Indiana Midget Week Features Elite Entry List, Grueling Schedule - Autoweek

deweweko.blogspot.com

IndyCar has the month of May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the USAC National Midgets has a week of June across the entire Hoosier State.

It’s Indiana Midget Week.

The six races at five tracks across six nights will play host to some of the best race car drivers in the discipline—encompassing a deep field of USAC regulars, World of Outlaws contenders and drivers who now ply their craft in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Indiana Midget Week is a championship within the larger championship. It pays points to the season-long championship battle but also crowns its own champion on Sunday night after the six races in six nights.

As such, the USAC championship contingent will be well represented in the form of defending series champion "Sunshine" Tyler Courtney, who enters six points ahead of Chris Windom, a two-time Indiana Sprint Week champion (2011, 2018) and the 2016 USAC Silver Crown champion.

Series regulars Buddy Kofoid, Tanner Thorson, Andrew Layser and Cannon McIntosh are all represented in the upper half of the standings, too.

But what makes Indiana Midget Week special are the outsiders who enter a few or the entirety of the schedule. The most notable entrant this season is exiled NASCAR star Kyle Larson, making his first full-time Midget Week attempt since 2012.

Larson is running what is called a true outlaw dirt schedule this season, competing in a mixture of World of Outlaws and All-Star Circuit of Champions 410 Sprint Car events, in addition to select Midget events like Indiana Midget Week.

Larson will drive for Tucker-Boat Motorsports alongside Windom and Layser, the defending USAC National Midget Rookie of the Year.

Larson has won five consecutive Sprint Car races across the All-Stars and Outlaws schedule, but also won his three most recent USAC Midget starts. He’s the defending Chili Bowl Midget Nationals champion from January, as well.

Daryn Pittman, the 2013 World of Outlaws Sprint Car champion, will compete in a single event at Gas City, where he made his most recent Indiana Midget Week start back in 2012.

NASCAR Cup Series regular Ricky Stenhouse will compete in four events this week—his first in the weeklong series since 2007.

Carson Macedo, a regular in the World of Outlaws for Kyle Larson Racing, will compete in three of the six races, at Gas City, Lincoln Park Night No. 1 and the final night at Kokomo.

It appears as if 38 drivers will contest the full six-race schedule. Two former Indiana Midget Week champions are looking to add a second crown to their resume in the form of Shane Golobic and Logan Seavey.

Other notable entrants include USAC Triple Crown champion Dave Darland and two-time USAC National Sprint Car champion Brady Bacon.
