Suzy Whaley was the first woman to be elected to serve as an officer for the PGA of America. Four years later, she became the first woman to be elected president of the organization, serving a two-year term.
Whaley has been a pioneer in the game of golf. Next month, she will be properly acknowledged for all she has contributed to the game in Connecticut and nationwide.
Whaley, a former state resident, will be inducted into the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame. Whaley will be inducted on July 29 at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield. The private course is hosting the third U.S. Senior Women’s Open from July 29-Aug. 1.
Whaley, 54, helped push for inclusion and diversity during her two-year tenure as president. Among the events she helped create were the Women’s PGA Cup, the Girls Junior PGA Championship and the Golf Emergency Relief Fund, provided to thousands working in the golf industry who were in need.
Whaley won the Connecticut Women’s Open three times. She played on the LPGA Tour twice, in 1990 and 1993. But her pinnacle moment as a player came when she won the 2002 Connecticut PGA Championship, which came with an exemption into the 2003 Greater Hartford Open. Whaley had become the first woman to qualify for a PGA Tour event since Babe Didrikson Zaharias in 1945.
Whaley worked as the head pro at Blue Fox Run Golf Course in Avon and is a two-time Connecticut PGA Teacher of the Year.
Whaley is also an honorary director for the First Tee of Connecticut. She was a longtime Farmington resident and is now the director of instruction at the Country Club of Mirasol in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
