Portland Timbers enter tie for 1st in the West after victory over Seattle Sounders FC originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest
The Portland Timbers are back where they belong as the best team in the West.
Well, kind of.
After defeating rival Seattle (6-3-3) 1-0 at Providence Park Wednesday evening and earning three points, the Portland Timbers (6-3-4) have jumped up the standings to enter a tie for first place in the Western Conference with the team they just beat.
The Sounders and Timbers each have 21 points on the season.
It wasn't pretty, but Portland got the one goal it needed in the 13th minute when Yimmi Chará scored for the third consecutive game to give the Timbers the early advantage.

Jeremy Ebobisse earned the assist off the through ball, his second assist of the season. Since the season-ending ACL tear to Sebastián Blanco, Ebobisse has been asked to create more chances than finish them as Portland plays him on the wing rather than at striker.
Following the Timbers goal, Portland parked the bus, conceding the ball to Seattle who ended the game with 66% possession. Regardless, Seattle only had 6 shots on goal (19 total shots) and no goals scored to leave the pitch without a single point.
With Steve Clark not allowing a single goal, it was the first clean sheet for the Timbers since March 8th, a 1-0 win over Nashville.
Next, the Timbers will host Vancouver Whitecaps FC as the designated away team on Sunday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m. PT.
