Upon the completion of the season, Trey Leonard and Tim Borden have joined Kellan Tulio as the only active members of the Louisville baseball team to enter the transfer portal.
Leonard appeared in 45 games this season, starting 37 of them and seemed to be in a good position to contend for a starting role in the outfield next year. He finished the season batting .313, the third highest on the team, with 7 2B’s, 4 HR’s, and 25 RBI. He also added 7 stolen bases on 9 attempts.
His batting average hovered around the .400 mark for a majority of the season before taking a hit at the end of the year. Leonard’s speed on the base paths and ability to cover a lot of ground in the outfield will be missed.
Borden started 8 games this season and made an appearance in 21 with the majority of his game action coming towards the beginning of the year. He batted .220 with with 3 2B’s and 5 RBI.
In the shortened 2020 season, Borden was off to a hot start, hitting .444 with a home run, 2 2B’s, and 9 RBI in 27 plate appearances, but these numbers just did not translate to 2021.
It is my understanding that the coaching staff did not ask anyone to leave the program and is giving the players the opportunity to battle it out and earn their position on the field.
Good luck to both players going forward, wherever they land. Unless they end up at Kentucky, then I take it back.
