| Posted: 22 Jun 2020 01:13 AM PDT Spooky season: Authorities investigating man selling durians online at Choa Chu Kang cemetery - AsiaOne  With a weighing scale, a timer, and some durians, a daring merchant has been hawking his wares online at spooky spots around Singapore. 29-year-old Elvin Xie set up shop before a row of tombstones in Choa Chu Kang cemetery on June 17, pulled his face mask to his chin, and called for bids on Mao Shan Wang durians over Facebook Live. He sold 10 durians for $600 that night, Lianhe Wanbao reported. The unusual location soon drew ire from netizens, with some commenting that it was a disrespectful act while others pointed out possible breaches of public health measures. The video, recorded during phase 1 of Singapore's reopening, has racked up over 58,000 views and led Xie to explore other haunted locations. Despite the negative comments online, he continued to auction durians at East Coast Park's Amber Beacon Tower on June 21. Now, the authorities are onto him. The National Environment Agency and Singapore Food Agency have said that they are looking into the incidents. A spokesman told the Chinese evening daily: "Members of the public cannot visit Choa Chu Kang cemetery from April 7 to June 18 unless they are attending funerals there." The temporary Covid-19 regulations require people to stay home unless they're out for essential activities such as work, as well as wearing masks whenever they step out of their homes. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images) After today's defeat against Chelsea brought yet more questions surrounding Villa's tactics and setup, I believe the manager needs to change his ways.Despite it being a narrow defeat, the game today showed Villa's lack of a plan when they are behind or chasing a game. One change in particular that I thought was questionable was bringing off Keinan Davis for Ally Samatta – a striker for a striker. In fairness to Dean Smith, Villa were leading at this point in the game, but Davis was still feeding off scraps and was totally isolated at times playing against Chelsea's centre backs on his own with no support. I think a more positive and beneficial move would have been to bring on Samatta to play with Davis, so there would be a little more help for Davis at the top end of the pitch, but that didn't happen and Chelsea scored 2 quick goals to win the game. A must-win for VillaMore from Aston VillaA must-win game against Newcastle now awaits Villa, who lie in 19th place and who are 1 point off West Ham in 17th. In order to get the win against a resolute and tightly packed Newcastle outfit, Villa needs to get more bodies at the top end of the pitch and I believe a two-man attack is the way to go. Smith has so far been stubborn in his belief that a 4-3-3 formation gets the best out of his squad, but it's clearly not working, and the lack of attacking prowess since the resumption of the Premier League only further backs up my argument. A scoreless game against Sheffield Utd and a scrappy goal from a set-piece today really doesn't point to a side who are doing everything right in attack. I think a 4-3-1-2 set up could be the way forward for Villa, with the creative spark of Jack Grealish playing in behind a front two in "the hole". It's apparent that Grealish's best position is in the centre of the pitch, where he can get on the ball and influence the game. The lack of wingers in this formation shouldn't be a concern as Villa aren't getting much output anyway from Anwar El-Ghazi, Trezeguet, or Grealish for that matter when he plays on the left-wing as he's currently doing. The risks of changing to this formation outweigh any potential downsides it may have, as Smith can't just wait for something to change. He needs results quickly and hopefully, Villa can take Newcastle by surprise, much as they did to Burnley on New Years Day when Villa switched to 3-4-3 and won the game. The character was introduced in the episode "The Tangible Affection Proof" as one of the comic book customers for that year's singles-only Valentine's Day event. Micucci played the jittery Lucy quite perfectly, and she effectively portrayed her other roles too, so it's interesting to speculate what Amy would've been like if Micucci had landed the part. Her impeccable comedic timing would have help her as a Big Bang Theory regular cast member — not to mention her musical talent, considering Sheldon's penchant for the "Soft Kitty" song. That said, since Micucci has yet to share the screen with Parsons, it's difficult to say what her dynamic with the actor would have been like. This is particularly important to the casting process because the chemistry between Amy and Sheldon ultimately determined how The Big Bang Theory moved forward with their romance. In the end, The Big Bang Theory made the right casting choice, picking Bialik to play Amy. Over the years, the character incrementally developed to cater to Sheldon's barely changing ways without looking like she's being railroaded which the actress portrayed effectively. The viewers' continued investment in the couple's final arc as they worked to win a Nobel Prize in Physics for their work on Super Asymmetry in the final season also backs this idea up. | Nintendo downshifts on mobile ambitions after Animal Crossing success - The Japan Times Posted: 21 Jun 2020 10:44 PM PDT Nintendo Co. is retreating from the $77 billion mobile gaming arena after disappointing results deflated once-lofty ambitions, ending a multiyear effort just as the market goes through an unprecedented boom sparked by the coronavirus. President Shuntaro Furukawa proclaimed two years ago that smartphone games would be a $1 billion business with growth potential, building on his predecessor's promise that Nintendo would release two to three mobile titles each year. That spurred hopes among investors that the gaming powerhouse could carve out a substantial slice of the market. In May, however, the president adopted a markedly different tune, saying "We are not necessarily looking to continue releasing many new applications for the mobile market." Nintendo's shares slid 4 percent the day after that remark. Close observers might have sensed Nintendo was growing disillusioned with the mobile realm even earlier. Its smartphone games project was born out of necessity to shore up the bottom line amid the Wii U's failure. Now, riding a surge in Switch popularity and investor confidence, the Kyoto-based company appears to have reassessed the mobile business and narrowed its focus to its own console ecosystem. In the period from February through May, when other studios were posting record earnings during the virus lockdowns, Sensor Tower data showed marquee Nintendo titles like Super Mario Run plummeting by double digits. At the same time, Nintendo's own Animal Crossing: New Horizons had just become the quintessential haven from virus anxiety, powering the Switch console to new heights of popularity and pushing the company's share price to a 12-year high last week. Mobile games are expected to make $77.2 billion this year, which would account for half of the overall video game industry's sales, according to research from Newzoo. But "since the release of Mario Kart Tour in fall 2019, Nintendo's mobile pipeline is empty," said Serkan Toto, a mobile games consultant in Tokyo. "In a sense, Nintendo's enormous success on console reduced the need and the pressure to put resources into mobile." Most of the top-ranked mobile games adopt a freemium model wherein playing is free but gamers are pushed to spend on upgrades or mighty weapons to advance. That approach is coming under scrutiny with regulators clamping down on exploitative freemium mechanics that force players to pay to win. In Japan especially, gacha — a lottery system where gamers pay in hopes of scoring rare loot — invited controversy because of its addictive aspects. Fearing that it would harm the brand equity of its franchises, Nintendo asked its mobile development partners not to force players to spend a lot in games, according to people at those companies, who asked not to be identified as the matter is private. A Nintendo spokesperson declined to comment. Nintendo has tested various revenue models for its smartphone games, including one-time purchases for Super Mario Run and subscriptions for Mario Kart Tour. Both apps have fallen short of market expectations in terms of revenue, according to Kazunori Ito of Morningstar Research. For the current fiscal year ending in March, Nintendo said it would focus on already-released mobile apps and doesn't foresee revenue from that business rising much. The company earned ¥51 billion from smartphone games and other licensing in fiscal 2019, up just 11 percent from the year-earlier period and still only half of the way to the objective that its president had once set. Nintendo hasn't announced what apps it will release next, but the chief of its mobile development partner, DeNA Co. President Isao Moriyasu, has said not to expect new apps from it until near the end of the current fiscal year. That suggests a long wait until Nintendo's next smartphone game. Ace Research Institute analyst Hideki Yasuda said that, in Japan especially, gacha remains the only lucrative business model in mobile games. But even if Nintendo were willing to go down that path, it would be unsuccessful, he added. "You need an active long-running franchise with hundreds of attractive characters to make a good gacha game and then you'd need to keep adding new characters each month to retain players," Yasuda said. "Fire Emblem is the only Nintendo franchise capable of doing that." Nintendo's peers offer clues as to why cracking the smartphone market isn't always straightforward. Square Enix Holdings Co., whose Dragon Quest Walk has grown into a huge hit, has taken another route to maximizing game revenue. The publisher monetizes its franchises by making them popular on high-definition home consoles first and then steering players to smartphone apps and having them spend money there — not just once, but repeatedly. It has so far released more than a dozen Dragon Quest mobile apps and more than three dozen Final Fantasy games for phones, showing the scale of investment required. Both franchises have legions of characters and by releasing multiple titles from each set of lore, the company prompts players to keep spending to obtain their favorite heroes for each game. Nintendo's Animal Crossing mobile app saw a 45 percent uptick in earnings as the Switch game was released, per Sensor Tower's data, but the company doesn't find the Square Enix model appealing. Unlike game studios who have to pay a platform fee whether on console or mobile, Nintendo has a strong incentive to focus all gamer spending on its own platform, where it doesn't have to share revenue. Its goal is to send customers from smartphones to consoles, not the other way around. Sony Corp.'s PlayStation unit has also struggled to penetrate the mobile gaming arena. It has a smartphone division called ForwardWorks Corp., which has released eight games mostly based on inactive PlayStation franchises that have failed to gain traction without cross-promotion. Nintendo's dimmed enthusiasm for smartphone games is driven not only by disappointing revenues and unsatisfying monetization options but also by the limitations of the platform. The company believes its franchises shine brightest when coupled with designed-by-Nintendo controllers and it's never been fully comfortable with the touchscreen-only interface of a phone. | Posted: 21 Jun 2020 06:47 PM PDT  FAR ROCKAWAY, Queens — Viral video appears to show an NYPD officer holding a man in a chokehold on the boardwalk in Far Rockaway. An NYPD officer involved in the arrest was suspended without pay Sunday night, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said. "While a full investigation is still underway, there is no question in my mind that this immediate action is necessary," he said. Mayor Bill de Blasio said it was the fastest he'd ever seen the NYPD discipline an officer. "This is how it needs to be," he said. Four officers were on top of the man and one officer had his arm wrapped around the man. The officer got up after another officer tapped him on the back and appeared to pull at the back of his shirt. Lori Zeno, the man's attorney, said she thinks her client would have been choked to death if the officer hadn't been stopped. "The officer who intervened to stop his colleague did exactly the right thing. I commend him," de Blasio said. "That is what we need to see from all our officers." After the video surfaced, an NYPD spokesperson said it was being taken "extremely seriously" and that there was an active investigation underway by the Internal Affairs Bureau. Police got a call for a man being disorderly on the boardwalk near Beach 113th Street on Sunday morning, officials said. Officers said he was acting erratically when they arrived and resisted when they tried to take him into custody. Body camera video from the NYPD shows a lengthy interaction between police and men on the boardwalk before the start of the viral arrest video. "Oh man, this is fun," an officer can be heard saying. The three pedestrians continue talking to police. "Touch any of my boys and you are dead," the man who was eventually put into an apparent chokehold said. One of the other pedestrians chastised the man, saying he doesn't disrespect police. About 10 minutes after the confrontation began, police took down the man who'd threatened him. It appears he may he have taken something from a recycling bin right beforehand. "Stop choking him! Stop choking him! Let him go," the other pedestrians screamed. After being put in an apparent chokehold, the man was walked to an NYPD vehicle where he told police has was bipolar. While still on the boardwalk, bystanders confronted police. "He grabbed something and squared off and was gonna hit my officer who's standing over there," an officer can be heard saying. "That's when everything changed. The minute I saw him flex on him, that's when he goes down because we don't get hurt." The man was treated at a local hospital, police said. Zeno said he was a visible wound on the back of this head. Charges against the man are pending, police said. It's not clear what the NYPD intends to charge him with, but the man's attorney said it's the suspended police officer who should be charged. "He's an idiot and he's a bad cop and he needs to go," Zeno said. "He needs to get fired and needs to get prosecuted." Mayoral spokesperson Freddi Goldstein called the video "very concerning." "We're glad the NYPD is immediately launching an investigation to get to the bottom of what happened," she said. Just days ago amid ongoing protests over police brutality, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed several police accountability measures into law, including a ban on police chokeholds. The NYPD banned chokeholds in the 1990s. | Car being pursued by Swansea police officer hits mobile home after crash - swlexledger.com Posted: 21 Jun 2020 06:44 PM PDT  Swansea, SC (Paul Kirby) – A man has been arrested and charged with multiple crimes after leading a Swansea police sergeant on a high-speed pursuit Saturday afternoon. Benjamin Whitaker, 47, lost control of the car he was driving while trying to turn onto a dirt road at high-speed and slammed underneath a mobile home ending the chase.
According to the Swansea sergeant, Whitaker was driving a Chrysler on I.W. Hutto Road in Swansea when he first ran its licenses plate. That car was reported as stolen out of Lexington County. Instead of yielding to the officer's warning devices when activated, Whitaker sped away at a high rate of speed. Swansea's officer gave pursuit in his Pursuit Package equipped Dodge Charger.
The two speeding vehicles made their way out of town and eventually ended up on Happy Town Road headed toward Gaston. Whitaker attempted to turn left onto Graybar Road at speeds in excess of 80 miles-per-hour when he lost control of the stolen car, ran through a broad yard, and struck a singlewide mobile home knocking its entrance steps upside down in the yard. Because of the height of the home, Whitaker's speed propelled him further under the home until the front post of the passenger door brought it to a stop. The car was totaled in the collision with the home.
Swansea's police officer, who is expertly trained in pursuit driving, came to a controlled stop in home's yard, approached the crashed car, but notice it was smoking like it might catch fire. He notified his dispatch center who sent help from the Lexington County Fire Service and EMS. Both responded and checked out Whitaker and the smoking vehicle. Once it was established that the car wasn't going to burst into flames and Whitaker wasn't seriously injured, he was placed under arrest.
According to the Swansea Police Department, Whitaker has been charged with receiving stolen goods valued at less than $2,000, failure to stop for blue lights, operating an uninsured vehicle, driving under suspension second offense, simple possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center where he remained Sunday afternoon. His bond amount had either not been set or has not been released as of 1:45 p.m. on Father's Day, Sunday, June 21, 2020.

Hewson – it is for the time being necessary to point out that she is the second child of Bono and Ali Hewson – was launched upon the screen via Steven Soderbergh's ghoulish hospital drama The Knick. It was cruel and grim – a slowburn horror movie disguised as prestige TV. The Luminaries (BBC One, Sunday), adapted from Eleanor Catton's 2013 Booker-winning historical epic of the same name, is even weirder. Which is saying something considering The Knick ended with a doctor conducting experimental surgery on his own brain. What would it feel like to have someone conduct experimental surgery on your brain? A bit like sitting through the first episode of The Luminaries, I would imagine: confusing, grim and with many deathly dull interludes. Your vision might well turn bleary, too. This is an effect The Luminaries replicates by having key scenes take place in a void of inky blackness so that it is impossible to work out what is happening. Hewson is fantastic as Anna Wetherell, a Dubliner (I think) newly arrived on New Zealand's South Island during the country's Goldrush of the 1860s. So it's a shame Catton, adapting her own novel, doesn't give the plucky lead a great deal to do beyond looking baffled and upset (you will soon empathise). There has been a murder – though, because so much of The Luminaries occurs after sundown, it's hard to work out who has been killed, or even that someone has died in the first place. Still, it eventually transpires that Anna, a sex worker and opium user, is the chief suspect and so has been thrown in the clink. Her back story, such as it is, is filled in via flashbacks and the first of six instalments pings bewilderingly between the two timelines. The earlier chronicles the illiterate Wetherell's arrival in Dunedin, when she falls into the orbit of creepy fortune teller Lydia Wells (Eva Green). Wells is installed at the House of Many Wishes – a sort of mash-up of Twin Peaks' Red Room and one of those tented tea-houses from the Body and Soul area at Electric Picnic. And she is plainly up to no good. Nonetheless, she persuades Anna to move in without the Irishwoman pausing to question her new friend's motives. So much for Anna's supposed street-wise streak, which The Luminaries has worked so hard to establish. There's a love interest (Himesh Patel, from Richard Curtis's Yesterday). He and Wetherell flirt en route to Dunedin. Thereafter they appear fated to pass like creaking ships in the night (given the lack of illumination, they probably wouldn't notice each other anyway). The Luminaries is a joint production between the BBC and TV NZ, New Zealand's state television service. Apparently the mighty New Zealand television industry was capable of something at which RTÉ failed with Normal People: partnering with a bigger broadcaster to share its living culture with the wider world. Normal People was of course, and by contrast, commissioned in London, by the BBC. New Zealand's wild frontier days are wonderfully evoked and the scenery is of course gorgeous. The racism of the era is acknowledged with Chinese and Maori characters treated as subhuman. But the constant time jumps are disconcerting. As is the dreamy dialogue, which has a poetic lustre without ever threatening to make sense. Hewson is grounded and there's real heft to her performance. The Luminaries could very well turn her into a star. Yet there's little else to be said for a drama adrift in a fog of portentousness and seemingly content to leave the viewer flailing in shadows.
