea, who is set to graduate this spring, said in a post on social media that his decision came “after a long discussion with my family and countless prayers.” He has three years of eligibility remaining.

“I wanna first thank Coach (Jim) Harbaugh for giving me and my family this life changing opportunity to play and to get a education at the University of Michigan,” Paea wrote in a note on Twitter.

“I also wanna thank Coach (Shaun) Nua, Coach (Ben) Herbert, Coach (Don) Brown, Coach (Mike) Macdonald and Abigail (O’Connor) along with all the other coaches and staff for always looking out for me.”

Paea went on to write he is “forever grateful for my time in Ann Arbor” and “looks forward to the next chapter in my life.”

The 6-foot-4, 302-pound lineman hardly played during his Michigan tenure, appearing in just three games over the course of four seasons. He redshirted his freshman season before moving to the offensive line in 2018, when he appeared in two games at guard.

But he failed to crack the rotation in 2019, instead serving as a scout team member on defense. Paea appeared in one game during the abbreviated 2020 season, at defensive tackle and on special teams in a lopsided loss to Wisconsin.

A Michigan native, Paea was ranked as a three-star prospect out of Berrien Springs High School, where he was named Division 5-6 player of the year and twice earned first-team all-state honors from the Associated Press.

He never factored in to the depth chart for 2021, so his departure is negligible from an on-the-field standpoint. But it noteworthy nonetheless, and comes just three months after the introduction of a new defensive coordinator, Mike Macdonald, and overhaul of the coaching staff.

Paea is the sixth defensive player from Michigan to enter his name into the NCAA’s transfer portal since the end of the 2020 season, and 13th overall. He follows safety Hunter Reynolds and linebacker William Mohan, both of whom entered the portal last week.

The Wolverines concluded their 15-practice spring schedule on Saturday with a closed-to-the-public scrimmage in Ann Arbor.
