Traffic near the Pembina Port of Entry is at a near standstill as of 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, the North Dakota Highway Patrol reported in a news release.

Northbound Interstate 29 motor vehicle traffic is essentially at a standstill, the release said. The international border remains open for essential travel, but significant delays for those motorists traveling into Canada should be expected.

A reason for the delay was not given in the release.

The wait time at the Emerson, Manitoba, and Pembina, N.D., crossing was listed at more than three hours for commercial traffic as of 9 p.m. Friday, according to a Canadian government website.

For questions regarding the delay and travel restrictions into Canada, contact the Canada Border Services Agency, the Highway Patrol said.

Delays are being reported at northern border crossings across the country hours after some Canadian border workers began a strike action as the result of stalled contract negotiations with the federal government. The strike comes just three days before the country is set to allow American leisure travelers across the border for the first time in nearly a year and a half.

Reuters reported that wait time for commercial traffic at crossings in parts of the Pacific Northwest was up to more than five hours as of Friday evening, according to government data. The Reuters report also noted that the busiest land crossing between the two countries located near Detroit, Mich., had wait times of two and a half hours.

Canadian border workers are seeking a new contract that includes better protections against what they claim is a toxic workplace culture at CBSA, and greater parity with other law enforcement agencies across Canada, among other demands.

The Canadian border has been closed to nonessential traffic since March 2020, and is set to open at 12:01 a.m. Eastern on Monday, Aug. 9.
