Rare 'ring of fire' solar eclipse: How and when to watch this weekend - CNET

Posted: 21 Jun 2020 12:08 AM PDT

Photographer Kristen M Caldon captured this annular solar eclipse sequence at the Grand Canyon National Park in 2012.

The first of two solar eclipses for 2020 will turn the sun into a glowing "ring of fire" on June 21 (or June 20 depending on your location). People situated along a narrow band of the world will have the opportunity to see the rare eclipse firsthand.

An annular solar eclipse happens when the moon is too far away from us to completely hide the sun, leaving a circle of brightness around the moon. That is how it gets the poetic "ring of fire" nickname.

The full annular eclipse will be visible from parts of Africa and Asia. "A narrow stripe from Africa to the Pacific Ocean will see the Moon in front of the Sun (blocking 99.4% of the Sun at its peak in northern India) such that only a bright ring is visible," NASA said in a skywatching update for June

Time and Date lets you dial in details for your area, and tells you whether you're in line for the full eclipse, a partial eclipse or no eclipse at all. A NASA website also shows the eclipse path on an interactive map and lets you zoom in to find a viewing location.

Even if you're not in the right geographic spot to catch the eclipse in person, you may still be in luck thanks to the Virtual Telescope Project, which livestreams notable celestial events. Eclipse fans in the US will need to stay up late. The Virtual Telescope Project will kick off coverage at 10:30 p.m. PT on Saturday night.

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan will offer a Japanese-language livestream with its view of a partial eclipse starting at 11:45 p.m. PT on Saturday.

This won't be the only eclipse of the year. A total solar eclipse is on tap for Dec. 14 for viewers in parts of South America.

Watching online isn't the same as being there, but it's still an opportunity to contemplate the wonders of the sun and the moon, and our place in the solar system.

‘They’ve come to blows, will help them’: Trump on India-China border tension - The Indian Express

'They've come to blows, will help them': Trump on India China tensions The United states is talking to both India and China to help them resolve their ongoing border tensions, President Donald Trump said on Saturday.

The United states is talking to both India and China to help them resolve their ongoing border tensions, President Donald Trump said on Saturday.

"It's a very tough situation. We're talking to India. We're talking to China. They've got a big problem there," Trump told reporters at the White House before boarding Marine 1 on his way to his first post-COVID19 election rally in Oklahoma.

"They've come to blows, and we'll see what happens. We'll try and help them out," Trump said when asked about his assessment of the situation between India and China.

Over the past few days, the entire Trump Administration has rallied behind India against the illegitimate incursions of the Chinese Army into the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh. Follow India-China border dispute LIVE updates

As many as 20 Indian soldiers achieved martyrdom in fierce clashes against Chinese intruders into Galwan Valley in Ladakh early this week. Indians, according to US intelligence sources, killed more than 35 Chinese soldiers during the skirmish.

The United States has accused China of escalating border tension with India and other neighbours by trying to take benefit of these countries busy fighting coronavirus pandemic.

"The PLA (People's Liberation Army) has escalated border tensions with India, the world's most populous democracy. It's militarizing the South China Sea and illegally claiming more territory there, threatening vital sea lanes," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, in a major speech on China a day earlier.

In his virtual address on 'Europe and the China Challenge' during the 2020 Copenhagen Democracy Summit on Friday, Pompeo described the ruling Chinese Communist Party as a 'rogue actor.'

Early this week, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said the president is aware of the situation and the US is monitoring the situation between Indian and Chinese forces along the line of actual control in Eastern Ladakh.

During a phone call on June 2nd that Trump had with Prime Minister Modi, they did discuss the situation on the Indo-China border, McEnany said.

"Trump and Modi have a terrific relationship and trust between them," Al Mason, co-chair of the Trump Victory Indian American Finance Committee said, adding that the statements coming from the White House, the State Department and the US Embassy in New Delhi is reflective of this.

Coming out in support of India, Texas Congressman Lance Gooden said that China cannot be trusted.

"As more news comes out about the deadly conflict between China and India, once again CHINA appears to be an aggressive bad actor," the Republican Congressman said.

"The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) cannot be taken at their word, EVER," Gooden said in a tweet.

On the Senate floor, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that "on land, for the sake of grabbing territory, the PLA appears to have instigated the most violent clash between China and India since those nations went to war in 1962".

"Needless to say, the rest of the world has watched with grave concern this violent exchange between two nuclear states. We are encouraging de-escalation and hoping for peace," McConnell said.

Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs David Stilwell earlier said that this Chinese activity is similar to activity the world has seen in the past on border disputes with the Peoples Republic of China.

"I would point you to those – I think it was 2015 when Xi Jinping traveled to India the first time," he said.

"The PLA (People's Liberation Army) invaded this contested area deeper and longer, with more people, than ever before historically. Whether that was a negotiating tactic or just a punch in the nose to demonstrate their superiority, I don't know," he told reporters early this week.

"But then we saw the Doklam issue down near Bhutan, where we saw similar concerns. I wish I knew. Again, we don't have a lot of visibility and we don't have a lot of open dialogue with our Chinese counterparts, and honestly I'd like to see more of that if we can," Stillwell said.

US experts feel that the latest Chinese behavior will swing India towards China.

"Even before the latest flareup, a majority of Indian strategists saw Chinese assertiveness as India's biggest foreign-policy challenge. This has resulted in an unspoken but unmistakable swing toward the US," Jeff Smith from The Heritage Foundation think tank said.

"The bullying of US partners and allies needs to come at a cost," Smith said in a tweet.

'I feel like an alien!' - Klopp slams England's response to the coronavirus - Goal

Posted: 20 Jun 2020 11:42 PM PDT

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has criticised England's handling of the coronavirus crisis, revealing he feels like an alien for continuing to take it seriously.

Despite seeing how hard the pandemic hit Italy and Spain, the United Kingdom struggled to prepare for the virus with over 300,000 confirmed cases and 42,000 deaths to date.

During its peak, there were fears the Premier League season would be abandoned completely with Klopp himself conceding he became fully aware of that possibility

But despite those sporting concerns, Klopp has stressed his real focus has remained on matters off the pitch as he noted the major difference in how England and Germany have dealt with the coronavirus.

"I was not worried for one second that the government could cost us the title because I was worried about the numbers who were dying – and I'm still worried," Klopp said.

"I didn't vote for this government. This government was the choice of other people. And the problem I had was that I got the news from England and the news from Germany. If aliens looked at us both from the outside, they would think we came from two different planets.

"From a personal point of view, I don't understand why we started wearing face masks in closed areas on June 15 when five or six weeks ago all the other countries were doing it.

"You can argue about whether it makes sense to wear them, but all countries who started wearing face masks earlier have smaller casualty numbers than here in England. That's the truth.

"When I see the numbers here in England and then in Germany, I think. Look, it's not perfect in Germany, people have died and have been ill. But, in terms of living your life, it is completely different.

"If you want to enter a shop in Germany, but don't wear a face mask, then you aren't allowed in. With a face mask, you can go in all the shops you want. You can go to the hairdresser, wherever.

"They wear a face mask, you wear a face mask, and sometimes the people in the shop will have even more protection like a screen.

Article continues below

"When I go to the petrol station in England, I am the only one wearing a face mask and I'm the only one with gloves – I feel like an alien. I will not stop doing that until someone tells me it's over.

"But inside the club, we are safe. We are tested twice a week and it is a safe environment."

Liverpool return to Premier League action against Everton on Sunday, needing just two wins to wrap up the league title.

Solar eclipse 2020: See June's annular eclipse on Sunday - CNN

Posted: 20 Jun 2020 11:08 PM PDT

A satellite captured a powerful hurricane and a solar eclipse at the same time
"Annular eclipses are similar to total eclipses in that the moon, Earth and sun are aligned so that the moon moves directly in front of the Sun as viewed from Earth," said Alex Young, associate director for science in the heliophysics science division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
"But a total eclipse does not happen, that is the moon does not completely block out the visible disk of the sun because the moon is farther away and so its apparent size in the sky is [slightly] smaller than the sun. This means that a tiny ring of annulus of the solar disk is visible around the moon."
Solar eclipses occur about two weeks before or after a lunar eclipse, Young said. There was a lunar eclipse on June 5 and the next one occurs on July 5.

Where to see it

The annular eclipse will begin at 12:47 a.m. ET (4:47 UTC) on June 21 and cross a skinny path that starts at sunrise in Africa and eventually moves across to China before ending at sunset over the Pacific Ocean. It will peak at 2:40 a.m. ET (6:40 UTC) and end around 4:32 a.m. ET (8:32 UTC).
The partial eclipse will begin at 11:45 p.m. ET (3:45 UTC) on June 20 and end at 5:34 a.m. ET (9:34 UTC) on June 21.
Check TimeandDate.com for more specific timing in your area.
Stunning photos of the solar eclipse over South America
It will be visible over central Africa, the southern Arabian Peninsula, Pakistan, Northern India and South Central China, Young said. A partial eclipse will be seen over most of Asia, Africa, South and East Europe, northern Australia and parts of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, he added.
And of course, this is weather permitting, so hopefully the skies will be clear.
The entire eclipse will last about 3.75 hours, but the duration as it passes over individual locations will equal to around a minute and a half. During the peak, that will actually shorten to just over 30 seconds.
If you want to watch the annular eclipse but live outside of the viewing area, The Virtual Telescope Project will share a live view.

How to watch

Although this isn't a total solar eclipse, you still need to watch the eclipse using safety measures.
"Because the Sun is so incredibly bright, it is still too bright to look at with unprotected eyes," Young said. "You need safe solar viewing glasses or special filters for use with telescopes or binoculars."
Any glimpse of the sun's brightness is not only uncomfortable — it's dangerous. Looking directly at the powerful brightness of the sun can cause damage to the retina, the light-sensitive part of the eye. Even the smallest amount of exposure can cause blurry vision or temporary blindness. The problem is, you won't know whether it's temporary at first.
Wolf moon eclipse kicks off the first of 13 full moons in 2020
Whether you use the cardboard eclipse glasses or a handheld card with a single rectangular view, the most important feature is the filter. Make sure your eclipse glasses meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. Eclipse glasses can be worn over regular eyeglasses.
To test for safety, the only thing you can see through a safe solar filter is the sun itself. If you look through and the sun is too bright, out of focus or surrounded by a murky haze, or if you can see things like ordinary household lights, the glasses aren't safe.
If you're tempted to reuse eclipse glasses that are three years or older, they were made before the international safety standard was in place and come with a warning that says you can't look through them for more than three minutes at a time. These should be discarded, according to the American Astronomical Society.

Safety first

If you plan on watching the eclipse through a camera, a telescope or binoculars, buy a solar filter to place on the end of the lens. But do not wear eclipse glasses while looking through any of these. The concentrated light will go right through the filters and cause injury to your eyes.
Here are safety tips to remember, according to the American Astronomical Society:
  • Always inspect your solar filter before use; if it's scratched, punctured, torn or otherwise damaged, discard it. Read and follow any instructions printed on or packaged with the filter.
  • Always supervise children using solar filters.
  • If you normally wear eyeglasses, keep them on. Put your eclipse glasses on over them, or hold your handheld viewer in front of them.
  • Stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer before looking up at the bright sun. After looking at the sun, turn away and remove your filter; do not remove it while looking at the sun.
  • Do not look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars or other optical device.
  • Similarly, do not look at the sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewer; the concentrated solar rays could damage the filter and enter your eyes, causing serious injury.
  • Seek expert advice from an astronomer before using a solar filter with a camera, telescope, binoculars or any other optical device; note that solar filters must be attached to the front of any telescope, binoculars, camera lens or other optics.

LAC remains on edge, fear of fresh flare-ups, calls to de-escalate - The Indian Express

Posted: 20 Jun 2020 10:08 PM PDT

Written by Sushant Singh | New Delhi | Updated: June 21, 2020 6:55:39 am

The mood on the Line of Actual Control has changed dramatically ever since the death of 20 Indian soldiers in clashes with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley on the night of June 15. So tense is the situation that there is a possibility it could deteriorate rapidly should there be another faceoff any time soon. Follow India-China border dispute LIVE updates

The Galwan incident – the first deaths on the Sino-Indian border in 45 years, and the most serious breakdown of the 1993 understanding between the two nuclear-armed neighbours who also agreed not to use firearms along their large and often undefined border – has stalled the process of disengagement by the two sides in Ladakh.

More worryingly, the circumstances of the death of the 20 soldiers have increased chances of an escalation into a military conflict on the LAC since adherence to old protocols and SOPs will now be very hard to enforce.

"If de-escalation does not take place fast, the chances of more such clashes taking place will increase. When you have troops eyeball-to-eyeball, there is a lot of tension, anger, and any small incident can flare up," former Army Chief General VP Malik told The Indian Express.

Read | Delhi to Beijing, via Ladakh: Accusations, and counters

At the time of the clashes on June 15, the soldiers were armed – and with ammunition, as per Army officers – but did not open fire in accordance with the established practice on the LAC, even as their Commanding Officer and 19 others were bludgeoned to death. The decision to not open fire has come under heavy criticism, especially from military veterans, and is unlikely to be repeated if another clash takes place.

And the chances of another clash are high as troops remain deployed in proximity – eyeball to eyeball – at multiple locations along the LAC. This risk is the highest at Pangong Tso, where latest satellite imagery shows newly constructed Chinese outposts and forward positions, that sit exactly on the ridgeline separating the two forces.

The current round of tensions started from Pangong Tso, where there was a major brawl between the two sides on the night of May 5/6, leaving more than 70 Indian soldiers injured. Brawls between patrols have been common even earlier in that area, because of the disputed nature of the LAC. But in the current environment of high tension and anger, the next brawl is unlikely to remain limited to fisticuffs, pushing and jostling, or fighting with sticks and stones.

Read | Army's protective gear has Made in China link, Niti member says relook

The rules of engagement have never prohibited opening of fire if the lives of soldiers are at stake, and that message has gone home to all soldiers and commanders at a very high cost this week.

Once initiated, even inadvertently, military engagements take a life of their own. The 1967 Nathu La conflict between India and China started with pushing and jostling, before a Chinese soldier opened fire and shot dead the Indian Commanding Officer during an eyeball-to-eyeball situation. Soon, it escalated to use of medium artillery and the Chinese even threatened to bring in fighter jets to bomb Indian positions.

Read | Analysts say India has geographical advantage in air power

In Nathu La, the faceoff was at a single location and both sides had limited weaponry at their disposal. Now, the tensions are high across the border and soldiers are in a standoff situation at many places in Ladakh itself. The availability of modern weaponry and support provided by the air force is likely to make any escalation much worse than Nathu La, where 88 Indian soldiers lost their lives and Chinese casualties totalled 340.

In Ladakh, there have been no talks at the military level since Thursday.

Read | Ex-IAF chief: Prudent option is to de-escalate situation diplomatically

"Military-level talks at various levels are unlikely to yield any perceptible results. An amicable resolution is now possible only through diplomatic and political channels," former Army Chief General Bikram Singh said.

While commanders on the ground can reinforce adherence to existing protocols, procedures, and SOPs in meetings with their Chinese counterparts, that is unlikely to provide an answer to this challenge after the June 15 incident. The solution lies in early disengagement and de-escalation at the LAC by both armies, which can only be achieved at a political level.

'Made in India, not China:' Boycott campaign gathers steam after border clash - AlKhaleej Today

Posted: 20 Jun 2020 09:08 PM PDT

Thank you for reading the news about 'Made in India, not China:' Boycott campaign gathers steam after border clash and now with the details

Jeddah - Yasmine El Tohamy - NEW DELHI: Harinder Bhati's anger knows no bounds when he starts talking about China.

Ever since Monday's news reports — of 20 Indian soldiers dying in a clash with China along the disputed Himalayan border in Ladakh — Bhati has been leading a vigorous "boycott China campaign."

On Thursday, he organized a protest in Greater Noida, a suburb of New Delhi, where the group called for boycotts of Chinese mobiles and urged traders not to sell Chinese goods.

"We are agitated over China's aggression and brutal killing of our soldiers," Bhati, a social activist, told Arab News on Saturday.

However, he seemed unaware that the mobile phones used by him and other protesters in the group were either produced by China or have Chinese components in them.

"It doesn't matter," he said, adding that sooner or later, "India will start producing its own mobiles."

"Is India being fed by China? India will match Chinese technological know-how sooner or later. We will sacrifice some of our indulgences to teach China a lesson," he said.

It's a thought and emotion echoed by Vivek Yadav of Jabalpur in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Under the banner of the People's Resistance Group, Yadav organized a "boycott China" demonstration in Jabalpur on Thursday and asked all sections of society "to live without Chinese products," reasoning that Indian money was "helping China grow."

"China is getting stronger and stronger with billions of dollars of Indian money that is going into their economy. This is affecting our economy and our local industry. This must stop now," Yadav told Arab News.

"A day will come when China will start dictating terms to the Indian economy, and we would be at the beck and call of the Chinese economy," he said.

After a month of tension along the disputed border in Ladakh, a deadly clash broke out between the two Asian giants, resulting in the loss of 20 Indian soldiers.

It was a rare escalation of tensions that had not taken place since 1975.

News of the soldiers' deaths created a wave of emotion across the country, leading to protests, with several calling for a total boycott of Chinese products.

Under pressure, the government seems to be rethinking its deals with China, with state-run Indian Railways reportedly scrapping a $61.8 million contract with a Chinese firm.

Meanwhile, the government-owned Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd terminated a tender given to a China-based company.

However, a look at the economic relations between the two nations tells a different story, with economists and seasoned politicians warning against a knee-jerk reaction.

China has deep investments in the Indian economy — accounting for $5.5 billion until last year — and New Delhi trades more with Beijing than vice versa.

Additionally, China's smartphone companies hold a share of about 75 percent of the Indian market.

Bilateral trade is also in favor of China, with Beijing's exports amounting to $57.86 billion in 2019 compared to imports that stood at $16.32 billion.

This means India has a trade deficit of more than $50 billion.

"We have to tone down this rhetoric of nationalism which tends to obliterate other relevant issues," a senior leader of the opposition Congress party and the former finance minister, P. Chidambaram, told the media on Saturday.

"I support self-reliance, but that does not mean we should decouple with the rest of the world. As far as trade relations are concerned, India must be part of the global supply chain. If you boycott China's goods, what part of China's trade with India is part of the world trade? It's a fraction. So boycotting Chinese goods will not hurt the Chinese economy but may or may not hurt Indian consumers," he said.

Economists feel the boycott campaign is impractical and not rooted in reality.

"If we boycott, China is not going to be hurt very much, but we will be affected because we are importing lots of manufactured products from them," economist Arun Kumar of New Delhi-based Jawaharlal Nehru University told Arab News, adding that India needed to have a "long-term plan" to deal with the consequences.

"If India wants to match up to China, it will have to have a long-term plan and invest heavily in education, technology, skill development. New Delhi will have to strengthen its bargaining power to put pressure on Beijing. So a calibrated strategy needs to be formulated," Kumar said.

Delhi-based political analyst Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay agrees, wondering how her "country can run on this knee-jerk reaction."

"The boycott campaign will not serve any purpose. We are so dependent on China for our economy," Mukhopadhyay told Arab News.

Premier League win can take some Liverpool players to the next level - Van Dijk - Goal

Posted: 20 Jun 2020 08:42 PM PDT

Virgil van Dijk believes winning the Premier League could take some Liverpool players to the next level as he warned the club are desperate to carry good momentum into next season.

The Reds return to action on Sunday against Everton and need just two more wins to wrap up the league title after an almost perfect campaign.

Jurgen Klopp's side have dropped just four points in the league this season and boast the best defence in the competition.

While Liverpool did win the Champions League last year, Van Dijk believes lifting the Premier League title is exactly what some players need to get even better.

"We have not won the title yet. We have not won anything yet. But the aim is to start next season in the same fashion," Van Dijk was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail

"We can be a team that can keep progressing. We have players who can progress and make big steps in their development. Winning the league would be a big experience that could take them to the next level.

"We can achieve that first and foremost this season and then we will see what can happen next season. If we win the title this season, we will try to retain it. That's what we are aiming for but everyone knows how difficult it is to retain the title, especially in England and we are not there this season yet. We tried to retain our Champions League title and it wasn't possible. It's very difficult.

"We will try to focus on the nine games we have left but we hope to set the pace for the rest of next season with the title behind our name and defend the title as well."

The Reds looming triumph will be bitter sweet to some extent with no fans allowed to attend matches, but Van Dijk stressed they must accept the situation as he admitted he was unsure at one point whether the season would be completed.

"I know how long our fans have been waiting for this. But unfortunately it's something we all have to deal with that they won't be able to be there if it happens," he said.

"We've seen clubs winning cups already in other countries and everybody is getting on with it. For me, winning the Premier League and lifting that trophy would be a dream come true. We were very close last year and we are very close this year, much closer than we were last year. We have nine games to go and we will try to win all of them. That's our goal.

Article continues below

"The most important thing in life is health and we all had to deal with the suspension of the season and everyone had the feeling there would be a time when we finished the season.

"It was strange to stop so abruptly and being in the unknown. Not knowing when we will start again. Sometimes people were putting things in the media saying the league should be cancelled. You read these things because you have plenty of time to read when there is suddenly no football being played.

"I wasn't worried but being left in the dark, not knowing what was going to happen, personally I hate that. You ask questions to certain people who know what is happening behind the scenes and it was pretty clear there was no option at all to cancel the league. So you try to make sure you stay fit, do all the right things and make sure you are even more ready than before when the league resumes."

America is fighting a racial as well as a viral pandemic - MSR News Online

Posted: 20 Jun 2020 07:47 PM PDT

Paul Becker / Becker1999

Leadership Forum panelists foresee much hard work ahead

The COVID pandemic has disproportionally impacted Blacks more severely than any other segment of the U.S. population.

According to latest APM Research Lab data, one death in 1,625 Blacks (or 61.6 deaths per 100,000) has been recorded—higher than Whites (26.2 deaths), Asians (26.3 deaths), Latinos (28.2 deaths) and Native Americans (36.0 deaths). Also, the death rate among Blacks is higher by three times or more in six U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) reports that 20 percent of COVID cases are among persons age 30 to 39 and 19 percent for persons 20 to 29. This largely disputes earlier information that only older persons get infected, although the highest death rate of state virus-related deaths is among persons age 80 to 89 (34 percent), and 26 percent of persons age 90 to 99.

Of over 1,300 COVID deaths in Minnesota, under 10 percent of the total, are Blacks.

Despite the pandemic, many people are more concerned about long-existing systemic racism than their personal health, judging from over three weeks of protests and demonstrations since George Floyd's May 25 death in police custody.  At least 20 states have seen increases in COVID-19 confirmed cases, according to recent reports.

"We expect these numbers to increase in leaps and bounds," said Children's Minnesota Infectious Prevention Nurse Adriene Thornton. She was part of a June 10 African American Leadership Forum four-person video panel discussion on the coronavirus impact on the Black community.

Thornton is concerned that the protesters for the most part aren't practicing social distancing, which health officials strongly advise to help prevent spreading the virus. "We are still in the process of a pandemic," said Thornton. "You need something to cover your mouth and your nose, and maintain a six-foot distance," she stressed, adding that protesters should always have hand sanitizers and alcohol wipes with them. "You have to keep your hands clean."

The Floyd death "has affected us all," said Minnesota Community Care CEO Reuben Moore.  "This is very painful to me."

Valerie Castile, Philando Castile's mother, added, "What happened to Mr. Floyd was unacceptable." Her son was killed in 2016 at age 32 during a traffic stop; the policeman later was charged but acquitted in a jury trial. "You need to go to jail if you murder someone," she stated, adding the four former Minneapolis police officers treated Floyd "like a prized trophy."

It is important to help children understand what is happening as well as how to stay healthy, Hennepin County Therapist Zadok Nampala advised. "Our kids have a lot of questions in their mind," he said, urging parents to stay "on standby mode" for their children. "You have to have age-appropriate discussions with your child," said Nampala, reassuring them that they are safe and protected.

America is in "a racial pandemic" as well as a viral one, said Dr. Joi Lewis, who owns a local wellness business. "Our humanity is on the line, and they are killing us. This is not a movie.  This is real life."

"I'm hopeful as a Black woman and a single mother," said Thornton. "I don't know what to do to keep my kids safe. I am concerned [about COVID]."

"We have to do better as a civilization," said Castile, who since Philando's death has started a nonprofit foundation in her son's name. "My son was big on community and families," she said. "I have been working tirelessly" in meeting with families with slain family members. "It is a lot of work we have to do. It's all about giving back to the community."

The panelists all agreed that change is needed to address pre-COVID racial inequities.

"There is a lot of work to be done in the state of Minnesota," said Castile. "It's bad here."

"We have to work on system change," Moore said on corporations and other organizations. "You have to take a bold stand. We need to adopt anti-racism policies."

He also decried "liberal racism," calling it "very unique, so disguised and intelligent. You have to create a dialogue to have change."

"I'm excited about our young people," Thornton said. "I love the passion. Hopefully things will get better."

'It's sh*t that Bayern won' - Dortmund star Haaland unhappy to miss out on Bundesliga title - Goal

Posted: 20 Jun 2020 06:42 PM PDT

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland has made his feelings about Bayern Munich's title win pretty clear, saying it was "sh*t" that the Bavarian giants had become champions once again.

Hansi Flick's side sealed an eighth successive Bundesliga title with victory at Werder Bremen in midweek

Dortmund have now finished runners-up in five of those eight seasons, with Saturday's 2-0 win at third-placed RB Leipzig ensuring they secured second place once more.

Haaland continued his fine form in a Dortmund shirt with both goals to take his tally to 16 goals in 17 appearances since his January move from RB Salzburg. That proved little consolation to the Norwegian, though, who was not satisfied with finishing second.

"First of all it is of course sh*t that Bayern won," he told BT Sport after the final whistle. "But that is how it is now and we have to do our best out of it. And now we have secured second place, but we tried to get as close as we can on them."

Saturday's game was also notable as it featured a first Bundesliga start for Giovanni Reyna. The 17-year-old, son of former United States international Claudio Reyna, spent his youth career at New York City FC before joining Dortmund's academy in 2019 and has gone on to make a big impact at Signal Iduna Park.

The midfielder became the youngest American to feature in Bundesliga when he made his debut against Augsburg in January at the age of 17 years and 66 days, breaking the record previously held by Christian Pulisic.

He has since gone on to make 17 appearances for the club in all competitions. He certainly looked at home in the German top flight on his first start, displaying great vision to set up Haaland for his opening goal and earn the praise of his team-mate after the game.

"I have called him the American dream before and it's true," added Haaland. "He is 17-years-old and what he is doing on the pitch is amazing. He has a huge future in front of him."

Dortmund complete their 2019-20 Bundesliga season at home to Hoffenheim next Saturday.

From Cosmopolitan

Iconic celeb partnership Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt split up all the way back in 2016, and until now they've both remained pretty private on the topic. However, that seems to have changed as Angelina has opened up about the reasons behind their split in a rare interview with British Vogue.

Explaining the separation, Angelina, 45, revealed that she made the decision because she wanted to focus on the wellbeing of her family and children, saying, "I separated for the wellbeing of my family. I continue to focus on their healing."

She also opened up about the effect the rumours surrounding her split from Brad have had on their six children, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne. She added, "Some have taken advantage of my silence, and the children see lies about themselves in the media, but I remind them that they know their own truth and their own minds."

Angelina continued, "In fact, they are six very brave, very strong young people." And they certainly seem so to us.

The star has previously opened up about how her children helped her to find herself again, telling Harper's Bazaar, "My children know my true self, and they have helped me to find it again and to embrace it. They have been through a lot. I learn from their strength."

Photo credit: SOPA Images - Getty Images

She also revealed how her plans to move away from her US base were still dependent on Brad, explaining, "I would love to live abroad and will do so as soon as my children are 18. Right now I'm having to base where their father chooses to live."

We're glad that these two are still keeping it amicable.

After a pregame injury previously derailed his first Borussia Dortmund start, NYCFC product and US men's national team hopeful Giovanni Reyna appeared in the starting XI for Saturday's Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig.

Reyna fulfilled the trust from head coach Lucien Favre, assisting on Erling Haaland's opener in the 30th minute for the 1-0 lead. The 17-year-old attacking midfielder cushioned a pass centrally into the striker's path, and the Norwegian made no mistake from close range.

Reyna ultimately played 81 minutes before being subbed off for Leonardo Balerdi. After the match, Haaland offered praise for the young American:

Up to this point, Reyna had appeared in 13 Bundesliga matches for Dortmund. Each appearance came off the bench, with Reyna's longest stint being a 45 minute runout against Bayern Leverkusen in February. He had one goal and one assist for the club, with both coming in the Champions League or DFB-Pokal.

Reyna developed at NYCFC's academy before moving to Dortmund in July 2019. He's made 16 appearances with the US U-17 national team, including a key role at last fall's FIFA U-17 World Cup.

BlueAndGold - New York Defensive Lineman Is Fired Up About Notre Dame - Rivals.com

BlueAndGold - New York Defensive Lineman Is Fired Up About Notre Dame - Rivals.com

Queens (N.Y.) St. Francis Prep class of 2022 defensive lineman Kaleb Artis had a productive spring, earning offers from Boston College, Nebraska, Massachusetts, Notre Dame and West Virginia. In total, the 6-5, 260-pounder holds 11 scholarship offers.

"Everything was slow at first," Artis said. "There was a waiting period. I knew offers were going to come in eventually."

New York isn't exactly a hot bed for football recruiting. There are 13 prospects from the Empire State in the 2021 class who are ranked by Rivals, compared to 274 in Florida.

Notre Dame fans will remember running back Tirek Murphy from Middle Village (N.Y.) Christ The King High School in the 2020 class. The Irish were involved in Murphy's recruitment, but he ended up signing with Purdue.

"We produce here and will keep producing," Artis stated. "We've had some big-time players come out of here. I want to represent my state well. We play good ball here."

Artis' most recent offer came from Notre Dame May 18 while he was speaking with a pair of Irish coaches.

"I'm very happy about it," Artis said. "A Notre Dame offer is hard to get; they're a great school. My coach texted me and said that he had just got off the phone with Coach [Jeff] Quinn. They had a 30-minute conversation about me.

"Two or three days after that, my coach gave me Coach Quinn's number and told me that they wanted to get to know me on the phone. Coach [Mike] Elston was on the call, and we spoke too. They were both excited to speak to me. Coach Elston told me that they were offering me, and I was grateful.

"Notre Dame is big. I know they had a great season last year, and academically, they're a really good school. That's important."

Rivals lists Artis as a defensive tackle, and as a rising junior, it's plausible to believe that he'll continue to grow. Notre Dame has talked to him about playing all over the defensive line, and Artis is willing to play wherever.

"[Coach Elston] says he could see defensive end position or three technique," said Artis. "He could push me inside when they need a pass rush. I was happy to hear that."

Artis wants to visit as many schools as possible, but he's not able to do that right now with the NCAA enacting a dead period due to the coronavirus pandemic. The good thing for Artis is that he has plenty of time to get out and visit schools as a 2022 recruit.

"Every school that's offered me, we look into it — pictures online and learn things," Artis explained. "I do want to try and as many places as I can go to. I want to meet coaches face to face. I want to see what everything is about, including Notre Dame and Coach Elston. I want to go see those guys and their energy in person."
