Chances are your reaction upon seeing the video will be "nope." Though old, the clip came into the limelight after being shared on Twitter. "What is this," with just this caption, a Twitter user shared the video which has now created quite a stir. Wondering what the video shows? The clip starts with something crawling which at first glance looks like a snake. As the video goes on, it becomes clear that the crawling thing is not a snake but a tentacle of an animal. By the end of the video, a starfish shaped creature with five tentacles appears. Take a look at the video to know what we're talking about.
If you're wondering "what is that?" or your first reaction is "nope, I don't like that!", then you are not alone. Since being shared, several people shared the same reaction on the post's comments section. There were also some who called it a "danger noodle." Not everyone was scared of the creature, just like this Twitter user who wrote, "It's cool, what is it?" A few took it upon themselves to spread awareness about this bizarre - and some would say very creepy – animal. "The ophiuroids or ophiura are a class of the Echinodermata edge. They have Pentaradial symmetry and have a starfish-like appearance, with five arms emerging from a central disc. Surely ophiuroids and asteroids are sister groups. There is variety, they are beautiful," they wrote. Turns out, they're not wrong. Also known as brittle stars, these creatures are found in the ocean, describes a blog by Ocean Conservancy. This anniversary may be especially bitter for South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who'd hoped that an unprecedented swirl of engagement and diplomacy between the rivals over the last two years could fundamentally change their relationship. Amid renewed threats of violence from Pyongyang, Moon's ambitious engagement plans are fading fast. North Korea has shown mixed signals in recent days. In a fit of symbolic rage, it blew up an empty liaison office with the South last week. But this week it appeared to shift speed by suspending purported plans to take unspecified retaliatory action against South Korea. Whatever the North's intentions, the promising flurry of diplomacy that saw North Korean leader Kim Jong Un meet multiple times with U.S., Chinese and South Korean leaders in a high-stakes play to settle a disarmament-for-aid deal has been replaced by a revival of ideological warfare. Seoul is now desperate to prevent relations from spiraling into crisis but also seems short on ideas on how to do so. North Korea over the past week has threatened to abandon a military agreement aimed at reducing tensions, and censured the South over lack of progress in bilateral cooperation and for failing to stop activists from floating anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border. The North's recent steps follow months of frustration over Seoul's unwillingness to defy U.S.-led sanctions over its nuclear weapons program and resume inter-Korean economic projects. Moon has proposed joint anti-virus efforts against COVID-19 and offered to send humanitarian aid, but that's unlikely to satisfy Kim as he struggles to keep afloat an economy crippled by sanctions and a pandemic that has hampered exchanges with China, the North's main ally and economic lifeline. The North may want a South Korean commitment to resume operations at a shuttered jointly-run factory park in the North Korean border city of Kaesong, which was where the liaison office was located, or to restart South Korean tours to the North's Diamond Mountain resort. But Seoul can't take such steps without rattling the international sanctions regime against the North and hurting the South Korean alliance with Washington, which has stuck to a hard line. "South Korea doesn't have many options," said Nam Sung-wook, a professor at the South's Korea University who formerly headed a think tank affiliated with Seoul's main spy agency. "We are the same Korean people but also (war) enemies. Achieving reconciliation and cooperation between the Koreas is not as easy as you might think." Moon, the son of North Korean war refugees who preaches that the South should lead international efforts to deal with the North, had been credited with coordinating a diplomatic push to settle the nuclear standoff. His envoys shuttled between Pyongyang and Washington to help set up the first meeting between Kim and President Donald Trump in Singapore in June 2018. But he has faced criticism of over-optimistically misreading Pyongyang's signals. Seoul ran into credibility problems once it became clear, during negotiations, that Kim had no intention of easily dealing away the nukes he likely sees as his strongest guarantee of survival. While Moon insisted that progress in inter-Korean relations could help create nuclear breakthroughs between Pyongyang and Washington, the North doesn't seem to see much value in Seoul if the South fails to squeeze concessions from Washington on Pyongyang's behalf. It remains to be seen whether Kim's decision this week to reverse his purported decision on an unspecified military action affects the North's plan to resume propaganda warfare. If Kim does opt for military action, it may be a resumption of military exercises or an order to have vessels deliberately cross the disputed western maritime border between the Koreas, which has seen bloody skirmishes in the past. However, any action is likely to be measured in a way to avoid a full-scale retaliation by the U.S. and South Korean militaries. Condemning Seoul over North Korean refugees in the South floating anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border, the North said Monday it printed 12 million of its own propaganda leaflets to be dropped over the South in what would be its largest ever anti-Seoul leafleting campaign. The North has a history of escalating provocations before pulling away from the brink and offering diplomacy aimed at extracting concessions from the South. A provocative run of nuclear and missile tests in 2017 saw Kim and Trump exchange crude insults and threats of nuclear annihilation. Tensions eased after Kim used the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea to initiate diplomacy with Moon and Trump. The Korean leaders met three times that year and issued vague pledges for a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula without describing when and how it would occur. They also vowed to restart South Korean tours to Diamond Mountain and operations at the Kaesong factory park when possible, expressing hope that sanctions would end. Those projects remain shelved amid stalled negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang, which began to implode after the second Kim-Trump meeting last year in Vietnam, where the Americans rejected North Korea's demands for major sanctions relief in exchange for a partial surrender of its nuclear capabilities. It would require major concessions for Moon's government to save its diplomacy with the North, said Hong Min, an analyst at Seoul's Korea Institute for National Unification. Suspending South Korea's summertime military exercises with the United States and legally punishing anti-Pyongyang activists for leafleting, which will trigger freedom of speech debates in the South, would barely get the North interested. Others question whether the recent diplomacy is worth saving amid fading denuclearization prospects. "South Korea needs to quickly shift its focus from developing inter-Korean relations to managing inter-Korean hostilities," said Cheong Seong-Chang, an analyst at South Korea's Sejong Institute. "If North Korea takes a hard swing (at the South), we should also sternly respond to make them realize they suffer too when inter-Korean relations turn hostile." | Global trade, down 18.5% in May, could have been worse - Marketplace.org Posted: 23 Jun 2020 11:08 PM PDT  Markets flipped out overnight after White House trade adviser Peter Navarro told Fox News that the U.S.-China trade deal was "over." Navarro then said he'd been quoted out of context, and President Donald Trump affirmed the deal is "fully intact." On the heels of that, the World Trade Organization reported Tuesday that global trade in the second quarter dropped 18.5% compared to last year. For context, that big a drop in trade is really bad. WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo spoke about the drop in a YouTube video. "It will be the steepest on record," Azevêdo said. "But there is an important silver lining here: The falling trade could have been much worse." Earlier estimates had trade falling more than 30% this year. Now it looks like the hit will be closer to 13%. Trade is about people wanting stuff in one country, then parts and labor coming together from other countries to get that thing to them. But that's tough to do in a pandemic. "If there's five different countries involved in making a blue widget with white polka dots, and if one of those countries is not operating at full capacity, then the rest of the supply chain either has to slow down, or stop, or find an alternative," said Christine McDaniel, a senior research fellow at the Mercatus Center. Earlier in the pandemic, a lot of trade just stopped. But now, said Geoffrey Gertz at the Brookings Institution, "we're entering this new phase where there seems to be these rolling blackouts of countries turning on and off their economies going in and out of lockdowns." Even as economies in Europe and the United States reopen, for now, more cases and lockdowns in Brazil, India and sub-Saharan Africa create more disruptions. Dawda Jawara, with Africa-focused investment firm Altica Partners, gave the example of a key port in Kenya. "If ships aren't coming into Mombasa, then raw materials and finished materials aren't being sold and distributed in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, all of the kind of inland countries," Jawara said. Keeping trade flowing requires countries to keep COVID-19 under control. But that's a big if, so the WTO and other trade groups create a best-case scenario, a worst-case scenario and cross their fingers. Last week, the North had declared relations with the South as fully ruptured, destroyed an inter-Korean liaison office in its territory and threatened unspecified military action to censure Seoul for a lack of progress in bilateral cooperation and for activists floating anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border. Analysts say North Korea, after weeks deliberately raising tensions, may be pulling away just enough to make room for South Korean concessions. If Kim does eventually opt for military action, he may resume artillery drills and other exercises in frontline areas or have vessels deliberately cross the disputed western maritime border between the Koreas, which has been the scene of bloody skirmishes in past years. However, any action is likely to be measured to prevent full-scale retaliation from South Korean and U.S. militaries. Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency said Kim presided by video conference over a meeting Tuesday of the ruling Workers' Party's Central Military Commission, which decided to postpone plans for military action against the South brought up by the North's military leaders. KCNA didn't specify why the decision was made. It said other discussions included bolstering the country's "war deterrent." Yoh Sang-key, spokesman of South Korea's Unification Ministry, said Seoul was "closely reviewing" the North's report but didn't further elaborate. Yoh also said it was the first report in state media of Kim holding a video conferencing meeting, but he didn't provide a specific answer when asked whether that would have something to do with the coronavirus. The North says there hasn't been a single COVID-19 case on its territory, but the claim is questioned by outside experts. Kim Dong-yub, an analyst from Seoul's Institute for Far Eastern Studies, said it's likely that the North is waiting for further action from the South to salvage ties from what it sees as a position of strength, rather than softening its stance on its rival. "What's clear is that the North said (the military action) was postponed, not canceled," said Kim, a former South Korean military official who participated in inter-Korean military negotiations. Other experts say the North would be seeking something major from the South, possibly a commitment to resume operations at a shuttered joint factory park in Kaesong, which was where the liaison office was located, or restart South Korean tours to the North's Diamond Mountain resort. Those steps are prohibited by the international sanctions against the North over its nuclear weapons program. "Now isn't the time for anyone in Seoul or Washington to be self-congratulatory about deterring North Korea," said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul. "There may be a pause in provocations or Pyongyang might temporarily deescalate in search of external concessions. But North Korea will almost certainly continue to bolster its so-called 'deterrent.' As long as the Kim regime refuses to denuclearize, it is likely to use Seoul as a scapegoat for its military modernization and domestic politics of economic struggle after failing to win sanctions relief." The public face of the North's recent bashing of the South has been Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of leader Kim Jong Un, who has been confirmed as his top official on inter-Korean affairs. Issuing harsh statements through state media, she had said the North's demolishing of the liaison office would be just the first in a series of retaliatory action against the "enemy" South and that she would leave it to the North's military to come up with the next steps. The General Staff of the North's military has said it would send troops to the mothballed inter-Korean cooperation sites in Kaesong and Diamond Mountain and restart military drills in frontline areas. Such steps would nullify a set of deals the Koreas reached during a flurry of diplomacy in 2018 that prohibited them from taking hostile action against each other. Also condemning the South over North Korean refugees floating anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border, the North said Monday it printed 12 million of its own propaganda leaflets to be dropped over the South in what would be its largest ever anti-Seoul leafleting campaign. It wasn't immediately clear whether Kim's decision to hold back military action would affect the country's plans for leafleting. The North's military had said it would open border areas on land and sea and provide protection for civilians involved in the leafleting campaigns. The North has a history of dialing up pressure against the South when it fails to get what it wants from the United States. The North's recent steps came after months of frustration over Seoul's unwillingness to defy U.S.-led sanctions and restart the inter-Korean economic projects that would breathe life into its broken economy. Nuclear negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington largely stalled after Kim's second summit with President Donald Trump last year in Vietnam, where the Americans rejected North Korea's demands for major sanctions relief in exchange for a partial surrender of its nuclear capabilities. | Apple's privacy-focused 'nutrition labels' for apps are only a start - Mashable Posted: 23 Jun 2020 10:08 PM PDT  Image: screenshot / apple Do you trust companies like Facebook to accurately and completely tell you how, and to what extent, their apps monitor and track you both on your phone and across the entire internet? The question is not a rhetorical one, as Apple's latest privacy push relies on the answer to that question being "yes." Most privacy policies are an unintelligible mess. This problem, thoroughly documented by the New York Times Privacy Project in 2019, is only compounded when people are forced to read the sprawling documents on their smartphones — squinting the entire time they scroll. Apple unveiled a new feature on Monday for the forthcoming iOS 14 intended to address this problem. The proposed solution is labels, similar to nutrition labels seen on the side of food packaging, that quickly and clearly tell users how an app uses their data. At face value, this idea sounds great. According to slides shared at WWDC, app labels would list out, in plain language, what data is linked to you and what data is used to track you. There's just one glaring problem: All the information in the label is self-reported by the companies and developers behind the apps. Katie Skinner, Apple's manager of user privacy software, explained the company's approach to the privacy labels during the WWDC presentation. "We'll show you what they tell us," she noted. "You can see if the developer is collecting a little bit of data on you, or a lot of data, or if they're sharing data with other companies to track you, and much more." Erik Neuenschwander, Apple's director of user privacy, detailed how this differs from Apple's current practices and how the company's plan was inspired by the humble nutrition label (this all begins around 58:22 in the above embedded video if you want to watch along).
This raises a lot of questions. For starters, how will Apple ensure that the self-reported data is accurate? If a company misrepresents the data it collects on app users, or omits key tracking practices on the privacy label, will Apple hold that company accountable? If so, how? And by when will Apple require all apps in the App Store to have such a privacy label? We reached out to multiple specific people at Apple, in addition to the general media contact with a host of questions, but received no response from the company. As things currently stand, Apple reserves the right to boot developers and their apps from the App Store for things like "[sharing] user data without user consent." It's unclear if Apple would take a similar step against, say, Facebook, for failing to list specific data-collection practices on its iOS app's privacy label.

Image: screenshot / apple To be clear, the goal of making privacy policies more digestible is a laudable one, and Apple should be cheered for this first step — but it is only a first step. Because, as things stand, the entire privacy-label proposition depends on companies being honest and forthright about what they do with users' data — something history has shown to be a dicey proposition. Just earlier this year, for example, Motherboard reported that Zoom's iOS app was sending users' data to Facebook. The app did this even if users did not not have a Facebook account, and without explicitly stating it did so in the iOS app's privacy policy. Getty Images | Bloomberg The Federal Communications Commission is kicking off its investigation of last week's T-Mobile outage by seeking public comment. Government agencies, public safety entities, businesses, and individuals are encouraged to submit comments about their experiences during the 13-hour outage. "We seek comment on the impact of these outages from the perspective of affected public safety entities, as well as state and local governments," the FCC said in a public notice today. "Are there estimates of how many calls, including 911 calls, failed or otherwise affected by the outage? What was the effect of the outage on public safety activities and government services across the country? Was there a disruption of data services relied on by public safety entities and state and local governments?" The outage "prevented customers from making calls, receiving calls, and in some cases, sending text messages over T-Mobile's Voice-over LTE (VoLTE) network," and social media reports indicated that 911 calling was affected, the FCC notice said. Besides government and public safety organizations, the FCC is seeking comment on "this outage's impact from the perspective of affected individual and enterprise consumers." The public notice asks these questions of businesses and individuals:
The FCC set a deadline of July 8 for submitting comments. The docket where comments can be filed online is available here. Read the public notice for instructions on how to submit comments by mail. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai called the outage "unacceptable" and said the FCC will be "demanding answers," as we reported last week. That doesn't mean T-Mobile will face any punishment. In a previous case, Pai called mobile carriers' response to Hurricane Michael in Florida "completely unacceptable," but imposed no punishment. T-Mobile's explanation of last week's network failure said "the trigger event is known to be a leased fiber circuit failure from a third-party provider in the Southeast." Mobile networks are designed to survive such failures, but in this case T-Mobile said its network "redundancy failed us and resulted in an overload situation that was then compounded by other factors." The overload then caused an "IP traffic storm that spread from the Southeast to create significant capacity issues across the IMS (IP multimedia Subsystem) core network that supports VoLTE calls." | T-Mobile Prices Shares at $103 Each in SoftBank Deal - Yahoo Finance Posted: 23 Jun 2020 08:44 PM PDT  (Bloomberg) -- T-Mobile US Inc. priced its shares at $103 apiece in a $20 billion-plus deal that will let co-owner SoftBank Group Corp. offload a stake in the wireless carrier, according to people familiar with situation. The mobile-phone company, controlled by Germany's Deutsche Telekom AG, laid out plans for the stock sale on Monday, but hadn't yet set a price for the shares. Nearly 200 million shares are changing hands as part of the complex transaction. SoftBank agreed to pay T-Mobile $300 million as part of the transaction and will cover all fees and expenses related to the deal. The company became a co-owner of T-Mobile with Deutsche Telekom after the carrier took over Sprint Corp. earlier this year in a $26.5 billion merger. At $103, the shares are selling at a nearly 4% discount to T-Mobile's $107.16 closing price on Tuesday. They have gained 37% this year. The deal, along with SoftBank plan to sell a 5% stake in its Japanese wireless subsidiary, is part of a broader $42 billion push to unload assets. The company aims to use the funds to finance stock buybacks and pay down debt. Masayoshi Son, the company's founder, is dealing with steep losses in his Vision Fund after writing down the value of investments in the sharing economy from WeWork to Uber Technologies Inc. SoftBank will now turn its attention to other assets in its portfolio and may pursue an outright sale of part of its stake in Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. | BTS and Big Hit Entertainment donate $1 million to help concert crews - CNN Posted: 23 Jun 2020 08:08 PM PDT  The donation by the Korean pop superstars and their management company was made to Live Nation's charity campaign, Crew Nation, which helps live show staffers who are out of work due to canceled events. Live Nation launched Crew Nation in March with initial donations of $10 million to help over 1,000 concert crew members. Some were scheduled to work on the BTS "Map of the Soul" Tour, which was postponed in April. "If it weren't for COVID-19, we would have been happily touring across the world with many of our live concert crews by now," the K-pop superstars said in a statement. "We are aware that a lot of communities need help due to COVID-19, and we wanted to support the music industry crews by making a donation. We hope to meet again on stage very soon." | T-Mobile wants out of pledge to create 1,000 California jobs - Los Angeles Times Posted: 23 Jun 2020 07:44 PM PDT  Less than three months into the life of the "new" T-Mobile US Inc., the self-proclaimed maverick mobile-phone carrier is already asking to roll back commitments it made in exchange for approval to buy its smaller rival Sprint Corp. T-Mobile — now the second-largest U.S. wireless carrier because of the April 1 merger — is asking California's Public Utilities Commission for a waiver of job mandates and network-speed milestones. Although T-Mobile promised to create 1,000 full-time jobs in California, the company said Tuesday that the state can't dictate hiring. The COVID-19 crisis "makes the imposition of a mandate to create additional jobs infeasible and unwarranted," it said in a filing with the commission. And instead of delivering wireless-connection speeds of 300 megabits per second to 93% of the state in four years, the company said that the documents should have said six years. Advertisement "We appreciate the willingness of the commission's staff and the commissioners to work with us to resolve our outstanding concerns and clarifications," T-Mobile said in a statement. As the lone holdout among the states, California granted conditional approval of the merger in mid-April, two weeks after the merger took place. The enlarged T-Mobile is off to a rocky start. Last week, as many as 68 million customers were hit with a daylong service outage, which drew a federal investigation. That same week, it pulled the plug on its T-Mobile TV venture, writing down $218 million in costs. T-Mobile also recently started shuffling its retail stores. Thousands of Metro and Sprint store employees are being displaced as they face the prospect of searching for different jobs at T-Mobile or leaving the company. 会見の最後には立ち上がり、ファンへメッセージを送った手越さん。 撮影：西山里緒 まず退所の理由について。一部では新型コロナウイルス感染拡大期の外出を週刊誌に報じられたことに端を発すると報じられていたが、手越さんはこれを否定。 実は、2020年3月時点ですでに事務所側に退所の意向を伝えていたと明かした。 そもそも、手越さんが退所を考えるようになったのは、5～6年ほど前からだったという。｢自分がやりたいことはあまりに多種多様｣であり、ジャニーズではその実現が難しかった旨を語った。
今年、NEWSは全国ツアー｢STORY｣を予定し、メンバーとの退所の話し合いを始めたのも、ツアー初日のゲネプロの後。 ツアー終了後のタイミングで退所を予定していた。ところが、昨今のコロナ禍でスケジュールが大きく変わってしまったという。 ジャニーズのネット進出は？これまでジャニーズ事務所は、インターネット上でのコンテンツ配信に慎重な姿勢で知られていた。 その風向きが変わったのは2017年ごろ。ウェブにも写真掲載を掲載を認めるようになり、さらにはNetflixやLINE LIVE、Instagram、YouTube、SHOWROOMなど、多様なプラットフォームで所属タレントが番組を持つようになった。 2019年3月からはジャニーズJr.の公式エンタメサイト｢ISLAND TV｣でライブ配信するなど、自社プラットフォームの構築にも積極的だ。 2019年末からは嵐の活動休止を追ったドキュメンタリー｢ARASHI's Diary -Voyage-｣がNetflixで独占配信されており、大きな話題を呼んだ。  退所組からの影響は｢1ミリもない｣

ここ数年を振り返ると、30代半ばに差し掛かったタイミングで、個人としてのキャリアをもっと積みたいとして、ジャニーズ事務所を退所するタレントもいる。 元関ジャニ∞の渋谷すばるさん（2018年末退所）や錦戸亮さん（2019年9月退所）、そして2014年に退所し、2020年からは錦戸さんとのユニット｢N/A｣を結成した元KAT-TUNの赤西仁さんなど｢退所組｣の活躍も目立つ。 手越さんは｢先にジャニーズを抜けた方々に影響を受けたというのは1ミリもない。完全に僕の意思｣としつつ、｢夢を持って抜けた方々はリスペクトしている｣と、先輩たちへの尊敬の思いを語った。 手越さん｢誰かが矢面に立って言わないと｣
会見後、手越さんは｢OPENREC｣を使ってライブ配信を行った。 画像：OPENREC 事務所はタレントを"家族"のように守る。その代わり、タレントは事務所に"忠誠"を誓う……。 いまだに芸能界ではこうした慣習が根強く、タレントが事務所から独立した場合はそれがトラブルに転じ、テレビなどの表舞台から姿を消して｢干される｣ことも珍しくなかった。 だが、少しずつではあるが、時代は変わりつつある。2019年7月には、公正取引委員会がジャニーズ事務所を注意したことが報道された。退所した元SMAPのメンバー3人のテレビ番組への出演を妨げるような働きかけがあった場合、独占禁止法違反につながる恐れがあるとの内容だ。 令和時代は、個人が人生のキャリアステップを自由に描ける時代だ。 それは芸能界に限った話ではない。転職・求人サービス｢doda｣の調査｢転職成功者の年齢調査（2019年上半期）｣によると、転職成功者の平均年齢は31.7歳だった。手越さんは現在32歳、ドンピシャの"転職世代"だ。
15歳から一つの組織に所属し、働いてきたキャリアを考えれば、外の世界やこの先の人生に思いを至し、これまでとは違うレールを走る選択もあるだろう。それが本人の成長やキャリアの広がりに繋がる可能性は十分ある。 手越さんは会見後のOPENREC.tvでの配信で、こんな言葉を述べている。
