Carey Price to enter NHL/NHLPA player assistance program - Habs Eyes on the Prize

deweweko.blogspot.com

The NHL announced that Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price will be away from the team as he is entering the NHL and NHLPA’s player assistance program.

The goaltender will enter the program voluntarily. He had been away from the team with what the team said was a non-COVID related illness.

The program “assists players and their families with mental health, substance abuse and other matters.”

He was already missing the team’s training camp after off-season knee surgery that saw him unprotected for the NHL Expansion Draft so the team could protect Jake Allen instead.

Since then, the team has also claimed Samuel Montembeault off waivers with the expectation he will backup Allen at the NHL level leaving Michael McNiven and Cayden Primeau to play for the American Hockey League’s Laval Rocket.

General manager Marc Bergevin said that he found out about the news on Wednesday and he was caught off guard when he found out.

The Canadiens play their final pre-season game tonight against the Ottawa Senators.

Update, 11:10 AM:

Angela Price, Carey’s wife, posted a message on Instagram.

Update, 11:18 Marc Bergevin is talking to the media. Highlights will be posted and updated below.

The team announced prior to the conference that Bergevin will honour the final year of his contract and there will be no updates during the season.
