The Kings took another significant step in their rebuilding efforts by signing forward Arthur Kaliyev and defenseman Jordan Spence to three-season entry-level contracts Wednesday.
Kaliyev was the Kings’ second-round draft pick in 2019 and Spence was their fourth-round selection.
Kaliyev, an 18-year-old New York native, scored a team-leading 98 points (44 goals, 54 assists) in 57 games for the Hamilton Bulldogs of the Ontario Hockey League this past season. He was the first player in Hamilton history to top 100 points when he had 102 in 2018-19.
Spence, 19, from Sydney, Australia, had 52 points (nine goals, 43 assists) in 60 games with Moncton (New Brunswick) of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in 2019-20. He was second in the QMJHL in assists and fourth in points while earning defenseman of the year honors.
The Kings’ 2019-20 season ended with a 29-35-6 record and a seventh-place finish in the eight-team Pacific Division. They failed to advance under the NHL’s return to play format after the regular season was halted March 12 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
