The United Kingdom passport holders have been urged to ensure they have the right documentation when travelling to the European Union and Schengen Zone countries, as new changes have been applied to passports and visas issued by both parties as they enter each other’s territories.

In addition, the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), alongside the British Embassy in Madrid, Spain, has urged people to carry a valid passport before leaving the country and make sure their passport is no more than ten years old and has at least three months left. Furthermore, the Embassy also warns passengers to be careful with their passport as applying and getting a new one could take a long time.

Britons travelling to the EU are advised to carry their passport at all times, which must have at least another three months of validity left. Moreover, UK citizens are reminded they cannot stay in the Schengen zone for more than 90 days, every 180 days, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The FCDO issued the advice on October 14 and reminded Britons travelling to any European countries, that the entry rules have been changed since January 1, 2021, as the UK officially left the EU.

As a result, the UK nationals can travel to the Schengen zone countries without a visa for 90 days in every 180 days if the person is travelling for tourism reasons, to visit family or friends, for business, for attending cultural or sports events, or for short-term studies or training.

According to the British Embassy in Madrid, waiting at border control will be different now that the UK is no longer part of the EU, and travellers should expect separate lanes from the EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens while queuing.

“Your passport is usually stamped on entry and exit unless you can demonstrate that you are a resident of Spain. You may also need to show: a return or onward ticket, enough money for your stay, proof of accommodation for your stay, for example, a hotel booking confirmation, proof of address if visiting your own property (for example, a second home), or an invitation from your host or proof of their address if staying with a third party, friends or family,” the Embassy reveals.

Further on, the Embassy advises visitors to be careful with their passports and reminds them to keep a physical or digital copy of the passport somewhere safe. If the traveller loses his/her passport, they’ll have to apply for an Emergency Travel Document online.

Moreover, the EU countries have also reminded their citizens to carry out a passport when entering the
British territory. More stringent entry rules will also apply to Europeans as Brexit has been officially finalized on January 1, 2021.

Estonia and Spain warned their travellers to keep a passport with themselves when they travel to the EU, as entering the country by only presenting an Identity Card will no longer be permitted.
