Restrictions imposed by Finland’s government on the freedom of movement of European Union citizens’ when entering the country are necessary to halt the further spread of the Coronavirus outbreak as well as its new variants.
These comments of Finland’s Ministry of Interior, together with other key ministries, have been addressed to the European Commission as a response to the latter’s addressed letter to the Finnish authorities, urging Finland to terminate its imposed entry and movement restrictions, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
“Restrictions on movement, which are considered necessary, are intended to safeguard public health and, in particular, the right to life of everyone,” the statement of Finland’s government reads.
On February 22, 2021, the European Commission sent a letter to Finland calling on the country’s government to put an end to the entry restrictions as well as restrictions on freedom of movement imposed by Finland’s authorities in a bid to stop the further spread of the virus.
Similar letters the European Commission also sent to other countries, such as Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, Germany and Hungary, regarding their imposed entry restriction and other COVID-19 measures introduced at their entry ports.
The European Commission considers that the same measures prevent the EU’s citizens’ free movement and cause difficulties.
The Commission, in its letter addressed in February to the German Ambassador in Brussels Michael Clauss, highlighted that the public’s health protections amid the ongoing outbreak could be attained by less restrictive measures.
The same asserted that the imposed measures introduced by the countries mentioned above are unjustified and disproportionate.
However, the recent Coronavirus pandemic situation in Finland does not permit the country’s authorities to ease the restrictions, the authorities insist. In addition to that, Finland’s government last week reported that the virus has profoundly affected the country, leading the authorities to introduce tighter regulations, including declaring a state of emergency.
‘The government, along with the President of the Republic, has declared a state of emergency in the country,” Prime Minister Sanna Marin pointed out last week during a press conference.
More than 62,060 have contracted the Coronavirus in Finland, and 767 persons have died, based on Worldometers’ statistics. These figures reveal that 46,000 Finnish citizens have been recovered from the disease, while there are a total of 15,296 active cases.
As COVID-19 new strains continue to affect the countries worldwide, the governments continuously search for new preventive measures that would be effective to halt the virus’s further spread.
Last month, Finnish authorities announced that they decided to prolong their entry restrictions for another month. Such a decision was taken on February 18 by Finland’s government as an additional preventive measure to protect their citizens’ lives.
