Freshman forward Martice Mitchell became the fifth Gophers men’s basketball player to enter the NCAA transfer portal in March, a source confirmed to the Pioneer Press on Tuesday.
Mitchell, a four-star prospect according to rivals.com, played only 23 total minutes in seven games for the U in the 2020-21 season. The 6-foot-10 Chicago native averaged 1.3 points and 0.3 rebounds.
Mitchell joins guards Marcus Carr, Jamal Mashburn Jr., Tre’ Williams and center Sam Freeman among U players who have entered the portal in the past two weeks. News of Mitchell was first reported by Verbal Commits.
During last season, the U had forward Jarvis Omersa and guard David Mutaf leave the team, and before the end of the season, senior center Eric Curry said he would retire to pursue a career in coaching.
All told as of Tuesday, at least eight of the 13 scholarship players on Minnesota’s roster to start last season are on the move.
