Paul finished seventh in MVP voting and was named to the All-NBA second team after averaging 17.6 points, 6.7 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game. More importantly, the 35-year-old changed his diet and stayed healthy the entire season.
But if a deal doesn’t arise, the Thunder would be content entering next season with the same squad that just earned the No. 5 seed in the West. Re-signing power forward Danilo Gallinari accomplishes that. If that’s the chosen route, the Thunder would still field trade offers for veterans like Paul, Dennis Schröder and Steven Adams.
“We may bring this team back for this season,” Presti said two weeks ago. “I don’t know what that would mean beyond the season.”
Keeping Paul delays OKC’s rebuild, but it doesn’t change the inevitability of a rebuild. Schröder and Adams are entering the final year of their contracts, and Paul could still be dealt this offseason, at the trade deadline, or next offseason, before he enters the final year of his contract.
Either way, the Thunder roster will look drastically different this time next year, which is why coach Billy Donovan parted ways with the team instead of signing an extension.
“Even if I could give him an idea of the way things would look this current year, at the end of the day, what does it look like over the next two to three years?” Presti said when addressing Donovan’s decision. “That’s the kind of thing that I don’t think that we’re in a position to be able to forecast.”
After the Thunder was eliminated in Game 7 against the Rockets, Paul thanked Thunder fans, and he also thanked Presti for being straightforward with him.
Paul followed that by saying, “I don’t know what the future holds.”
