Hungary, Poland, Czechia and Slovakia, also known as Visegrad Group or V4 countries, as well as Austria and Slovenia, have discussed the Afghan migration flux detected in the last months in their territories.
In a conference hosted by Hungary on October 5, countries’ respective representatives agreed it was necessary to help Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries shelter Afghans until their safety situation is stable, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Minister Roman Mikulec stated that Slovakia is ready to help those countries affected by the migration wave to prevent the 2005 migration crisis from happening all over again. According to him, the Visegrad Group, Slovenia and Austria should agree to add people and equipment at the external borders. Otherwise, migrants will continue to head further west.
“As for the return of migrants who do not have the right to asylum, it is necessary to cooperate with transit countries so that they are willing to take back these people at least until Afghanistan acquires the status of a safe country,” Mikulec said.
As per entry rules regarding Coronavirus, all countries agreed to follow the recommendations of the EU Council to introduce non-essential travel restrictions to the EU and discussed adopting standard entry regulations in order to prevent third-country nationals from choosing the country with the lowest epidemiological measures for transit, as Minister Mikulec noted.
Like his Slovak counterpart, Sándor Pintér, Hungary’s Interior Minister, agreed that the EU’s external borders need to be protected.
“As yet, no one knows how great the next migration wave to Europe will be or how to carry out border protection obligations while also meeting asylum expectations,” Pintér added.
Previously, the EU Border and Coast Guard Agency, FRONTEX, revealed that the number of illegal border crossers increased by 64 per cent this year, reaching about 103,630 detected cases. Moreover, the highest number of unlawful passages for August was noted on Lithuania’s border with Belarus, with 4,116 detections out of a total of 5,300.
However, the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) received about 50,000 asylum applications during July, marking a significant increase in the figure than the previous month. The top nationalities to seek asylum in the EU are Syrians, Afghans, Turks, Pakistanis and Iraqis.
The number of Afghans applying for international protections during July has increased by 21 per cent and accounts for 7,300 applications. This number has been rising for five months in a row, proving EU member states’ fear of migration crisis to be right.
