With the Council of the European Union recommending that the EU Member States should reimpose entry restrictions for Americans travelling for non-essential purposes, several EU countries have decided to follow such advice.

Even though the Council of the EU removed the US from the list of third countries considered epidemiologically safe, some European countries have considered that the Council’s advice to tighten restrictions for US arrivals is not legally binding, and each Member State can decide on its own whether they want to impose an entry ban for those travelling from the US or not, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Italy is the first EU country that decided to follow suit from the EU. The Italian authorities decided to impose strict entry rules for Americans since the US was removed from the list of epidemiologically safe countries.

Consequently, Italy now obliges all travellers from the US and those who have stayed there during the last 14 days to present a PCR or rapid antigen test results taken within 72 hours before entry, regardless of their vaccination status. In addition, everyone is required to fill in the digital passenger locator form.

Similarly, since September 1, Bulgaria has tightened the entry rules for Americans, as the country decided to place the US in its red category. As such, only US travellers who are exempt from the entry ban can enter the territory of Bulgaria.

“As of September 1, 2021, the United States will be considered a Red Zone country. That means persons arriving from the United States, regardless of their citizenship, are prohibited from entering Bulgaria unless they meet an exception,” the US Embassy in Bulgaria noted in a press release issued on August 31.

Denmark has also announced that from today, September 6, the country has banned entry to all unvaccinated travellers arriving from the US. However, the country’s authorities have emphasised that those who are reaching Denmark for essential purposes will be permitted entry.

In contrast, those who prove that they have been fully vaccinated with an EMA-approved vaccine will still be allowed entry without having to follow testing or self-isolation rules.

Following the example of the other EU Member States, Sweden also decided to reimpose stringent entry restrictions for US travellers. As a result, starting from today, only US nationals who are reaching Sweden for absolutely essential purposes will be permitted entry.

Nonetheless, the Swedish Ministry of Justice has highlighted that vaccinated travellers may soon be exempted from the entry ban.

In addition, in line with the recommendation from the EU Council, the Norwegian and Dutch authorities have also announced that they will tighten travel restrictions for arrivals from the US.

Authorities in the Netherlands have revealed that from September 6, travellers from the US will be required to present a negative COVID-19 test result upon arrival and follow a ten-day mandatory quarantine requirement. However, the quarantine period can be shortened if a negative test result is provided on the fifth day of self-isolation.

Except for the countries mentioned above, Belgium and Germany had also placed strict restrictions against arrivals from the US before the EU made a recommendation.
