Barcelona's most humiliating Champions League defeats, featuring Bayern and Liverpool - GIVEMESPORT Posted: 15 Aug 2020 12:08 AM PDT Barcelona's recent woes in the Champions League were compounded in devastating fashion on Friday night. The Blaugrana went into their quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich as the underdogs, but the majority of football fans still saw scope for Lionel Messi and co. to progress with an upset. However, any such suggestions were blown out of the water in spectacular fashion as Barca were on the end of a thrashing of generational proportions - shipping eight goals in Lisbon. Bayern Munich 8-2 BarcelonaStrikes from Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski as well as braces courtesy of Thomas Muller and Philippe Coutinho executed the historic thrashing. In terms of consolations for Barca, they had experienced minor hope thanks to David Alaba's equalising own goal, while Luis Suarez had briefly made the scores 4-2 after the break. However, there was no denying the better team on the night with the Bavarians not only booking themselves a place in the semi-finals, but plunging their opponents into disarray in the process. Barcelona's European woesAs we said at the top of the article, the 8-2 humiliation has compounded Barca's recent plight on the European stage and it's starting to feel as though the Champions League is their kryptonite. Such a devastating result has encouraged supporters to cast their minds back to matches of equal madness and Brazil 1-7 Germany seems to be the closest relative to Friday's events. Here at GIVEMESPORT, however, we've touched on some of football's most humiliating results very recently and we want to put Barcelona in particular under the spotlight. In fact, we've decided to shine a light on Barca's most humiliating Champions League defeats since Pep Guardiola took over in 2008 and 10 results immediately come to mind. Barcelona's 10 humiliationsSo, buckle yourselves in or - in the case of Barca fans - hide behind the sofa because here are the 10 times the Blaugrana have been humiliated in the Champions League over the last 12 years. 1. Barcelona 2-3 Shakhtar Donetsk (2008/09)We're starting light because, well, Barca actually won the Champions League in this particular season and Carles Puyol was hardly kicking himself about this group game when he lifted 'Big Ears' in Rome. So, sure, perhaps 'humiliation' is a strong word, but shipping three goals at home in a defeat to Shakhtar is certainly nothing that Guardiola will have taken a shred of pride in. 2. Barcelona 1-2 Rubin Kazan (2009/10)And there was to be more disappointment against Eastern European opposition at Camp Nou the following season in one of the biggest giant killings in Champions League history. The reigning champions found themselves 1-0 down within two minutes and although Zlatan Ibrahimovic drew the scores level, Gokdeniz Karadeniz scored a historic winner in the 73rd minute. 3. Celtic 2-1 Barcelona (2012/13)Look, Celtic are a legendary European side, so losing to the Glaswegians isn't too embarrassing on paper, but it's the iconic FIFA-like nature of the defeat that makes this a 'humiliation'. Barca somehow came up short at Celtic Park despite having 89% possession, taking 23 shots and making almost 800 more passes than their opponents. Oh, and it was 18-year-old Tony Watt, now of Motherwell, who scored the winner against Messi's star-studded side. 4. Bayern Munich 4-0 Barcelona (2012/13)Ah yes, this week isn't the first time that Bayern have dished out big fat humiliation on their Catalan rivals, romping to a 4-0 victory thanks to Thomas Muller's brace as well as goals from Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben. 5. Barcelona 0-3 Bayern Munich (2012/13)... and it arguably got even worse during the second leg as, frankly, Bayern looked like the home side at Camp Nou with strikes from Robben, Muller and a Gerard Pique own goal making it an astonishing 7-0 win on aggregate. 6. Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 Barcelona (2016/17)Now, you could probably contest this game's inclusion because, as we all know, Barca followed it up with one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history by winning the second leg 6-1 in Spain. But let's not pretend as though being hammered 4-0 at Parc des Princes, courtesy of goals from Angel Di Maria (x2), Julian Draxler and Edinson Cavani, wasn't humiliating immediately afterwards. 7. Juventus 3-0 Barcelona (2016/17)Ok, this might not have 'humiliation' written all over it, but we think it just about qualifies by way of Barcelona being rungs upon rungs below Juventus in quality during this brutal night in Turin. It says a lot that Paulo Dybala was the best Argentine forward on the day, helping himself to a brace, while Giorgio Chiellini killed off the tie with a third goal after half-time. 8. AS Roma 3-0 Barcelona (2017/18)Ah, now, this is the first of the comeback humiliations with Barca entering the second leg of their quarter-final confident that they'd already progressed by having won the first match 4-1. But the 'Greek God in Rome' that was Kostas Manolas sent Barca unexpectedly crashing out of the competition as he secured a 3-0 win for the Italians after Edin Dzeko and Daniele De Rossi's strikes. 9. Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona (2018/19)After bottling a three-goal-first-leg lead the previous season against Roma, surely Barca wouldn't let the exact same thing happen at Anfield having won 3-0 on home soil? Yeh... about that. The Blaugrana were once again left to lick their wounds after doubles from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum seriously cast their mental strength into doubt. 10. Barcelona 2-8 Bayern Munich (2019/20)And here we are, the humiliation to end all humiliations and if there's any positive for Barca to take from this, any at all, it's the fact that things can't possibly get any worse. That being said, it won't stop every Barca fan under the sun being tagged in 'you 8-2 to see it' memes for approximately the next 20 years. GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong saysOk, ok, let me sweep in for a second and add some positives, because I feel as though Barcelona fans will be lacking much in the way of optimism right now. It goes without saying that Barca did indeed win the Champions League on three occasions during the epoch in question and it's only very recently that the upsets have become systemic. And that's where the negatives creep back in again - I'm sorry, I'm sorry - because going three seasons on the bounce suffering some sort of humiliation simply cannot be ignored. To bottle comfortable aggregate leads against Roma and Liverpool is one thing, but to be on the receiving end of a thrashing of historic proportions is a completely different beast. Forget going back to the drawing board, Barca need to go back to when the drawing board was still a tree somewhere. It's a sad state seeing Barca this way and I take absolutely zero pleasure in it, trust me, but that's exactly why people like myself are so impassioned to see change at Camp Nou before it's too late. Barca pride themselves on being more than a club and at the very least, they need to be more than a club that gets slapped about 8-2. Halle Berry Just Posted A No-Pants Skateboarding Photo To Celebrate Her B-Day - Yahoo Lifestyle Posted: 15 Aug 2020 12:08 AM PDT
There are so many times Halle Berry has proven that she's not like the rest of us, like when she shared a badass pic on Instagram of herself doing a handstand or how she managed to turn a pillow into a fashion statement. But Halle just outdid herself with a new Insta post to celebrate her 54th birthday. In it, Halle is riding on a skateboard in a white tee and bathing suit bottoms. She's barefoot, her hair is perfectly tousled, and her legs and butt look super toned. "54....life just gets better and better! 🌈✨," she wrote in the caption. Famous friends flooded her comments with birthday wishes. "You better skate on into your destiny!" wrote Octavia Spencer. "Happy happy birthday. ❤️," said Julianne Moore. "Yasssssss! 👑 ❤️" chimed in celebrity trainer Jeanette Jenkins. And, of course, plenty of people noticed that Halle looks like that at 54. "Fountain of youth," one wrote. " #54 looks good on you 🔥🔥🔥🔥," another said. Halle has made it pretty clear that she works hard to look so fit. In an essay she wrote for Women's Health in May, Halle said that she likes to focus on all-over fitness, and that her average workout "doesn't involve a single situp or crunch." Instead, the workouts she does with her trainer Peter Lee Thomas are "all about full-body movements—like squats—so I'm hitting all of my muscles at once, abs included." As a result, she said, "my core is just as toned and strong as ever." Of course, Halle works more than her core. Thomas told People he likes to have Halle do a combo of exercise techniques that include martial arts, boxing, and yoga. And, he said, Halle goes hard at the gym. "I had no idea what her age was when I met her," he said. "I never looked or was interested in that, and when I found out, I was absolutely shell-shocked because she has the discipline and athleticism of a 25-year old." Halle has also stuck to a high fat, moderate protein, very low-carb ketogenic diet for years, to help her manage her diabetes, she told LIVE with Kelly and Ryan. Add all of those factors up, and Halle is redefining what it means to be in your mid-fifties. HBD, Halle!!! Posted: 14 Aug 2020 11:47 PM PDT On Thursday, Vice President of Delhi Congress Abhishek Dutt had posted a video on his Twitter in which a bus could be seen navigating through a flooded street as the water enters it. In his video, Dutt claimed that it is a condition of Delhi during monsoon, slyly taking a dig at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. However, we have now found out that the video is from Jaipur, Rajasthan, and not Delhi as claimed. Watch the video here. When DNA looked through the video it showed a board which read, "नसियां भट्टारकजी" which is a temple in Jaipur's Narayan Singh Circle. We also found a news report from Patrika, dated August 11, 2020, which had the same video and confirmed that it's from Jaipur. In addition to this, we also found another news report which mentioned that this video was from the same area (Jaipur). However, it is also true that there has been severe waterlogging in some parts of Delhi, however, the video in question here is not from Delhi. ANI had tweeted about water-logging issues in Delhi aggravated by the rains. They tweeted, "#WATCH Delhi: People crossing a severely waterlogged road on a bullock cart in the Tughlakabad area, fall into the water." The viral video was also posted by Delhi Youth Congress' official Twitter handle, the caption of which read, "Your so-called development starts drowning the moment it rains. This video goes on to show that apart from looting and corruption, nothing has been done in Delhi for the past 6 years." Alphonso Davies just wowed the world on this goal (VIDEO) | Offside - Daily Hive Posted: 14 Aug 2020 10:42 PM PDT Alphonso Davies has arrived on the global stage. The 19-year-old Canadian soccer star just wowed fans from around the world setting up a world-class goal in the Champions League quarter-final. The former Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder who now stars as a left back for Bayern Munich in Germany, Davies' assist on Bayern's fifth goal was truly amazing.
Davies danced past two FC Barcelona players before blowing by a defender and setting up a teammate for Bayern's fifth goal of the match. I repeat, he did this against FC Barcelona, one of the best teams on the planet. Bayern won the match 8-2 and will play in the Champions League semi-final on August 19. It's been a superb season for Davies, who has taken his game to another level. A key player on Bayern's Bundesliga championship squad, Davies is now widely considered one of the best left backs in the entire world. Not only did Davies star on the world stage, he did so playing against one of his idols, Lionel Messi. This is a dream come true for Davies, who said in 2018 he was most looking forward to playing in Champions League matches prior to making the move to Europe. "At a very young age, every time you hear that [Champions League] song come on, you know something special is about to happen," Davies told Daily Hive two years ago. "Whoever made the Champions League is a brilliant guy… Having the top teams from Spain, England, Germany – all over Europe – to play against each other, it's exciting to watch." He just made it more exciting.

Posted: 14 Aug 2020 10:08 PM PDT Professionalism runs in BTS' blood. Need evidence? Take a look at the below BTS wardrobe malfunctions that show that the Bangtan Boys are professionals through and through. From broken buttons to ripped shirts, there are so many wardrobe malfunctions that ARMYs have missed over the years thanks to Jungkook, RM, Suga, Jin, V, Jimin and J-Hope's commitment to their performances. And while we love that boys never break a sweat (shout out to the executives at Big Hit Entertainment), these wardrobe malfunctions prove that the members of BTS, like anyone else, are humans, and they, too, have times moments where their clothes just don't do what they're supposed to. (Not that we're complaining. CC: Jungkook's abs.) For those who don't know, BTS debuted in 2013 with their first single, "No More Dream." Since then, the seven-member boy band has become an international phenomenon, with tens of millions of social media followers and celebrity fans including Katy Perry, John Cena and Chrissy Teigen. With so many eyes on them, we're sure that there's pressure for the boys to be perfect on stage. But regardless of if they mess up every now and then, we still love them—wardrobe malfunctions and all. Ahead are our favorite times BTS recovered from their wardrobe malfunctions and proved that the show must go on, ripped shirt or not. When RM & Jimin Ripped Their Tank TopsDuring a concept trailer performance in 2013, RM and Jimin accidentally ripped their white tank tops. The wardrobe malfunction (which can be viewed at the 1:05 mark in the video above) happens when the beat slows down and the members of BTS get into formation to tear off their uniforms and reveal their white tank tops underneath. However, as RM and Jimin tore off their uniforms, they accidentally ripped their white tank tops as well. The next seconds show RM with his tank top around his waist and top half of his body exposed. Jimin, on the other hand, only ripped off one shoulder of his tank top, while the other sleeve hung to the other side of his body. What did BTS do next? Well, the boys continued the performance like the professionals they are, unphased by their wardrobe malfunctions. (Shout out to RM for still trying to hold his tank top up though.) When RM Unbuttoned Jungkook's ShirtJungkook is known to flash his abs in "Fake Love," but during a performance of the song in 2018, he showed more skin than RM accidentally rips his shirt during Suga's verse. The moment, which can be viewed at the 2:19 mark in the video above, shows RM grabbing at Jungkook's button-up shirt during a dance move and accidentally ripping off a button, which exposed the singer's torso and caused the crowd to scream. The next few seconds show Jungkook buttoning back up his shirt as he continues the performance like the professional he is. In a reaction video after the performance, Jungkook and RM laugh about the wardrobe malfunction. "It all happened so fast," Jungkook says. When Almost All of Jungkook's Buttons Came OffDuring a 2016 performance of "Blood Sweat & Tears," almost all of Jungkook's buttons came off as he performed the track's fast choreography. For the performance, Jungkook wore a loose and airy button-up shirt, which seemed fine until the end of the performance, where Jungkook posed with his band mates and showed that he only had one button left on his shirt. (Watch at the 3:20 mark.) Jungkook laughed off the wardrobe malfunction in another video, where he realized that there was also a hole in the side of shirt. As he showed V, the member cracked up at JK wardrobe malfunction. When Jungkook Gave J-Hope Back His ShoeAs ARMYs know, J-Hope has lost his shoe more than once. But one of our favorite moments was during a 2016 performance of "For You," where J-Hope accidentally kicked off one of his shoes and had to perform some of the choreography with one shoe on. A cute moment occurred a few seconds later (at 0:08 mark in the video above) when Jungkook went Jungkook went over to grab J-Hope's shoe and bring it back to him. J-Hope slipped back on the shoe and continued the performance like a professional. The shoe mishap didn't seem to bother J-Hope much, as he and his BTS bandmates seemed to be smiling and holding in their laughter at the snafu. When J-Hope Stumbled & Lost His ShoeAnother J-Hope shoe moment came in 2014 during a performance of "Boy in Luv" when J-Hoped jumped as part of the choreography, stumbled and then lost his shoe. The moment, which can be viewed at the 0:40 mark in the video above, comes after J-Hope jumps up and bumps into RM's back, which caused him to stumble and his shoe to come off. Like the professional he is, though, the wardrobe malfunction didn't phase him at all. J-Hope regains his balance and continues the performance with a killer rap. When V's Button Popped OffV had a subtle wardrobe malfunction in 2020 during a performance of "ON." During Suga's verse, V and BTS' other members banged on some drums as part of the choreography. However, V may have hit his moves too hard as one of his buttons popped off and exposed part of his chest. (The moment can be viewed at the 2:10 mark in the video above.) "DID U SEE HOW HIS BUTTON POPPED OPEN AND HIS CHEST WAS SHOWING WHEN HE HIT THE DRUM!!! KIM TAEHYUNG!!!!!" Twitter user @taehyungtannah tweeted with a clip of the moment. Bayern Munich humble Barcelona FC 8-2 to reach Champions League semis - The Indian Express Posted: 14 Aug 2020 09:08 PM PDT By: AP | Updated: August 15, 2020 8:27:44 am LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Bayern Munich inflicted on Barcelona the most humiliating defeat of the Lionel Messi era and among the worst in team history by 8-2 to reach the Champions League semifinals on Friday. Bayern's stunning start to the standout quarterfinal between the only past champions in the last eight saw Thomas Müller score twice and Ivan Perišić and Serge Gnabry add on in the first half hour. Barcelona conceded eight for the first time since 1946 after Joshua Kimmich, Robert Lewandowski and Philippe Coutinho (twice) piled on in the second half. Barcelona tallied only seven shots on target in the whole game, getting on the board with an own-goal by David Alaba in the first half and through Luis Suárez in the second. "It's a disastrous result. An embarrassment," Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué said. "This, today, is unacceptable." Seeking its first title since 2013, Bayern will next face either Manchester City or Lyon, who meet on Saturday in the last quarterfinal. Paris Saint-Germain and Leipzig are in the other semifinal of the mini-tournament being staged without fans in Lisbon amid the coronavirus pandemic. "Brutal," Kimmich said. "It's hard to comprehend beating Barcelona 8-2. We were so focused from the first minute, we wanted to get forward with intent. An incredible result in the end, but we're not done yet." Bayern's biggest victory in Champions League history kept alive its quest for a sixth title, which would move it ahead of Barcelona. The German club has the most wins against Barcelona in the tournament's history. "We knew that if we put them under pressure, we would get chances," Bayern coach Hansi Flick said. "We have such quality and intensity in this team, now we need to recharge and focus on the next game, where we start again from zero." The humbling loss ended a forgettable season for Barcelona, one that included a coaching change and public disputes between players and team officials. It is the first time since 2008 the club has finished a season without a significant title. It hasn't lifted the European trophy since 2015. This loss recalled previous Barcelona defeats almost forgotten: — Eight conceded for the first time since 1946 in losing to Sevilla 8-0 in the final of the equivalent to the Copa del Rey. — Largest margin of defeat since 1951 in losing to Espanyol 6-0 in the Spanish league. — Only second time it conceded five goals in a European match, after the 5-4 second-leg loss at Levski Sofia in the 1975-76 UEFA Cup quarterfinals. Quique Setién's remaining time as coach is expected to be counted in hours. He was already under fire after Barcelona relinquished the Spanish league lead — and title — to Real Madrid after the competition resumed following the pandemic break. "Right now it's too soon to be talking about whether I stay at the club or not," Setién said. "The reality is that it doesn't depend on me. It's worth all of us working out what's important and considering a wide range of things which correspond to a defeat of this importance and which is so painful." In a hectic start at Benfica's Stadium of Light, Barcelona paid for defensive mistakes against Bayern's potent attack, which reached 39 goals in nine games in this Champions League.
Just four minutes in, Müller scored from inside the area after a breakaway that started when Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets gave the ball away at midfield. Barcelona equalized three minutes later when Alaba found his own net while trying to intercept a pass by Jordi Alba to Suárez. Barcelona had a couple of great chances shortly after, with Suárez's close-range strike being saved by Manuel Neuer and Messi's curling cross shot hitting the far post. Messi also missed after a run into the area, and Bayern went back in front with Perišić's powerful shot past goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen in the 22nd. Bayern added the third and fourth goals three minutes apart after Gnabry beat Gerard Piqué to a pass into the area in the 28th, and Müller completed a cross into the area in the 31st after Barcelona right back Nelson Semedo conceded possession. Suárez pulled Barcelona closer in the 57th, but Kimmich added the fifth goal in the 63rd after Alphonso Davies cruised past the Barcelona defense. Lewandowski scored with a header in the 82nd, and Coutinho — on loan from Barcelona — closed the scoring with goals in the 85th and 89th minutes and didn't celebrate. Bayern's eight goals tied the record for most by a club in a match in the Champions League era. Borussia Dortmund beat Legia Warsaw 8-4 in the 2016-17 group stage. It is the most by a club in a Champions League era knockout stage. With his double, Müller reached six goals in five matches against Barcelona on the occasion of becoming the German player with the most appearances in the Champions League at 113. Barcelona's demise means no Spanish club has reached the semifinals for the first time since 2007. 📣 The Indian Express is now on Telegram. Kamala Harris and Disinformation: Debunking 3 Viral Falsehoods - The New York Times Posted: 14 Aug 2020 08:47 PM PDT As Joseph R. Biden Jr. announced that he had selected Senator Kamala Harris of California as his vice-presidential running mate, internet trolls got to work. Since then, false and misleading information about Ms. Harris has spiked online and on TV. The activity has jumped from two dozen mentions per hour during a recent week to over 3,200 per hour in the last few days, according to the media insights company Zignal Labs, which analyzed global television broadcasts and social media. Much of that rise is fueled by fervent supporters of President Trump and adherents of the extremist conspiracy movement QAnon, as well as by the far left, according to a New York Times analysis of the most widespread falsehoods about Ms. Harris. On Thursday, Mr. Trump himself encouraged one of the most persistent falsehoods, a racist conspiracy theory that Ms. Harris is not eligible for the vice presidency or presidency because her parents were immigrants. "Sadly, this wave of misinformation was predictable and inevitable," said Melissa Ryan, chief executive of Card Strategies, a consulting firm that researches disinformation. Many of the narratives are inaccurate accusations that first surged last year during Ms. Harris's campaign to become the Democratic presidential nominee. Here are three false rumors about Ms. Harris that continue circulating widely online. The 'PizzaGate' Conspiracy TheoryOn Wednesday, a day after Mr. Biden announced his selection, the falsehood that Ms. Harris is connected to a child-trafficking conspiracy known as PizzaGate was published on the conspiracy-mongering website Infowars, which set off a round of sharing on social media. PizzaGate hinges on the baseless notion that Hillary Clinton and Democratic elites ran a child sex-trafficking ring through a Washington pizza restaurant. According to the rumors about Ms. Harris, she is tied to the conspiracy because her sister was invited by John Podesta, Ms. Clinton's presidential campaign manager, to a "Hillary pizza party" in 2016. By Friday morning, more than 4,200 tweets discussed the unfounded theory about Ms. Harris's connection to PizzaGate, according to Dataminr, a social media monitoring service. On Facebook, users in dozens of QAnon groups and pages posted about the rumor. The falsehood reached up to 624,000 people, according to The Times's analysis. On Instagram, which Facebook owns, 77 more posts tried to spread the lie further. And on YouTube, a QAnon channel with over 100,000 followers pushed the conspiracy, too. "Remember, we know what pizza was code language for," Daniel Lee, a YouTube personality popular in conspiracy circles, told his audience. The video was viewed 30,000 times. A Facebook spokeswoman, Liz Bourgeois, said in an email on Friday that "it's up to our fact-checking partners to determine which claims they rate, and they take a number of factors into consideration." She acknowledged that as of Friday afternoon, there were no fact-checks so far on the widely shared posts falsely tying Ms. Harris to PizzaGate. Twitter said on Friday that it permanently suspended people associated with QAnon who used many different accounts or tried to evade a previous suspension. "We deploy a number of tools to add context to and address misinformation," including applying labels, not recommending tweets and limiting the reach of tweets, a Twitter spokesman, Trenton Kennedy, said. YouTube said Friday that it was reducing the spread of borderline content on the video site, including QAnon content, but that the video flagged by The Times did not violate its guidelines. Harris's HeritageFalsehoods about Ms. Harris's heritage — in particular that she is "not Black" — were among the most widely spread misinformation that Zignal Labs tracked. Since Tuesday, the argument had been mentioned over 40,000 times, the company found. "Kamala Harris is not an American Black," said one tweet that collected 2,300 likes and shares after it was first posted on Wednesday. "She is half Indian and half Jamaican. She is robbing American Blacks of their history. Kamala is as Black American as Obama." In a Facebook post on Tuesday night, Candace Owens, a right-wing commentator, posted a widely shared post questioning Ms. Harris's heritage. "I am SO EXCITED that we get to watch Kamala Harris, who swore into congress as an 'Indian-American,' now play the 'I'm a black a woman' card all the way until November," she wrote. Facebook soon added a fact check to Ms. Owens's post, requiring users to click past a label noting that third-party fact checkers found "this information has no basis in fact." Ms. Harris, the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, was born in 1964 in Oakland, Calif., a few years after her parents arrived in the United States. According to The Associated Press, Ms. Harris has long identified as Black; she was not sworn into Congress identifying only as Indian-American. In interviews, Ms. Harris has regularly spoken about how her mother, who was from India, raised her as Black. Ms. Owens said in an email on Friday: "It is absurd to censor a truth followed by a future guess. This is why I am already in legal proceedings with Facebook fact-checkers. They have now begun censoring statements that were never said." Other memes on Facebook labeling Ms. Harris as "Kamala Dolezal" were liked and shared thousands of times, according to the Times analysis. The posts referred to Rachel Dolezal, a former official at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People who was later revealed to be white and was charged in 2018 with welfare fraud. Whitney Phillips, an assistant professor at Syracuse University who teaches digital ethics, said she was "absolutely not surprised" by the viral misinformation questioning Ms. Harris's heritage. "Regardless of political party, sexism and racism have long been fixtures in American public life," Ms. Phillips said. Jussie SmollettOne of the most convoluted lies that has spread on social media involves the actor Jussie Smollett and the baseless allegation that Ms. Harris is his aunt and knew in advance that Mr. Smollett was planning to stage an assault against himself early last year. According to the unsubstantiated narrative, when the Chicago Police Department and the F.B.I. investigated the alleged assault, Ms. Harris appeared in Mr. Smollett's phone records, so she must have been in on the hoax. The right-wing website True Pundit published an article pushing this argument in November. The article gained new prominence on social media this week, shared nearly 2,000 times on Twitter and reaching 180,000 people, according to CrowdTangle, a tool to analyze interactions across social networks. A February 2019 article on FactCheck.org concluded that there was no relation between Ms. Harris and Mr. Smollett, and that evidence of her role in the hoax was nonexistent. Ms. Harris did initially condemn the news of the apparent attack on Mr. Smollett, but when the police said the assault had been staged, she put out a new statement saying she was "sad, frustrated and disappointed" by the development. No charges for Rankin in viral voice note controversy - Cayman Compass Posted: 14 Aug 2020 08:47 PM PDT A police investigation into a so-called 'viral voice note' by businessman Mario Rankin, including false allegations about the governor, has been dropped. The voice note briefly flared into a minor controversy during the early days of the coronavirus crisis and Rankin was arrested on suspicion of spreading false rumours that could cause public alarm. He was informed Friday that no formal charges would be brought. Rankin acknowledged at the time that he had recorded the note, which suggested Governor Martyn Roper had organised the first British Airways air bridge flight from London to Cayman in April in order to get his wife Elisabeth back to the island. In fact, Mrs. Roper was not on the flight and only recently returned to Cayman from the UK. The air bridge was the first of several flights bringing medical supplies and returning nationals from the UK to Cayman and facilitating evacuations for island residents who had lost work. The governor initially described the note as a "fake news attack", and Premier Alden McLaughlin publicly apologised to him on behalf of Cayman, describing the note as "vile" during a televised press conference. Police Commissioner Derek Byrne announced a police investigation at the time, saying officers had a "suspect in mind". Neither man named Rankin personally at that point, though he was widely known to have sent the message. At the time, Byrne said the investigation was over a potential breach of section 64 of the Penal Code which prohibits anyone from publishing a 'false statement, rumour or report' with the potential to cause 'fear, alarm or distress' to the public. Rankin acknowledged in a radio appearance that he had sent the note. He said he had distributed it to a few friends in a WhatsApp chat group and had not intended for it to be shared any more widely. He was arrested in April in relation to the alleged offence. After being bailed three times, he was informed Friday that a decision had been taken not to pursue charges. "I am glad the DPP (Department of Public Prosecutions) decided not to proceed with any action because it would have been setting a bad precedent that people can't share their personal opinion on a private chat group," he said. Rankin said it was regrettable that the premier and others had spoken publicly about the alleged offence before any charges were brought. He said he hoped everyone who had been "quick to judge" would now see that no crime was committed. Police confirmed the investigation was no longer being pursued. The DPP said it does not comment on individual cases. She brushes Jay Chou's hair and fixes Taylor Swift's makeup every day - AsiaOne Posted: 14 Aug 2020 08:14 PM PDT She brushes Jay Chou's hair and fixes Taylor Swift's makeup every day - AsiaOne Why I Do What I Do is an original AsiaOne series where we showcase people with uncommon professions and what it takes to get there. Meeting our favourite celebrity might be a one in a million chance for most of us, but for Ayu Paramitha, she gets to brush their hair and fix their makeup every day – well their wax figures at least. The 23-year-old Indonesian has been working at Madame Tussauds Singapore as a wax maintenance artist for one and a half years. So what exactly does a wax maintenance artist do? Contrary to what people might think, the job involves painting the skin tone or makeup on the wax figure, as well as fixing the hair and clothes. And this is no easy feat, as everything has to be done as accurately as possible. On top of actually painting on wax itself, making the wax figures look as close as possible to their real-life counterpart is a challenge that Ayu faces. According to her, even fixing Jay Chou's hairstyle took her around three to four hours to complete. Thankfully though, there is a cheat sheet of sorts – a maintenance file that contains all the information Ayu needs to work on a celebrity. There are perks to the job too, such as "meeting" her idol (not Jay) on a daily basis. "When I see him, he looks a 100 per cent life-like. It's like I'm literally seeing him in person. He's one of my favourite [celebrities] and I will definitely maintain him well," gushes Ayu. Watch the video to find out who her favourite star is, what Ayu does and how you can even be a wax maintenance artist just like her. editor@asiaone.com 2020-08-14 10:51:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiZWh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmFzaWFvbmUuY29tL2xpZmVzdHlsZS9zaGUtYnJ1c2hlcy1qYXktY2hvdXMtaGFpci1hbmQtZml4ZXMtdGF5bG9yLXN3aWZ0cy1tYWtldXAtZXZlcnktZGF50gEA?oc=5 |
Posted: 14 Aug 2020 08:08 PM PDT In the era of internet news, it's no surprise that a trending topic on Twitter is that of the "haunted" Annabelle doll, in which two horror films are based. The real doll that inspired the movies is located in the Warren Occult Museum. However, on Aug. 14, rumors spread that the doll escaped from the museum on her own volition. And yes — this is real life. The true story of the haunted Annabelle dollRELATED: The Real-Life Story Behind 'The Conjuring 3' Might Be The Strangest Yet Upon the first mention of the name Annabelle, horror fans might immediately associate it to the trilogy, Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, and Annabelle Comes Home. The movies were based on a real doll, owned by paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren. "Looks are deceiving. It's not what the doll looks like that makes it scary; it is what has been infused within the doll: evil," Lorraine told USA Today in 2017. Hobby shop creation, Annabelle, came to be in 1970 when gifted to a daughter from a mother as a birthday present. Soon after, they claimed the doll attacked people and "attempted strangulation of a family friend." The mother called on Ed and Lorraine. The two took Annabelle, deeming her "inhuman" and placed her in their occult museum. 'The Conjuring' first introduced Annabelle but not everything is based on real eventsRELATED: What We Know About the Future of the 'Conjuring' Series After 'The Nun' Annabelle is a star in her own right but she was first introduced in Hollywood through The Conjuring which tells the real-life backstory of the Warrens. But, in true entertainment fashion, the film depicts a far more sinister plot for entertainment purposes. The real doll, a Raggedy Ann Doll, had a different experience than what the movies portray. She'd never been thrown in the trash, and "paranormal activity associated with the doll had never gotten bad enough that they wanted to throw the doll away prior to passing it along to researchers Ed and Lorraine," according to History vs Hollywood. The Warrens stated that the doll did, in fact, move positions and even rooms. And those messages written by the doll in the movie? The Warrens say that is true. Same with blood found on Annabelle in the movie — which Ed and Lorraine also stated as fact. They then contacted a medium to hold a séance. Aside from noises overheard in empty rooms, the doll may have been responsible for "at least one death," Ed explained in a video tour of the museum. He told the story of a man who crashed his motorcycle after mocking Annabelle during a visit. "Many of the objects in this room here have had dire effects on people. People have been maimed, have been killed. People have wound up in mental institutions because of many of the things that are right in this building here," he said. "You have the voodoo dolls, you have the Raggedy Ann Doll, which was responsible for the death of a young man who came in here one time, who challenged the doll to do its worst and it did." Did Annabelle escape the museum?RELATED: Tom Cruise's Rule About Being Filmed Running Without Co-Stars Was Broken by This Actor With Twitter users running amuck at the mere thought of an evil doll lurking around — as if 2020 needs any more stress — everyone can rest assured that Annabelle did not escape the occult museum. The rumors began after an interview didn't translate correctly from Chinese to English and a user posted to YouTube. Peaky Blinders star Annabelle Wallis spoke about convincing Tom Cruise to run with her on The Mummy. "I got to run on-screen with him, but he told me no at first," Wallis told The Hollywood Reporter about Cruise. "He said, 'Nobody runs on-screen with me,' and I said, 'But I'm a really good runner.' So, I would time my treadmill so that he'd walk in and see me run. And then he added all these running scenes." Ironically, Wallis played Mia in the first Annabelle. The real Annabelle can be viewed in Warren's Occult Museum in Connecticut despite the passing of both Ed and Lorraine. "We have a priest come in and bless the museum, including Annabelle," Lorraine Warren said in the same USA Today interview. "These are prayers that bind the evil — much like an electric fence for a dog." T-Mobile announces availability of 5G wireless service in Longmont - Longmont Times-Call Posted: 14 Aug 2020 07:44 PM PDT T-Mobile U.S. Inc. announced Friday that its 5G high-speed wireless network is "live in Longmont." T-Mobile, whose headquarters are in Belllevue, Wash., said in a news release that its next-generation 5G service will mean "faster data speeds and better connectivity" for "technology enthusiasts, business owners, farmers, first responders, innovators, early adopters" in "lighting up Longmont and the surrounding area with next-generation wireless service." Residents and businesses can use the network with a 5G-capable device. Joel Rushing, T-Mobile senior communications manager, said in a Friday email accompanying the news release that the Longmont area launch is part of the company's nationwide 5G network, which he said "now covers nearly more than 250 million people, across 1.3 million square miles and 7,500+ cities and towns." Rushing said in a another email that "Boulder doesn't yet have our 5G signal, yet!, but we're continuing to build out our 5G network every day." He said a national list of specific cities where T-Mobile has deployed 5G thus far is available at tinyurl.com/y4mnhe6q. The list includes Lafayette, Louisville, Erie, Superior, Dacono, Frederick and Broomfield as well as Longmont. T-Mobile said in its news release that "two momentous breakthroughs" enabled the national network expansion. One was T-Mobile's completion in April of a merger with Sprint, another national wireless provider. The second, T-Mobile said, was the company's recent completion of a launch of a "a commercial nationwide standalone architecture 5G network," which it said is "a critical building block for the continued development of 5G and helps expand T-Mobile's footprint … to almost 2,000 additional cities and towns, including Longmont." T-Mobile said it is also "aggressively rolling out what's referred to as mid-band spectrum, acquired as part of the Sprint merger." It said that "allows lots of data to travel at faster speeds over relatively far distances." More information about T-Mobile's 5G service is available t-mobile.com/coverage. Bayern Munich batters Barcelona 8-2 to reach Champions League semi-finals - FRANCE 24 English Posted: 14 Aug 2020 07:08 PM PDT Issued on: With four goals in the first half hour and four more in the last half hour, Bayern Munich humiliated Barcelona 8-2 on Friday to reach the Champions League semifinals for the second time in three years. Advertising Thomas Müller scored twice and Ivan Perišić and Serge Gnabry added on in Bayern's stunning start to the standout quarterfinal between the only past champions left in the last eight. Joshua Kimmich, Robert Lewandowski and Philippe Coutinho (twice) piled on Barcelona's misery in the second half. Barcelona got on the board with an own-goal by David Alaba in the first half and a goal by Luis Suárez in the second, but Lionel Messi's team was never in contention. Seeking its first title since 2013, Bayern will next face either Manchester City or Lyon, who meet on Saturday in the last quarterfinal. Paris Saint-Germain and Leipzig will play in the other semifinal of the mini-tournament being staged without fans in Lisbon amid the coronavirus pandemic. The humiliating loss ended a disappointing season for Barcelona, one that included a coaching change and public disputes between players and team officials. It is the first time since 2008 that the Spanish club finished a season without a significant title. It hasn't lifted the European trophy since 2015. Indonesia takes part in late-stage China vaccine trial - mySanAntonio.com Posted: 14 Aug 2020 07:08 PM PDT JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — More people in Indonesia rolled up their sleeves Friday to test a potential coronavirus vaccine developed by a Chinese company. The Indonesian government announced the partnership between state-owned enterprise Bio Farma and the Chinese company Sinovac BioTech in early July. As part of the deal, Indonesia recruited 1,620 volunteers for the trial. The first 20 were injected with the candidate vaccine in Bandung, West Java province, on Tuesday, and more followed suit. "We hope that this third clinical trial will be completed in six months. We hope that in January we can produce it and at the same time, if the production is ready, vaccinate all people in the country," President Joko Widodo said on Tuesday. After passing a medical and PCR test to confirm their health, volunteers were given a first dose of the experimental vaccine or a placebo, then a second dose 14 days later. "I am not worried about the vaccine trial as I have searched the information related to a Sinovac vaccine before," said Rina Mardiana, 44. "I want to join the trial for humanitarian reasons. I hope the pandemic will end soon." Clinical trial research leader Kusnandi Rusmil told The Associated Press that half the volunteers will be injected by the vaccine and the other half with the placebo. "We will see the comparison ... in seven months," Rusmil said. Bio Farma currently has a production capability of 100 million vaccine doses. The company is building a new facility, expected to be completed in December, that will increase the capacity to 250 million doses. Use of the vaccine will be prioritized for Indonesia, the world's fourth most populated country, Bio Farma CEO Honesti Basyir said. Called CoronaVac, the potential vaccine uses an inactivated pathogen, meaning the virus is grown in a lab and then deactivated or killed. In June the company announced that no severe adverse side effects had resulted from the phase 1 and 2 trials conducted in volunteers in China. The company is also planning clinical trials with thousands of volunteers in India, Brazil and Bangladesh. Under normal circumstances, it takes years for a vaccine to be developed. But with many experts believing that a vaccine is the best hope against the virus, clinical trials and development have been rapidly accelerated since Jan. 10, when China shared the virus' genetic sequence. The trial comes at a time when Indonesia continues to have one of the highest confirmed caseloads in the region, with the actual number of cases suspected to be much higher. As of Thursday, Indonesia had 132,816 confirmed cases with 5,968 deaths. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Department of Science Education. Motorcycling: Binder wants to start afresh at Red Bull Ring - SaltWire Network Posted: 14 Aug 2020 06:08 PM PDT SALZBURG, Austria (Reuters) - Red Bull KTM rookie Brad Binder is not getting carried away with last week's sensational maiden MotoGP victory in the Czech Republic and is looking to reset for Sunday's race in Austria. South African Binder, 25, rose from seventh position at the start for a comfortable victory in just his third MotoGP race after moving up a class from Moto2 for 2020. "I have been trying to reset," he told reporters on Friday. "It's difficult to try and forget about it because it has just happened, but I need to keep my feet on the ground. "I just want to restart like nothing has happened. I want to start fresh, take things one lap at a time and keep the work ethic from last weekend." Binder won his previous race at the Red Bull Ring in the Moto2 class in 2019, and will hope to draw on that experience and his excellent knowledge of his team's home circuit. "It's a track that I have loved since I first rode here. If you look at it on a piece of paper, it looks super simple, but to try and ride fast and consistent around here is another challenge," he said. "I need to take a step back and not rush things. I find the best way to approach things on the MotoGP bike is with a bit of caution in the beginning and build into it, because it is so easy to make big mistakes early on." Binder's early success in MotoGP has left him feeling less pressure now he will be considered a contender in each race. "I almost feel less pressure now. You put so much pressure on yourself and (there is) uncertainty if you are ever going to get it right, this big goal that you are working towards. "I have always truly believed I would get it right, but I had no idea it would come after three races."
