Rising senior for the Virginia Cavaliers’, Trey Murphy III, announced on Tuesday that he will enter the NBA Draft, while maintaining his eligibility. This is not unexpected after Murphy III had a very successful season with the Hoos in 2020-21, averaging 11.3 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.
Murphy announced his decision on Twitter, saying, “Playing in the NBA has always been a dream of mine. A goal that I want to accomplish.”
With the departures of Sam Hauser, Jay Huff, and Tomas Woldetensae to graduation and Casey Morsell (NC State), Justin McKoy (UNC), and Jabri Abdur-Rahim (Georgia) to transfer, Murphy III would be a huge piece on both ends of the court if he decides to return.
Players that declare for the draft have until 5pm on July 19th to withdraw and return to school, should they choose to do so. Mamadi Diakite tested the waters before the 2019-20 season, and Jay Huff did the same before the 2020-21 season, before both ultimately decided to return to Virginia for one final season.
Murphy III was one of three players that shot over 40% from three for the Cavaliers last season. He also shot 62% from two and 93% from the free throw line, and Murphy III had one of the lowest turnover rates on the team at 9.8%.
His best performance of the season came against Towson in the opener as he scored 21 points and hit 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. Murphy III hit 18 points in wins over NC State and Georgia Tech, and he helped the Hoos lock up the No. 1 spot in the ACC standings with 17 points at Louisville.
ESPN Insider has Murphy III going to Detroit at No. 41 in their latest mock draft, while The Athletic has him going at No. 37.
Virginia adding transfers Armaan Franklin (Indiana) and Jayden Gardner (ECU) over the past week has helped round out the roster, but the Cavaliers have a chance to be elite next season if Murphy III returns.
