Ana de Armas' viral fan account returns to Twitter and releases statement...days after deactivating - Daily Mail

Ana de Armas' viral fan account returns to Twitter and releases statement explaining absence... days after mysterious deactivation

The viral fan Twitter account for actress Ana de Armas has been reactivated, after having disappeared from the social media platform earlier this week.

And in a statement tweeted out on Wednesday, the account's owner explained the reasons behind their impromptu deactivation and how they plan to move forward with their content.

'This account has always been one of absolute support for Ana de Armas. This account would not exist in the first place if I was not a fan of hers. Let me emphasize that: I am a fan of Ana de Armas,' began the owner, whose account goes by @ArmasUpdates.

The statement then went on to address the viral fame that the account originally achieved by tweeting out and commentating on paparazzi photos of the 32-year-old Knives Out star, who is often pictured with her boyfriend Ben Affleck, 48.

The account made news back in April when the actress went as far as to block it on Twitter.

The statement continued: 'The past few months have been a whirlwind ever since I applied a tone of constructive criticism to posts of candid photographs. This tone was so that I can take control of a narrative, even though it is not mine to begin with, and make people know that, as an Ana de Armas fan, I am aware that she should not have allowed herself to to be portrayed by the paparazzi in an unfavorable light during our current moment in time.'

The account owner was referencing the current coronavirus pandemic and de Armas' frequent - and sometimes mask-free - public outings.

For her: 'This account has always been one of absolute support for Ana de Armas. This account would not exist in the first place if I was not a fan of hers. Let me emphasize that: I am a fan of Ana de Armas,' began the owner, whose account goes by @ArmasUpdates; Ana pictured in 2019

'Furthermore, this tone was also used to highlight the inaction with her platform for social causes that need attention. There has never been malicious or harmful intent with my account; I was just trying to get my frustration out there that my idol could improve and be a better public figure.'

@ArmasUpdates then revealed that they deactivated the Twitter page 'voluntarily' in order to 'take a short break' for their mental health.

'For the sake of my mental health, I voluntarily deactivated this account to take a short break. It got to the point where there was hate coming from all sides,' they explained.

'For the first time, I felt that my account was a bubble for hate — even directed towards me, personally, as the owner of the account. Nonetheless, I want to take responsibility for the indirect nature of my posts allowing a breeding ground of bullying, misogyny, and hate speech in relation to Ana in the comments sections for her public behavior, especially involving the relationship she is in currently.'

They claimed to 'condemn' all of the malicious dialogue occurring the threads of their tweets and that they only aim to attract genuine fans of the star to the account.

'Moving forward, I will be careful with what I post on the account, since I understand that not everyone shares my sense of humor and this account is clearly tied to how Ana de Armas is perceived by others.

'The mission of this fan account is not to tear her down, but to celebrate & respect Golden Globe nominee and movie star Ana de Arms. From now on, I will make sure to uphold that,' the statement concluded.

The account regularly posted photos, presumably without permission, and included sarcastic captions about Ana's day-to-day life, including her walks with her dogs.

She doesn't seem to have appreciated the humor when she blocked it months ago, though the accounts creator told Paper in April that he was a fan of the actress.

'I never meant for my tweets to be mean-spirited or insulting,' said AJ, who was described as a 23-year-old Texan.

'It was quite the opposite. I started to notice the tweets I made were making the rounds on Twitter and going viral in different places, which leads me to believe that someone that knows her notified her or her management team about the posts. I understand if she or they took it the wrong way, but it was always with good intentions,' he explained.

The admin, who called himself a 'dedicated cinephile,' originally wanted to spice up photos of Ana's daily routines with his humorous captions.

Different interpretations: 'I never meant for my tweets to be mean-spirited or insulting... I understand if she or they took it the wrong way, but it was always with good intentions,' said AJ,  a 23-year-old Texan; shown in June

'There's only so much you can say about her leaving the house everyday without it getting boring,' he contended.

'I had to spice it up for the sake of my account. I wanted to have fun and was playfully teasing the aspect of their showy dog walks. I love how she doesn't care that paps are outside her house and she's going to serve a look no matter what, even if that means just going to pick up her dog's poop,' he continued.

'I provided some lighthearted sarcasm in my posts towards her and Ben due to the fact that they were always outside and not following safety precautions in this pandemic that we are currently experiencing.'

AJ was presumably referring to Ana and Ben's lack of mask use on most of their walks, but LA County's mask orders allow residents to go for solitary walks or other recreation without masks as long as they're able to socially distance, as the two actors regularly do.

Seemingly in solidarity with Ana, the official Knives Out Twitter account also blocked @ArmasUpdates.

Ben and Ana first met during the filming of the Adrian Lyne–directed erotic thriller Deep Water, which is based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith and stars Ben as a jealous husband who murders the men his adulterous wife gets close to.

The film, a remake of the 1981 French thriller Eaux Profondes starring Isabelle Huppert and Jean-Louis Trintignant, is currently set for a November 13 release date.

The two took their relationship public in March when they were seen enjoying a vacation in Costa Rica and Ana's native Cuba.

The couple both have a busy schedule ahead of them.

Ana will star as Marilyn Monroe in an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates' acclaimed novel Blonde, and she'll also appear in the next Bond film, No Time To Die, which will be released on November 20.

Ben will likely have to record some new audio for Zack Snyder's director's cut of Justice League, which will premiere on HBO Max next year.

He was in the midst of filming his supporting role in The Last Duel for director Ridley Scott, which marked his first screenwriting collaboration with Matt Damon since they won Oscars for their Good Will Hunting screenplay.

It was also announced that he'll be directing and starring in a remake of the classic film Witness For The Prosecution.

Nick Suzuki’s goal lifts desperate Canadiens past Flyers, 5-3, and extends series - The Philadelphia Inquirer

Posted: 20 Aug 2020 12:42 AM PDT

The Montreal Canadiens, whose regular season was the definition of mediocrity, are playing in the Stanley Cup playoffs only because of the the NHL's expanded field.

But they don't look out of their element.

The eighth-seeded Habs finally solved Carter Hart and kept their season alive Wednesday night with a wild 5-3 win over the top-seeded Flyers in Toronto.

The Flyers have a three-games-to-two lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal, which resumes Friday at 7 p.m.

Joel Armia scored a pair of goals and Nick Suzuki snapped a 3-3 tie with 9 minutes, 1 second left to pace Montreal, which stunned Pittsburgh in the play-in series and is trying to do the same to the Flyers.

Jake Voracek (three points) scored twice in a losing cause, the first multi-goal playoff game of his career.

The Flyers' defense, so dominating in their three wins in the series, allowed a slew of Grade A chances against the desperate Canadiens.

"Their season's on the line, so you know they're going to bring their best," said defenseman Matt Niskanen, who was minus-3 in the loss. "We were just a half step slow killing plays, so they were able to connect on a few passes and get some looks in the slot and convert on a couple."

Phillip Danault's empty-net goal secured the win for the hungry Habs, who outhit the Flyers, 39-28, and had a 23-9 advantage in blocked shots. The Canadiens won despite losing one of their top forwards, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, to a game misconduct early in the second period.

It was the second time in his young career that Hart had played on back-to-back nights. Coach Alain Vigneault said it was an easy decision to go with the 22-year-old goalie, who was coming off consecutive shutouts.

"He's been playing extremely well," said Vigneault, whose team wasted three goals from its revived power play. "Tonight, there might be one or two he might want to have back, but at the end of the day, we have a lot of faith in him. He'll be fine next game."

With 9:23 left in regulation, Joel Farabee's power-play goal tied it at 3-3. Just 22 seconds later, after Nate Thompson's turnover behind the net, an all-alone Suzuki took a feed from Jonathan Drouin, made a deft move, and scored from in front to give the Canadiens 4-3 lead.

The Flyers took advantage of a five-minute major penalty on Kotkaniemi and scored a pair of power-play goals – both by Voracek – to take a 2-1 second-period lead.

The power play had been 1-for-30 in the postseason before Voracek scored his third and fourth goals of this series.

Kotkaniemi boarded Travis Sanheim, who was cut near his right eye and needed medical treatment, and he received a major penalty and game misconduct with 18:15 left in the second period. Sanheim returned to the ice a short time later.

Voracek tied the score at 1-1 when his one-timer from the top of the right circle appeared to deflect off defenseman Ben Chiarot and past goalie Carey Price, ending the Flyers' 0-for-18 power-play funk.

About four minutes later, Voracek again put a shot off Chiarot and past Price, giving the Flyers a short-lived 2-1 lead. Claude Giroux had assists on both goals, tying him for fifth in that department (45 helpers) in franchise playoff history.

With 9:48 left in the second, Montreal tied it at 2-2 when Armia (plus-4) scored his second of the night. From a tough angle on the right, Armia put a shot off Hart's left shoulder and into the net on the short side. It was a goal Hart would want back.

"Obviously, I've got to make a couple more saves," Hart said. "That's hockey at the end of the day. Just have to put it behind us and get ready for the next game."

Voracek said the Canadiens' ability to strike quickly after a Flyers goal was key.

"Every time we gained momentum from scoring a goal, we got scored on right way," he said. "During the regular season, we usually carried the momentum into the next shift and kind of put the foot on the metal. Today, they absolutely killed us with that. Kudos to them."

Before the wide-open second period ended, Brendan Gallagher ended his scoring drought on his 37th shot of the postseason to put the Habs ahead, 3-2. With the Canadiens on a power play, Gallagher knocked Suzuki's pass out of midair and beat Hart with 8:30 to go in the second.

"That's the Gally we love," Montreal interim coach Kirk Muller said. "He brought guys into the fight."

Suzuki, from the top of the right circle, fired a shot that deflected off Ivan Provorov and past Hart to give the Habs an apparent 4-2 lead with 5:26 remaining in the second. But the Flyers challenged for offside, and the goal was erased when the video review showed Drouin was indeed offside.

Montreal, blanked in its two previous games, ended its scoreless streak just 2:53 after the opening faceoff as it got a shorthanded goal from Armia.

Defenseman Xavier Ouellet fired a center-ice shot off the end boards, and Armia beat Sanheim to the carom and whipped a slot shot past Hart. That ended Hart's scoreless streak at 122:52, seventh-longest in the franchise's playoff history.

The team that has scored first has won each of the five games in the series.

"We have to get ready for a Game 6," Voracek said. "We knew it wasn't going to be easy. We just have to keep working hard and got to earn those two match points."

Breakaways

Sean Couturier had two assists, three hits, and won 65% of his 23 faceoffs. ... Kevin Hayes had seven shots and was stopped on two breakaways, one in which he was pulled down from behind. ... Voracek called it the most physical game of the series. ... On the power play, the Flyers were 3 for 7, and Montreal was 1 for 6. It was the first time the Flyers had three power-play goals in a playoff game since 2012 against Pittsburgh. ... Gallagher lost a tooth apparently after taking a stick from Niskanen in the final period. ... Shea Weber had six of the Canadiens' 23 blocked shots. ... The Flyers won 60 percent of the faceoffs.

Australia signs deal for Oxford coronavirus vaccine - Basingstoke Gazette

Posted: 19 Aug 2020 11:08 PM PDT

Australia has ordered 25 million doses of a Covid-19 vaccine being developed by Oxford University in partnership with pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca, the country's prime minister said.

Scott Morrison promised to make the vaccine "as mandatory as you can" in an interview with Melbourne's 3AW radio station, before touring AstraZeneca's laboratory in Sydney.

He told reporters at the facility: "Today is a day of hope and Australia needs hope, the world needs hope, when it comes to this coronavirus.

"And should we be in a position for the trials to be successful, we would hope that this would be made available early next year. If it can be done sooner than that, great."

In another radio interview on Wednesday, Mr Morrison said he had spoken with French leader Emmanuel Macron recently about how the AstraZeneca vaccine was "one of the best prospects in the world today".

The British-Swedish company is the largest company listed on the London Stock Exchange by market capitalisation.

The UK has secured up to 100 million doses of the vaccine, which has reached phase three trials in Brazil and South Africa. Preliminary results suggest it is safe and induces an immune reaction.

It is one of six different coronavirus vaccine candidates in development that the UK has access to, across four different types, representing some 340 million doses.

Priority groups such as frontline health workers, those with serious diseases, the elderly and ethnic minorities are first in line to receive a jab, should a vaccine be approved.

China state papers back Wuhan park after viral pool party - TheChronicleHerald.ca

Posted: 19 Aug 2020 09:47 PM PDT

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chinese state newspapers threw their support behind an amusement park in the central city of Wuhan on Thursday after pictures of a densely packed pool party at the park went viral overseas amid concerns about the spread of COVID-19.

Videos and photos of an electronic music festival at the Wuhan Maya Beach Water Park on July 11 raised eyebrows overseas, but reflected life returning to normal in the city where the virus causing COVID-19 was first detected, the official English-language China Daily newspaper said in a front-page story.

Another story in the Global Times, a tabloid published by the ruling Communist Party's People's Daily, cited Wuhan residents as saying the pool party reflected the city's success in its virus-control efforts.

While the coronavirus was first reported in Wuhan, strict lockdown measures that paralysed the Chinese economy earlier this year have kept its spread in check.

China on Thursday reported its fourth straight day of zero locally transmitted coronavirus infections.

The stories come after a World Health Organization epidemiologist warned earlier this week that people, especially the young, are not invincible to the pandemic, despite their wishes to live normal lives.

More than 22.27 million people have been reported to have been infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 781,162 have died, according to a Reuters tally.

Artis Changes Consumer Financing for Businesses - AiThority

Artis Credit enables businesses to become the "face of financing," offering diverse loan options direct-to-consumer backed by a growing network of lenders

Artis Technologies provides modern lending solutions for businesses to offer affordable, low-friction financing to their customers at the point of need. Today the company introduced Artis Credit, a platform for businesses to offer unique loan options direct-to-consumer with no start-up cost and minimal risk. It's made possible by connecting financial institutions ready to provide financing through Artis' API-based platform that uses alternative data sources, complex machine learning and AI to present real-time loan offers to individual borrowers.

When businesses partner with Artis, they connect with service providers able to extend unbiased credit to their customers on the spot; it's a growing network of banks, credit unions, and lenders. Artis Credit equips businesses to be the face of that financing while giving lenders an easy pathway to gain a new share of the consumer loan market. The platform is ideal for many consumer-facing industries with higher cost products and services, including home improvement, HVAC, plumbing and landscape/hardscape, as well as elective medical, dental, manufacturing, auto repair and more.

Barclay Keith, CEO of Artis, said, "We understand that businesses everywhere need longer-term solutions to help sustain their presence in the community. Industries like home improvement and remodeling are continuing to show consumer demand, and they are a perfect example of how businesses can offer consumers low cost, real-time funding to make financial investments a reality through Artis Credit. Our approach also helps by providing integrated value chain technology to increase ticket size and sales by offering instant promotional financing."

Artis Credit gives businesses a digital self-service portal to manage the full experience, from application to funding. Businesses select which type of loan to present to their customers during the onboarding process. Based on this selection and customer qualifications, the platform will generate offers. Artis ensures decisions remain unbiased by assigning a participating financial institution or lender after the consumer has accepted a loan offer. And, Artis works within a closed-looped payment network to control and protect all transactions, this helps to make sure loan funds are only spent with that business.

Financial institutions wanting to do more to influence the success of businesses in their communities can also consider Artis Connect, a complete private-label platform enabling them to offer downstream credit through existing business customer relationships – as such, helping drive demand for local goods and services.

Coronavirus vaccine update, August 20: Australia to make vaccines free for its citizens - The Indian Express

Coronavirus Vaccine Tracker, August 20: A day after Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a Coronavirus vaccine deal with pharma major AstraZeneca and said all Australians will get the vaccinated for free, he went on to suggest that he would also like it to become mandatory for everyone in his country. Within hours, however, he was forced to backtrack and clarify his statement.

"I would expect it to be as mandatory as you can possibly make," Morrison was reported as having said in a radio programme.

"We are talking about a pandemic that has destroyed the global economy and taken the lives of hundreds of thousands all around the world, and over 430 Australians. So, you know, we need the most extensive and comprehensive response to this to get Australia back to normal," the Prime Minister said.

1x1

But within hours, he had to alter his position and clarify, in another radio programme, that all he meant to say was that he would like to "encourage" everyone to take the Coronavirus vaccine.

"We can't hold someone down and make them take it," he said.

In some countries, there is a relatively low level of confidence in the vaccines being developed, mainly because of the haste with which they are being produced. Several opinion polls in the United States and Europe have shown that a large proportion of people were unsure about taking the vaccine when it becomes available.

In the United States, Anthony Fauci, an infectious disease specialist and one of the most trusted voices on the current pandemic, was asked the same question, about the possibility of making a vaccine mandatory for everyone, and he said he did not think it would be made mandatory in the United States.

"I don't think you will ever see mandating of a vaccine particularly for the general public. If someone refuses the vaccine in the general public, then there is nothing you can do about that," he said.

Russia releases video of its vaccine being produced

Possibly to counter the growing scepticism regarding the Coronavirus vaccine that it has produced, Russia has released a video showing its vaccines being produced in a factory.

The 40-second video has been released by the Russian Health Ministry. Russia claims to have developed the world's first vaccine for novel Coronavirus, but the global response has been rather cold. Several scientists and experts have expressed doubts over the safety and effectiveness of the Russian vaccine, mainly because it has been approved for use without undergoing all the tests that are considered necessary.

Hunt for Coronavirus vaccine: The story so far

  • More than 160 vaccine candidates in pre-clinical or clinical trials
  • 29 of them in clinical trials
  • Six in final stages, phase-III of human trials
  • At least eight candidate vaccines being developed in India. Two of these have entered phase -II trials after completing phase-I.

Victorians blocked from studying in SA as state welcomes 300 foreign students - Sky News Australia

Posted: 19 Aug 2020 09:08 PM PDT

Victorian students have questioned the South Australian government for granting foreign university students an exemption to enter in a special pilot program while blocking students across the border. Foreign students are poised to jet into SA under a plan to revive the $2 billion education sector in a national-first pilot program involving 300 students. SA Premier Steven Marshall said "we're not going to do anything which is going to disadvantage the very good situation we have from a health perspective". However, Victorian Opposition Leader Michael O'Brien said the whole situation sounded like "bureaucracy gone mad". "There is a way around it; just treat Victorians the same as you would overseas students," he said. Victorians will face tighter border restrictions from Friday when only very specific essential workers will be allowed to cross the border into South Australia. Image: News Corp Australia

Billie Eilish performs ‘My Future’ for the first time at the Democratic National Convention - NME

Posted: 19 Aug 2020 09:08 PM PDT

Billie Eilish has given her latest single 'My Future' its live debut today (August 20), performing it at the third night of the virtual Democratic National Convention.

Eilish is just one of many performers that have played the convention this week, with artists like Maggie Rogers and Leon Bridges performing at the beginning of the week.

Watch the performance below:

Before she took to the stage alongside her brother FINNEAS, Eilish posted on Instagram pleading her followers to vote for Joe Biden in the forthcoming presidential election.

"Donald Trump is destroying our country and everything we care about," Eilish said.

"We need leaders who will solve problems like climate change and COVID, not deny them. Leaders who will fight against systemic racism and inequality. And that starts by voting for someone who understands how much is at stake.

"Someone who's building a team that shares our values. It starts with voting against Donald Trump and for Joe Biden."

'My Future' is the second single Eilish has released this year, following the titular theme song she recorded for the next film in the James Bond franchise 'No Time To Die'.

Upon the single's release, Eilish revealed that it had taken on new meaning with recent events.

"It's a song that's really really personal and special to me. When we wrote this song, it was exactly where my head was at – hopeful, excited and a craaaazy amount of self-reflection and self-growth," she wrote.

"But recently it has also taken on a lot of new meaning in the context of what's happening in the world now. I hope you can all find meaning in it for yourselves."

After sexual harassment accusations, Dee Kosh faces another allegation of being a bully - The Independent

After sexual harassment accusations, Dee Kosh faces another allegation of being a bully - The Independent

Singapore — Following sexual harassment accusations against local YouTuber Dee Kosh, social media influencer Preetipls has claimed in a Facebook post published on Wednesday (Aug 19) that he had bullied her brother and threatened to destroy him in 2018.

Over the past weekend, several individuals have alleged that the 32-year-old tried to sexually groom teenage boys under the guise of wanting to work with them. The alleged victims shared screenshots online that appeared to show inappropriate messages from Dee — whose name is Darryl Koshy — offering boys half his age large amounts of money in exchange for sexual favours.

Dee initially denied all accusations and engaged a lawyer to issue a cease-and-desist letter to an alleged victim. He later admitted some wrongdoing. In an apology post published on Monday (Aug 17), he said that he now "admit(s) that there is truth to some of the things which are being said now, and I am sorry to the people I have hurt in the process".

Preetipls has since claimed that Dee bullied her older brother, Subhas Nair. In her  Facebook post, Preetipls — whose name is Preeti Nair — claimed that Dee made her brother a target after a disagreement that erupted in December 2018.

The influencer added that she has helped link Dee's alleged victims to legal professionals and asked those who need help to reach out to her.

Platforms successfully stopped a COVID conspiracy video from going viral - The Verge

Posted: 19 Aug 2020 06:47 PM PDT

One of the more hopeful developments at tech platforms this year has been their investment in removing misinformation related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter were all relatively quick to acknowledge the threat that COVID hoaxes represent, and have worked to purge it from their networks. Enforcement of those misinformation policies has sometimes lagged behind the companies' public statements, though. A piece of anti-vaccination agitprop catchily titled "Plandemic" racked up millions of views before it was spotted and taken down by the platforms in May. More worryingly, a new piece of propaganda pushing a phony COVID cure was seen by 20 million people on Facebook alone before the company got it under control.

On Monday, the misinformation researcher Ben Decker warned that a true "Plandemic" sequel was coming. Makers of the original video promised that a second installment would premiere Tuesday, and promoted it at least 887 times on Facebook, from pages with hundreds of thousands of followers. The fact that the new video was likely to be taken down became part of the marketing campaign around it. All that remained was to see what happened when it actually went live.

Somewhat surprisingly, LinkedIn acted first, removing a key account promoting the video from its platform for violating the terms of service before it could even premiere. And when it did — under the hilariously bad name Plandemic: Indoctornation — the New York Times' Davey Alba helpfully chronicled the various pieces of misinformation it contains. In short: bog-standard anti-vaxx conspiracy theories, rooted in the notion that a handful of shadowy elites brought the world to a standstill in order to profit from it. If you've heard it all before, it's easy to dismiss. But we also know that this stuff is spreading like wildfire online, particularly within Facebook groups, and that anti-vaxx sentiment could slow the pandemic recovery and limit our prospects of herd immunity.

So what happened after the video went up? Adi Robertson picks up the story at The Verge:

Social media sites are trying to stop the spread of Plandemic: Indoctornation, a follow-up to the Plandemic conspiracy video about the novel coronavirus. As NBC News reporter Brandy Zadrozny noted, Facebook blocks users from reposting a link to the new video, which was uploaded to an external site earlier today. Twitter doesn't block the video link, but it sends users who click it to a warning screen, saying that the link is "potentially spammy or unsafe."

Twitter confirmed to The Verge that it's warning people rather than blocking the link; the company will evaluate any short clips that are directly uploaded on a case-by-case basis and may remove any that it deems dangerous misinformation. Streaming channel London Real, which posted the video, reported that it was suspended by LinkedIn before its premiere. According to CrowdTangle, London Real's original post linking to the video has about 53,000 interactions on Facebook. A reposted version of the video can be found on YouTube, but it currently has under 200 views.

There's still some possibility that Indoctornation will find new life on the social platforms. But it appears that for the most part, this time platforms passed the test: they identified the video as being in violation of their standards in real time, stopped hosting it and prevented users from sharing it. In 2020, this is what successful content policy looks like: you can't prevent every bad thing from ever being uploaded, but you can identify it quickly and take effective action. Last month, a video like this got 20 million views. Today, on YouTube, it got fewer than 200. Work like this is hard, but it's also possible, and I think it's important to call it out when it's done correctly.

Of course, you could say I'm damning the platforms with faint praise. As Kevin Roose notes, Indoctornation was the rare piece of misinformation to be announced 887 times ahead of its arrival. It was misinformation with a premiere date. Contrast that with last month's content moderation disaster, which was essentially a bunch of nonsense that was uttered during a live stream of a press conference. Looking at the circumstances of both videos, it's not hard to understand why Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter had an easier time on Tuesday than they did in July.

And Indoctornation is arguably less dangerous than previous COVID hoaxes, since it doesn't attempt to give medical advice and is mostly an extended riff on the idea that Bill Gates is conspiring against you. That's one reason why the video is still technically allowed on Facebook — it's just placed under a fact-checking warning, and will not get wide distribution in the feed.

"Given the previous Plandemic video violated our COVID misinformation policies, we blocked access to that domain from our services," a spokesman told me. "This latest video contains COVID-19 claims that our fact-checking partners have repeatedly rated false so we have reduced its distribution and added a warning label showing their findings to anyone who sees it."

YouTube told me that for its part, it had seen few attempts to upload Indoctornation, and is removing full uploads as it sees them for violating its policies around COVID misinformation. If other uploads contain segments of the original video, they'll be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, the company told me.

I want to be clear that the issues around health misinformation on social platforms are much bigger than the down-ranking of a single piece of content. The information ecosystem is clearly polluted, and people are suffering. Adam Satariano took a look at the issue this week at the New York Times:

Last week, researchers said that at least 800 people worldwide died in the first three months of the year, and thousands more were hospitalized, from unfounded claims online that ingesting highly concentrated alcohol would kill the virus. Their findings, based on studying rumors circulating on the web, were published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

Doctors' frustrations fill Facebook groups and online forums. The American Medical Association and other groups representing doctors say the false information spreading online is harming the public health response to the disease. The World Health Organization is developing methods to measure the harm of virus-related misinformation online, and over two weeks in July the group hosted an online conference with doctors, public health experts and internet researchers about how to address the problem.

But the platforms' actions on Tuesday showed us that progress is possible. They know how to do the right thing, and they can. Especially when the bad guys tell them where to look.

The Ratio

Today in news that could affect public perception of the big tech platforms.

Trending down: Facebook abandoned thousands of gallons of drilling fluid under the ocean floor just off the coast of Oregon in April. The company was constructing a landing site for an undersea telecommunications cable when when it hit an unexpected snag.

Governing

Some Justice Department staffers are worried the case against Google isn't ready, despite Attorney General William Barr pushing for a lawsuit this summer. They say the department needs more time to consider whether the millions of pages of documents they have are enough to win an antitrust case in court. Brent Kendall at The Wall Street Journal has the story:

Dozens of government antitrust lawyers are on teams investigating whether the search giant has used its dominance to stifle competition. One group is focused on Google's search practices, and some of its members have voiced the belief that there are vulnerabilities in a case built around those issues, people familiar with the matter said. Details about the Justice Department's legal theories couldn't be learned.

Another team is examining Google's online advertising business, where the company owns industry-leading tools at every link in the complex chain between online publishers and advertisers. Some attorneys working on that aspect of the probe aren't ready to move forward because they are still untangling the new and complex issues raised by that part of Google's business and how it affects the many companies in the digital ecosystem, the people said.

A sprawling report released by a Republican-controlled Senate panel confirmed key facts about Russia's attempted meddling in the 2016 election. Industry

Oracle is in talks to acquire TikTok, a move that would challenge Microsoft. Both companies are far ahead of other US firms that have expressed interest. It's notable because Oracle founder Larry Ellison has spent much of the past four years sucking up to Trump. Alex Sherman at CNBC has the scoop:

Oracle doesn't have a consumer-facing social media or video business. In theory, Oracle could use customer data collected by TikTok to improve its marketing products, but spending tens of billions to acquire a consumer social media company would be a significant departure for the company. Oracle has struggled to find new avenues of growth as Amazon Web Services has dominated cloud computing, followed by Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. In Oracle's fiscal fourth quarter, revenue declined 6% to $10.4 billion. Oracle has a history of being acquisitive but has slowed down on large deals in recent years.

TikTok started a website and Twitter account to address misinformation in real time. "Let us set the record straight," the company said on the website. "TikTok has never provided any U.S. user data to the Chinese government, nor would it do so if asked." My basic feeling is, if you have to say "let us set the record straight," you have already lost the argument. This is the 2020 version of the old Facebook "Hard Questions" blog, and seems likely to have about the same level of impact on brand perception. (Nathan Crooks / Bloomberg)

TikTok launched a creator ambassador program in 2019 to help a small group of influencers grow their followings on the app. The program has several perks, like all-expenses-paid trips, connections with brands, and access to new app features.

Point’s OT goal helps Lightning eliminate Blue Jackets in Game 5 - NHL

Posted: 19 Aug 2020 05:42 PM PDT

Brayden Point's second overtime goal of the series helped the Lightning finish off the Blue Jackets with a 5-4 win in Game 5.

Point, who had four goals in the series, including the winner in the fifth overtime of Game 1, was left alone in front following a Columbus defensive zone turnover. Nikita Kucherov picked up the turned over puck and whipped a pass to find Point for the series winner.

It was a game that featured four different lead changes and comebacks from both teams. Tampa got out quickly to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Tyler Johnson and Blake Coleman in the opening 6:39 of the first period. But Columbus wouldn't go away that easy.

[NBC 2020 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFF HUB]

Nick Foligno, Kevin Stenlund, Alexander Wennberg, and Oliver Bjorkstrand would score as the Blue Jackets flipped the game in their favor with a 4-2 lead. The Lightning made quick work to knot the score again with Kevin Shattenkirk and Anthony Cirelli getting goals in a span of 6:21 late in the third period to force overtime.

It was Point, who had seven points in the series, who made the pass that banked off Cirelli's skate for the tying goal.

"We kept an even-keel on the bench for the most part," Point said afterward. "Second period I thought we started to get away from our game and then they took it to us. After that fourth goal went in, we kind of almost just settled down, got back to playing our system and our game."

Bruins bounce Hurricanes in Game 5

Avalanche end Coyotes' season with blowout

Golden Knights eliminated Blackhawks (also on Wednesday, technically, in some time zones)

It's been 491 days since the Blue Jackets completed their shocking sweep of the Presidents' Trophy winning Lightning last season. It was no surprise that the rematch a year later was a tight series with four of the five games being decided by a single goal.

Tampa now gets some downtime to watch how the rest of the Eastern Conference First Round plays out as they await their next opponent.

After crushing the Coyotes in Game 4, the Avalanche put up a rerun in Game 5, eliminating Arizona 7-1. Despite the Coyotes grabbing a win in this series, the Avs advance after putting together one of the most one-sided First Round efforts you will see.

(Yes, that's two straight 7-1 wins for the Avalanche. Yikes.)

[NBC 2020 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFF HUB]

Avalanche dominate Game 5, Coyotes eliminated after another blowout

Less than five minutes in, Nazem Kadri scored another big goal, once again on the power play. It wouldn't be Kadri's last goal of Game 5, either, as he scored twice in the first period. Samuel Girard connect on the power play as well in the first, as the Avs dominated a listless Coyotes team through 20.

Speaking of reruns, the second period felt a lot like the first. The Avalanche poured on three more goals to make it 6-0. During that frame, Nathan MacKinnon really took over.

Game 5 looked over after the first, but the second erased even a hint of a doubt.

Mercifully, the Coyotes replaced Darcy Kuemper during the empty third. Kuemper played incredibly well early in this First Round series, including stealing a Game 3 win for the Coyotes (and keeping Arizona in most of Game 1). Unfortunately, the Coyotes didn't develop much of a plan beyond "depend almost entirely on Darcy Kuemper and some bounces," and the Avalanche rolled them over. About the only positive thing from Game 5 was that the Coyotes scored a garbage goal to avoid being shut out.

After this series, the Avalanche only look more like a superpower in the West. You probably don't need a caveat like "rising" or "future" any longer; it sure looks like the Avs have arrived. Of course, the Second Round should present the sort of competition that can confirm or deny such feelings.

A fuzzy future for the Coyotes after being blown out again by Avs

Yes, the Coyotes technically "made" the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Still, after a dramatic and messy split with now-former GM John Chayka, the Coyotes face terrifying uncertainty.

Whether Steve Sullivan remains in place, or someone else slides into the GM role, righting the Coyotes' ship won't be easy. Chayka might be gone, but his fingerprints will be hard to remove, considering a salary structure loaded with lengthy, sometimes-ugly-looking extensions. Is there much on this roster or farm system that indicates the Coyotes will be able to hang with the Avs of the world in the future? Will the Coyotes need to clean house amid financial uncertainty for the league as a whole?

(It's almost impossible to imagine Taylor Hall choosing to re-sign with the Coyotes, in the unlikely event they'd find a way to afford him at all.)

Here's hoping that Darcy Kuemper and/or Antti Raanta can maintain at least most of the stellar goaltending the Coyotes received over most of the past two seasons. That's probably the brightest side to look at for a team that's still going through some dark times.

So far, it is indeed looking like "Elimination Wednesday." The Bruins rank as the latest team to advance to the Second Round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs after knocking out the Hurricanes in Game 5. The Bruins won Game 5 by a score of 2-1 to win the series 4-1, leaving the Hurricanes with a sad end to a solid season.

Special teams makes difference as Bruins eliminate Hurricanes in Game 5; Pastrnak makes impact

If this is a sign that the Bruins' power play will be a factor as it's been so often during recent seasons, then the B's are going to look a lot like the team that easily won the 2020 Presidents' Trophy.

Actually, you could say similar things about David Pastrnak. You'd think he hadn't missed any time considering how Pastrnak played for the Bruins against the Hurricanes in Game 5.

While Petr Mrazek thwarted some great Pastrnak attempts, including on a breakaway, Pastrnak still looked dangerous. That including registering two primary assists on key power-play goals for the Bruins.

No doubt, special teams represented a big difference-maker. The Bruins connected on their first two power plays of Game 5, including Patrice Bergeron's sneaky goal with mere seconds remaining in the second period. In that case, Bergeron and the Bruins made Jordan Martinook and the Hurricanes pay for a bad boarding hit that could have justified much more than a two-minute minor.

The Bruins made those power-play opportunities count, while the Hurricanes couldn't connect on theirs (0-for-3) in Game 5.

Painful end to Hurricanes' season

Much like the knocked-out Blue Jackets, the Hurricanes put forth credible efforts despite being bounced by the Bruins in five games. That said, there must be some crushing thoughts of "what could have been."

What if James Reimer didn't get burned on that pivotal Jake DeBrusk goal in Game 4? Could the Hurricanes have accomplished more with David Pastrnak on the shelf? Rod Brind'Amour might still be a little irritated by some officiating bad breaks earlier in the First Round.

But the Hurricanes nonetheless see a bit of a step back after that breakthrough, jerky 2019-20 season. From here, they'll face plenty of questions about how to get to that next level, including whether Justin Williams will retire.
