Edouard plays down Arsenal talk and would 'love to be a part' of 10 straight Celtic titles - Goal Posted: 13 Jun 2020 03:42 AM PDT Odsonne Edouard has played down talk of a potential summer move to Arsenal, insisting he would "love to be a part" a tenth straight title win for Celtic. Celtic were awarded the Scottish Premier League crown for a ninth successive year in May when the decision was taken to cancel all remaining fixtures due to the coronavirus pandemic. SpaceX SpaceX updated the website for its Starlink satellite internet project on Friday, as the company continues to move closer to its goal of offering direct-to-consumer broadband from space later this year. "Get updates on Starlink news and service availability in your area," the website reads, with a submission form for an email address and zip code. The form allows prospective customers to apply for updates and access to a public beta test of the Starlink service. The main page for SpaceX's Starlink website on June 12, 2020. SpaceX Starlink is the company's ambitious plan to build an interconnected network of about 12,000 small satellites, to beam high-speed internet to anywhere in the world. In addition to getting the satellites in orbit, SpaceX will need to build a vast system of ground stations and affordable terminals if it is going to connect consumers directly to its network. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell in 2018 said that "it will cost the company about $10 billion or more" to build the Starlink network. Since the beginning of 2019, SpaceX has raised nearly $1.7 billion in capital. Those who enter their email address and zip code on the Starlink website receive a confirmation email, saying the service "is designed to deliver high speed broadband internet to locations where access has been unreliable, expensive, or completely unavailable." The email said that a private beta test is planned for "later this summer, followed by public beta testing." SpaceX told the FCC in April that Starlink "will begin offering commercial service in the northern United States and southern Canada" before the end of this year, "and then will rapidly expand to near global coverage of the populated world in 2021." Abdul Rahman Baba: Where did it go wrong? - Goal.com Posted: 13 Jun 2020 02:42 AM PDT Five years after making a dream move to then-reigning Premier League champions Chelsea in 2015, Abdul Rahman Baba is nearing the end of a third loan spell away from the club with La Liga outfit Real Mallorca. With the left-back's year-long spell ending soon and having signed a five-year deal with the Blues when he joined, so is his time at Stamford Bridge. With the Ghanaian now way down the pecking order at the 2019 Europa League winners, chances of a contract extension are remote, and Baba is edging ever closer to the exit in West London. It's been an unfortunate turn of events for the former Augsburg man who was highly rated at the time he switched to the Premier League from the Bundesliga. He won an incredible 83 percent of his tackles in his only year in the German top flight and was described as an all-action full-back capable of influencing games at both ends of the pitch, per The Telegraph. Indeed, the West African was primed to rival Chelsea's title-winning left-back at the time, Cesar Azpilicueta, and succeed where the overly attacking Filipe Luis failed. The Brazilian wideman returned to Atletico Madrid only a year after leaving Diego Simeone's men, as he was unable to truly execute Jose Mourinho's instructions. Five years down the line, it's safe to say those Baba expectations were never matched, let alone exceeded. One could mitigate for his failure at the Bridge, too: in hindsight, leaving the Bundesliga too early was a bad call, the upheaval of 2015/16 in West London didn't help and, of course, a series of career-altering injuries that have crippled his development in the last three years. The nature of Baba Rahman's decline is underlined by how he's not even in the conversation to become Chelsea's next left-back under current boss Frank Lampard. The five-time Premier League champions are chasing a new left-back this summer, with Leicester City's Ben Chilwell publicly the top target, while Ajax's Nicolas Tagliafico and Porto's Alex Telles are reportedly backup options. Had their on-loan Mallorca full-back not stalled spectacularly in recent seasons, this could have been his time to finally become the club's undisputed left-back with the Blues' legend having reservations over Marcos Alonso, who is naturally a wing-back, and Emerson, who has struggled to impress at Stamford Bridge. For the Chelsea loanee, it hasn't just rained but it's poured too, with an unceasing spate of layoffs plaguing him since a meniscus rupture at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. Even though the ex-Asante Kotoko defender was on his first loan at the time with Schalke, that setback began his fall in the Stamford Bridge pecking order, as then-head coach Antonio Conte already had reservations about the full-back's natural inclination to go forward. In fairness, this seems odd, in hindsight given the Italian eventually switched to a 3-4-3 with Alonso on the left and Victor Moses, a converted winger, at right wing-back. However, that injury suffered at Afcon 2017 meant Baba wasn't considered for a return to Conte's side to challenge the former Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland full-back. His luck took a turn for the worse when, in September 2017, another long-term injury struck, ruling him out for the rest of the season. The side from Gelsenkirchen had renewed his loan deal for the campaign but he only featured in their final day encounter with Eintracht Frankfurt, coming on in the last 33 minutes. The full-back's fitness seemed to hold for another year or so, despite falling out of favour with the Royal Blues. The German outfit cut short his loan spell in January last year, which led to another spell away from London at Stade Reims in Ligue 1. Baba featured in 11 of a possible 16 league games, starting all of those games and completing 90 minutes unscathed on 10 occasions. He signed off with a remarkable performance against dominant champions Paris Saint-Germain, scoring and assisting as Reims stunned Thomas Tuchel's side 3-1 in gameweek 38. Indeed, it seemed like the Ghanaian was back on track...but misfortune struck early on in his current loan spell at Mallorca. The defender picked up a serious knee injury in Los Bermellones' 4-2 defeat by Getafe in September, which has restricted him to just two La Liga appearances this season. It looked like the 25-year-old wouldn't play again this season, but the coronavirus pandemic which put a halt to football across Europe has given him a chance of featuring before the expiration of the year-long loan. The relegation-threatened side host leaders Barcelona on Saturday seeking to claim a huge scalp and continue a run of form that saw them win two in four pre-pandemic. In short, the familiarity of surroundings can also give home team players a practical advantage for spatial awareness. This anecdote speaks to a far broader belief that football fans assume around the notion of home advantage. However, all the variables that go into defining such an advantage are harder to get a handle on - especially when matches move behind closed doors, as they have during the pandemic. How important is travel distance to football teams?Arsenal were widely mocked for taking a 14-minute flight to Norwich in 2015, but manager Arsene Wenger knew low travel times on matchday helped to gain a slight edge on opponents. Distance travelled by the away team is a key factor that affects home advantage. Clearly, there's less home advantage for, say, a derby match where the away team wake up in their own beds and don't travel very far. On the opposite end of the spectrum is a European away trip to Azerbaijan, where other travel-related variables like extreme pitch conditions, weather, or local diet are less of a burden to the home team who are conditioned to these localised phenomena. European teams who play on islands tend to be strong home teams and poor travellers – such as Mallorca, Palermo, Cagliari, Bastia, and Maritimo – although this doesn't impact the Premier League. Some global leagues minimise travel bias for home teams. In Japan, matchday commutes are relatively short between major cities as transportation options, such as bullet trains, are efficient. Meanwhile, the biggest away journey in the world is in the Russian league, and befalls Baltika Kaliningrad and Luch Vladivostock: a 13,000-mile round-trip. Concern is growing of a second wave of the pandemic, which has infected more than 7.66 million people worldwide and killed more than 420,000, even in many countries that seemed to have curbed its spread. The virus was first reported at a seafood market in Wuhan, the capital of central China's Hubei province, in December. Chu Junwei, an official of Beijing's southwestern Fengtai district, told a briefing on Saturday that the district was in "wartime emergency mode". Throat swabs from 45 people, out of 517 tested at the district's Xinfadi wholesale market, had tested positive for the new coronavirus, though none of them showed symptoms of COVID-19, Chu said. A city spokesman told the briefing that all six COVID-19 patients confirmed in Beijing on Friday had visited the Xinfadi market. The capital will suspend sports events and inter-provincial tourism effective immediately, he said. One person at an agricultural market in the city's northwestern Haidian district also tested positive for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 without showing symptoms, Chu said. As part of measures to curb the spread of the virus, Fengtai district said it had locked down 11 neighbourhoods in the vicinity of the market. Authorities closed the Xinfadi market at 3 a.m. on Saturday (1900 GMT on Friday), after two men working at a meat research centre who had recently visited the market were reported on Friday to have been infected. It was not immediately clear how the men had been infected. "Preliminary judgment suggests these cases may have come into contact with a contaminated environment in the market, or were infected after being in contact with infected people. We cannot rule out subsequent cases in the future," said Pang Xinghuo, an official at the Beijing Center for Disease Control. Beijing authorities had earlier halted beef and mutton trading at the Xinfadi market, alongside closures at other wholesale markets around the city. Authorities fully encased the statue of Britain's wartime leader in the city's Parliament Square less than a week after it was defaced during a protest against the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The total shrouding of the Churchill statue quickly drew rebuke from U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who called it "absurd and shameful that this national monument should today be at risk of attack by violent protestors." "The statue of Winston Churchill in Parliament Square is a permanent reminder of his achievement in saving this country – and the whole of Europe – from a fascist and racist tyranny," Johnson tweeted on Friday. The city also plans to protect central London's Cenotaph War Memorial and a statue of Nelson Mandela. A Black Lives Matter protest that had been planned for Saturday was canceled, as The Guardian reported, over safety concerns because of far-right counterdemonstrations planned for the same time. Posted: 12 Jun 2020 07:47 PM PDT A woman shown accosting an Asian American woman who was exercising in a Torrance park this week is a 56-year-old woman from Long Beach, police said Friday. Video of the woman, identified by Torrance police as Lena Hernandez, is shown in a video that has since gone viral telling a woman in the park to "Go back to whatever (expletive) Asian country you belong in." Hernandez appears to be the woman in another video showing a man being similarly accosted. "You need to go home," the woman tells the man in the video. Police said at a press conference Friday that the woman is also suspected of assaulting another woman in October in a shopping mall. Hundreds of people gathered at Torrance's Wilson Park on Crenshaw Boulevard, where the two recent incidents occurred, wearing black clothing and exercising in support of the woman who was accosted. Participants in Friday morning's demonstration at Wilson Park said they wanted to show that the community rejects the woman's words and actions. Johnson on statues row: We cannot try to edit or censor our past - South Wales Guardian Posted: 12 Jun 2020 07:08 PM PDT Boris Johnson has said it is "absurd and shameful" that the statue of Sir Winston Churchill in Parliament Square was at risk of attack from anti-racism protesters. Speaking after the memorial was boarded up to protect it ahead of more planned weekend demonstrations, the Prime Minister said on Twitter: "We cannot now try to edit or censor our past." In later comments, Mr Johnson warned people to stay away from future Black Lives Matter demonstrations, predicting they would "end in deliberate and calculated violence". A protective box was placed around the statue of the former premier, who led Britain during the Second World War struggle against the Nazis, after it was targeted during anti-racism protests last weekend. It was vandalised with the words "Was a racist", while the Cenotaph, which has also now been protected with hoarding, was also targeted. The protests, sparked by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in the US, saw clashes between protesters and police in London, while in Bristol a statue of Edward Colston was pulled down and dumped in the harbour. Mr Johnson said: "The statue of Winston Churchill in Parliament Square is a permanent reminder of his achievement in saving this country – and the whole of Europe – from a fascist and racist tyranny. "It is absurd and shameful that this national monument should today be at risk of attack by violent protesters. "Yes, he sometimes expressed opinions that were and are unacceptable to us today, but he was a hero, and he fully deserves his memorial." The Prime Minister voiced his opposition to the decision by a host of local authorities to remove a string of monuments and statues as the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement continues to be felt across the country. The Conservative Party leader said to take statues down would "be to lie about our history". Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals in London announced they will remove two statues of their namesakes from public view due to their links to the slave trade. Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council has delayed plans to temporarily remove a statue of Scouts founder Robert Baden-Powell after angry residents vowed to fight to protect it. The council had originally said it would move the statue from Poole Quay on Thursday over concerns it was on a target list compiled by anti-racism activists due to his associations with the Nazis and the Hitler Youth programme, as well as his actions in the military. The sculpture features on a "topple the racists" website which lists more than 60 statues and memorials across the UK which they argue should be taken down, because they "celebrate slavery and racism". But Mr Johnson, in a series of social media posts, said: "We cannot pretend to have a different history. "Those statues teach us about our past, with all its faults. "To tear them down would be to lie about our history, and impoverish the education of generations to come." The PM, in an interview with broadcasters, also addressed the ongoing anti-racism demonstrations, arguing the protests had been "hijacked" by a "growing minority" and were being used "as a pretext to attack the police, to cause violence and to cause damage to public property". He added: "Whatever our feelings about the cause, we should not support a demonstration that is, in all probability looking at what has happened before, going to end in deliberate and calculated violence." More than 130 people have been arrested as over 155,000 people across the UK took part in almost 200 demonstrations, according to the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC). A total of 62 police officers have been injured in the protests triggered by the death of Mr Floyd. The PM's remarks come as reports in the Times suggested violent protesters could be jailed within 24 hours after Justice Secretary Robert Buckland and Home Secretary Priti Patel drew up plans based on the response to the 2011 London riots. Metropolitan Police Commander Bas Javid, a Bristolian and brother of former chancellor Sajid Javid, promised a "robust" response to any disorder at protests over the coming days. Mr Javid reminded would-be demonstrators that gatherings in groups larger than six were "unlawful" due to Covid-19 restrictions. Meanwhile, Black Lives Matter campaigners have unveiled a billboard on Westminster Bridge Road in central London, near to Parliament, highlighting the plight of black people in the UK. Forming the words "I can't breathe" – uttered by Mr Floyd as he choked – the poster lists more than 3,000 names of people who have died in police custody, prisons, immigration detention centres and in racist attacks in the UK, as well as those who have died with coronavirus and the Grenfell Tower fire. The display was put up after organisers cancelled an anti-racism protest in London's Hyde Park on Saturday over fears it would be hijacked by far-right groups. A similar protest is still expected to go ahead on Friday but London Mayor Sadiq Khan has pleaded with the public to stay at home.
