Dawson Racing Transformers Effort Resurfaces

Four years after it was initially announced, the long-delayed entry of Dawson Racing into IMSA competition with Hasbro backing as ‘D3+Transformers’, the effort fielding the #84 Ligier JS P320 in the LMP3 class at back to back races at Watkins Glen, the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen on June 27 and the WeatherTech 240 on July 2.

The team’s Ligier will be driven by Dominic Cicero and Theodor Olsen in both races, with Ben Devlin joining them for the six-hour endurance event.

Dawson Racing is managed by the father/son duo of Ian and Simon Dawson:

“We’re very happy to finally roll out the D3+Transformers race program,” said team CEO Ian Dawson. “Simon and I have worked on this concept for a number of years and have now got the program where we want it and finally getting on track at Watkins Glen with IMSA. The support and faith Hasbro has shown us on this collaborative project has been incredible and we can’t wait to have the Transformers car on track and launch the brand to the racing world.”

Olsen, a former Norway Athlete of the Year, will be making his WeatherTech Championship debut, but Cicero and Devlin are no strangers to IMSA competition. Cicero appeared in 23 IMSA top-tier series races from 2004-2009, making three starts at Watkins Glen. More recently, he drove an LMP3 in the IMSA Prototype Challenge.

Devlin counts four wins among his 64 IMSA starts from 2001-2016, including an SRPII class win in 2001 at Watkins Glen in a non-endurance event.

“The D3+Transformers racing platform has been a long time in the making,” said Matt Proulx, Vice President, Location Based Entertainment. “Ian and Simon have expanded the D3+Transformers concept over time, and we are truly ecstatic over the direction that they have taken it. We appreciate their focus on family values and how diligently they have worked to create the most exciting and engaging program for the Transformers brand and the most ideal way to get it launched on track.”

Wright Confirm Season Reshuffle

Heading into the fifth event of the IMSA season, Wright Motorsports has announced changes to the driver lineup of the #16 Porsche 911 GT3 R in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Trent Hindman will replace full-season driver Ryan Hardwick to race alongside Patrick Long in the GTD-class championship while Hardwick continues his championship efforts in the Michelin Pilot Challenge with Jan Heylen in the #16 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport in the GS class.

2019 GTD Champion Hindman first joined the team’s GTD effort in January’s Rolex 24 At Daytona, after Hardwick withdrew from the meeting having suffered concussion in an incident in the practice session for the Daytona round of Michelin Pilot Challenge.

He stayed on board for the Twelve Hours of Sebring, racing alongside Patrick Long and Jan Heylen, earning a second-place result. Hardwick returned for the team’s home race at Mid-Ohio.

In Michelin Pilot Challenge, the team has secured two pole positions and two second-place finishes in its two races after missing the first race of the season following a re-race accident.

The changes will take effect for the remainder of the season.

NTe Sport Audi Returns

NTe Sport will return to competition for the first time since the Rolex 24 Hours in their #42 Audi R8 LMS at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen.

“We’ve been working hard to assemble a program to get us back on track for WeatherTech events,” said team owner Paul Mata. “We had a gearbox issue at Daytona in the final hours and have been working hard to make sure we get back out there to continue to race and grow at top levels like WeatherTech.”

Don Yount will return to the driving seat and be joined by Markus Palttala and Jaden Conwright.

“I’m excited for the lineup and opportunity to race in the Six Hours of the Glen,” said Yount. “It’s good to be reunited with Marcus Palttala. We won together at Watkins Glen in 2018 and will look to repeat the success this year. Jayden will be quick and great addition to the team for the race.”

“I’m looking forward to reuniting with Don, getting to know the team and Jaden, and to discover the Audi R8 LMS GT3,” said Palttala. “We’ve got some catching up to do, as this will be our first time working together as a group, but I’m confident we’ve got a package to fight for a good result.”

Twenty-two-year-old Jaden Conwright will make his IMSA WeatherTech GTD-class debut at the Six Hour, who began his motorsport career in 2009. After consistently climbing the motorsports later, over a decade later the Californian racer was slated to run in the 2020 Porsche Supercup but was forced to withdraw following international travel restrictions. The setback allowed Conwright to join NTe Sport in the Sebring International Raceway season finale of the Michelin Pilot Challenge, where he qualified fourth and near the front for the majority of his stint.

“I can’t thank Don, Paul, and everyone from NTe Sport for giving me an opportunity to make my IMSA Weathertech GTD debut,” said Conwright. “It was a pleasure running Sebring last year in the Michelin Pilot Challenge with the team and I’m honoured to be able to run with everyone again. Watkins Glen looks like an unbelievable circuit, and I can’t wait to hop into the car for free practice one!”
