The Palestinian Authority has ordered a total lockdown for Monday, amid reports of an “unprecedented” third wave of the coronavirus.

Over the past 24 hours, Palestinians under PA control in Yehuda and Shomron have seen 1,798 new cases and hospitals reached full capacity over the weekend, according to the PA Health Ministry.

There are currently 20,694 active cases among Palestinians — 18,599 in the PA and 2,095 in the Gaza Strip. According to the PA Health Ministry, 2,255 Palestinians have died of virus since the outbreak of the pandemic last March.

Around 18.6 percent of coronavirus tests came back positive across the region on Sunday, according to Palestinian Health Ministry figures.

“Given that many Palestinians are not being tested, the true infection rate is likely twice the figures we’ve announced,” health official Osama al-Najjar told Voice of Palestine Radio.
