Kansas has picked up a number of transfers this spring after hiring former Buffalo coach Lance Leipold to replace Les Miles, but the Jayhawks will now lose a key contributor from last year's team. Sophomore cornerback Karon Prunty, a 247Sports True Freshman All-American last season, announced Sunday via Twitter that he plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal.
"First, I would like to thank (Kansas defensive backs) coach (Chevis) Jackson and coach Miles for believing in me, and giving me an opportunity to play for the University of Kansas football program and earn an education," Prunty wrote on Twitter. "I made life long friends while I was there and it was a very hard decision to make but I had to make this decision due to personal reasons. With that being said I've decided to enter the transfer portal. I want to thank the coaching staff, teammate, academic advisors and the fans for supporting me since the first day I stepped on campus."
The NCAA introduced the portal on Oct. 15, 2018, providing athletes a path to explore their options. Players do not need to ask permission from their coaching staff in order to transfer. They merely need to request that compliance enter their name. Usually, it takes 24-48 hours for a player to appear following their request. Schools are free to contact a player without restriction once their name appears in the portal.
While a player entering their name in the transfer portal means they intend to explore their options, it does not necessarily mean they will leave. A player is free to withdraw his name at any time. However, schools are under no obligation to keep a player on scholarship once they enter the portal.
The first portal cycle saw 1,942 FBS players enter in the initial calendar year of its existence, per a source.
