With Kansas leading 17-7 over Oklahoma in the third quarter Saturday, the school made a surprise announcement in the middle of the game. The stadium gates are now open and no more tickets are required to enter the game, according to the Kansas Radio Network.
“Wow! They just announced on Kansas radio network that stadium gates are open, no more tickets required. ‘If you’re in town, come on down!’ Kansas 17, Oklahoma 7. 3Q,” Brian Davis of the Austin-American Statesman tweeted.
In an effort to pack the stadium to near capacity, Kansas wanted more Jayhawks fans in the seats in case they pulled off a massive midseason upset. After the announcement, Oklahoma promptly drove down the field and scored a touchdown, cutting Kansas’ lead to 17-14.
Oklahoma came into the game No. 3 in the country and undefeated, with freshman quarterback Caleb Williams starting his second straight game in place of Spencer Rattler.
“Just maybe Lincoln Riley finally has a quarterback he can grow from the bottom up after having two transfer Heisman quarterbacks in Baker Mayfield and (Kyler Murray),” former Texas Longhorn Brian Jones said on CBS Sports Network. “This Caleb Williams guys, oh, Superman. He's cooler than the cool kids. Four touchdowns, 295 yards the other night. He also had a rushing touchdown, and one touchdown was dropped. This guy has electrified the fan base and also those guys in that locker room. As a Longhorn, I hate it.”
On the season (five games), Williams is 40 of 59 passing (67.8% completion percentage) for 609 yards, six touchdowns, 215 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.
Kansas came into the contest 1-5 on the season.
