Jun 11, 2020 — Governor Cuomo announced Thursday that the North Country is among the five regions able to enter Phase 3 of re-opening, tomorrow. Central New York, Mohawk Valley, Finger Lakes, and the Southern Tier will also be able to enter the next phase.
In Phase 3, restaurants and other food services will be allowed to open for indoor service at 50% capacity while setting tables six feet apart and enforcing social distancing and masking among employees and customers.
Nail salons, tattoo parlors, massage therapists and other personal care businesses will also be able to open at 50% capacity.
Governor Cuomo has also authorized localities to use their discretion in deciding what playgrounds and public pools to open.
"When we reopen, the numbers continue to go down," as opposed to other states, Governor Cuomo points out, because of people in New York continuing to follow guidelines and use masks.
The North Country’s public health metrics for COVID-19 all remain well below the state’s thresholds. The number of new hospitalizations per capita is the lowest in New York.
Two weeks ago, miscommunications between local leaders and the Governor’s office led to a chaotic, delayed start to Phase 2.
