Just hours after the Columbus Crew traded goalkeeper Jon Kempin to D.C. United, the Black & Gold have officially added a new goalkeeper to the squad with the signing of Re-Entry Draft selection Eric Dick. Columbus selected Dick in the second-round of the Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 22 and has now signed him to the roster.

“We are pleased to welcome Eric to Columbus,” Crew president and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “After earning beneficial USL Championship experience over the last few years, we look forward to working with him to continue his development as a goalkeeper.”

Dick will join Eloy Room, new-signing Evan Bush and Matt Lampson as the fourth goalkeeper on the squad. This is the first time Dick has moved clubs in MLS after spending the last three seasons as a member of the Sporting Kansas City roster.

Dick was eligible in the Re-Entry draft because SKC declined his contract option after spending the entirety of the 2020 season on loan playing in the United Soccer League. He spent most of the season on loan at Phoenix Rising FC where Dick played just three games.

The Crew’s new goalkeeper played college soccer at Butler University in Indiana. At Butler, Dick started 71 games in net for the Bulldogs and managed 28 clean sheets. His performances in 2017, his senior season, earned him the award of the Big East’s Goalkeeper of the Year award. Dick won one conference title and led Butler to two NCAA Tournament appearances.

After his stellar college career, Dick was selected 13th in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft by Kansas City as the first goalkeeper picked in that class. Sporting immediately loaned him out to the team’s affiliate team, Swope Park Rangers of the USL, where he played 15 games and earned four shutouts in 2018.

In 2019, Dick was brought back to Kansas City to make his MLS debut in a Decision Day match against FC Dallas. SKC fell 6-0 in that game in what is still Dick’s only appearance in an MLS match. The 26 year old from Roeland Park, Kansas now has a fresh start in Columbus with the MLS Cup champions.

This is the Black & Gold’s fourth new acquisition of the 2021 MLS offseason. The Crew signed attacker Kevin Molino this past Thursday, brought in veteran striker Bradley Wright-Phillips on Dec. 23, and acquired Bush from the Vancouver Whitecaps hours after the Crew won the MLS Cup Final against the Seattle Sounders.

The roster is back up to 25 players and the team owns three picks in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft. The draft will take place on Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. ET.

The Crew’s current 2021 roster:

Goalkeepers (4): Evan Bush, Eric Dick, Matt Lampson, Eloy Room

Defenders (9): Harrison Afful, Chris Cadden, Waylon Francis, Aboubacar Keita, Grant Lillard, Jonathan Mensah, Milton Valenzuela, Josh Williams, Vito Wormgoor

Midfielders (9): Artur, Sebastian Berhalter, Luis Diaz, Derrick Etienne Jr., Aidan Morris, Kevin Molino, Darlington Nagbe, Pedro Santos, Lucas Zelarayan

Forwards (3): Miguel Berry, Bradley Wright-Phillips, Gyasi Zardes
