VASSAR TWP — A man is in police custody after he was accused of trying to enter two children’s bedroom in a Tuscola County mobile home park.
About 11:53 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7, Michigan State Police troopers responded to a residence within the Wood Valley Mobile Home Park in Vassar Township for a breaking-and-entering in progress. Tuscola County Central Dispatch advised two children were inside the home when a man opened the window to their bedroom from the outside and tried to enter through it.
The children immediately awakened their mother, who ran outside and saw footprints outside her children’s window. She also found a black sandal in the road near her house.
The mother then called 911 to report the incident.
Troopers also discovered a neighbor at an adjacent mobile home had observed the man leaving from the area. Witnesses described the suspect as having long black hair and wearing a red shirt and black coat, troopers said.
Troopers erected a perimeter to secure the area. As they were interviewing witnesses, they saw a man matching the suspect’s description walking through the mobile home park near the scene.
Troopers contacted the subject, who was identified as the would-be intruder by the children and their neighbor.
The man was highly intoxicated and admitted to consuming both alcohol and drugs, troopers said. He refused to cooperate with troopers and, upon them notifying him he was under arrest, he resisted. Troopers then forcefully took the man into custody.
The subsequent investigation revealed the arrestee lived in a mobile home in the park. After he’d attempted to break into the kids’ room, he returned to his home, obtained another set of shoes, and then left his home again, troopers said.
Troopers contacted several relatives of the suspect at his residence and located the matching sandal to the one found near the scene of the attempted breaking-and-entering.
The 22-year-old arrestee was lodged at the Tuscola County Jail on charges of unlawful entry to an occupied residence and multiple counts of resisting and obstructing police. It was also discovered he had several active warrants for his arrest.
The man’s name is being withheld pending arraignment in court.
Troopers were assisted during the investigation by the Vassar Police Department and the Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office.
