Australian journalists evacuated from China after five-day diplomatic standoff - CNN

Posted: 08 Sep 2020 12:09 AM PDT

The exodus leaves Australia's media without any journalists working in China for the first time in nearly 50 years.
The diplomatic standoff began when the two men — Bill Birtles, Beijing correspondent for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), and Mike Smith, Shanghai correspondent for the Australian Financial Review (AFR) — were told they were "persons of interest in an investigation" into Cheng Lei, an Australian anchor for state broadcaster CGTN, according to the AFR. The Australian government said last week that Cheng had been detained by police in China, though she has yet to be charged with anything and Chinese authorities have not revealed what she is being investigated for.
The Australian government had already warned the ABC to remove its staff from China before the men were questioned by police, according to the broadcaster.
The ABC added that Birtles, for example, was hosting farewell drinks when the police visited his apartment and told him he was banned from leaving the country, and that he would be called in the following day for questioning over a "national security case." The broadcaster did not say what Birtles was questioned about.
Both journalists then sought refuge in Australian diplomatic missions in Beijing and Shanghai, respectively, while Canberra negotiated with Chinese officials to allow them to leave the country. The standoff lasted five days before the travel bans were rescinded and they were able to fly back to Sydney.
CNN Business has reached out to the Chinese foreign ministry about the case, but has yet to receive any response.
Australian foreign affairs minister Marise Payne said in a statement that the government "provided consular support to two Australian journalists in China to assist their return to Australia."
Birtles said on the ABC Tuesday that it was "very disappointing to have to leave under those circumstances."
"It's a relief to be back in a country with genuine rule of law," he added. "This was a whirlwind and not particularly good experience."
Speaking to CNN Business from quarantine in Australia, Smith said that the visits to his and Birtles' apartments had felt "very political."
"It was a very tense few days," he said of his time spent within the Australian consulate in Shanghai. He added that he and Birtles were allowed to leave China on the condition that they allowed themselves to be interviewed by China's Ministry of State Security about Cheng Lei.
"So we agreed to do that largely because we didn't really have any option. You don't want to be a Julian Assange and stuck in an embassy for years," Smith added, referring to the WikiLeaks founder who lived in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for nearly seven years to avoid extradition to Sweden.

Heightened tensions

The relationship between Australia and China has frayed in recent months after Canberra called for an investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic. The countries have since engaged in tit-for-tat trade restrictions.
In an editorial Tuesday, the Chinese state-backed tabloid Global Times said "the actions of Australian politicians in recent months indicates that they don't value trade ties with China as highly as their political interests."
Canberra already advises Australians that they may be "at risk of arbitrary detention" in China. Payne said in her statement that the travel advice, which was last updated July 7, remains unchanged.
For Australia's media industry, the departures of Birtles and Smith are highly significant: ABC reports that there are now no more journalists employed by Australian media in mainland China. That hasn't happened since 1972, when Canberra normalized relations with Beijing.
While there are still some Australian journalists working in China, all are employed by non-Australian media companies.
One other news outlet, The Australian, said Tuesday that it had been advised by Canberra against sending China correspondent Will Glasgow back to the country. Glasgow is currently in Australia but had been due to fly to Guangzhou last Sunday, he said on Twitter.

Poor relations

Trevor Watson, who was the ABC correspondent in Beijing from 1988 to 1990, told CNN Business there has been a marked shift in how the Chinese government views Australian journalists.
When Watson was working in the country, including when he covered the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, "there was a recognition that the ABC and Australian journalists operated independently of their government."
That has changed dramatically now, he said.
"They're quite fortunate really to be out of there," he said of Birtles and Smith. "Having been a regular visitor to China since 1979, I think it will be a very long time until I return."
Smith told CNN Business that being forced to leave China was "really sad."
"It's just become harder and harder to be a foreign correspondent in China," he added. "It's getting really hard for people to talk to you. It's becoming more authoritarian. I think it's becoming riskier and this really highlights that."
He said that prior to this event, he had been largely dismissive of any potential risk to Australians in China.
"If they're going to put exit bans on journalists, you don't know what they're willing to do to a prominent businessman or someone else who gets into trouble," he added.

Journalists in China

Foreign journalists in China have been facing scrutiny more broadly as well. Just days ago, Chinese authorities imposed new visa restrictions on foreign journalists working for American news organizations — including CNN.
And earlier this year, Beijing effectively expelled about a dozen journalists from the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal after the Trump administration capped the number of Chinese nationals allowed to work in the US offices of China's state-run media.
Since then, Washington has designated a growing number of US offices of China's state-run news organizations as "foreign missions," requiring them to file paperwork with US authorities on their finances and personnel. Beijing has hit back by demanding the same of multiple US outlets in China.
The Foreign Correspondents' Club of China said that "in the first half of 2020 alone, China expelled a record 17 foreign journalists by canceling press credentials."
"At least another 12 foreign correspondents in China have received punitive truncated-term visas, sometimes for as short as 1 month, rather than standard year-long visas," the organization added. "This comes in addition to increasing harassment and surveillance of foreign journalists, including physical assault and cyber attacks."

'It was a poor game from us' - Van Dijk making no excuses for Netherlands' lacklustre loss to Italy - Goal

Posted: 07 Sep 2020 11:42 PM PDT

Virgil van Dijk felt the Netherlands were suitably punished for a poor performance as they lost 1-0 to Italy in Monday's Nations League clash.

A header from Nicolo Barella secured victory for the Azzurri in Amsterdam and sent them top of Group A1, a point above the Oranje.

The home side kept Italy penned back in the closing minutes but created little by way of clear-cut chances, Manchester United's Donny van de Beek coming closest with a half-volley that was superbly saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

By the end of the match, the Netherlands had mustered just three shots on target, while Italy only fired four with Barella's finish proving to be the crucial moment in Monday's heavyweight clash.

Captain Van Dijk thought his side paid the price for a particularly off-colour display in the first half, as he was left frustrated by his team's performance.

"It was a poor game for us," the Liverpool defender told NOS. "We couldn't really put them under pressure, we were sloppy in possession.

"The pitch didn't help, either, but that shouldn't be an excuse. We should be better - that's the conclusion tonight.

"The first half wasn't good. After the break, we tried to turn that around, and you saw it did go better at times, but, generally, it wasn't a good match.

"You try to put on all your pressure and, at a certain point, the players also get tired. It's then difficult to keep that up and, when we have the ball, to keep making runs.

"But I'm not going to make excuses. The first half, in particular, was average to poor."

Frenkie de Jong thought the Dutch were forced too far apart by Italy's pressing, leaving them unable to exploit any potential Azzurri gaps.

"They put pressure on us quickly," said the Barcelona midfielder. "They split us apart like that. When we had the ball, we were often far apart. It's then difficult to play football.

"This says nothing about our qualities. We will have to do better in the away game."

Next up for the Netherlands is a friendly with Mexico before visits to Bosnia & Herzegovina and Italy during the next round of Nations League matches.

Italy, meanwhile, will meet Moldova for a friendly of their own before a visit to Poland and that clash with the Dutch squad in Milan.

Mulan charges to top spot in opening weekend box office takings in Singapore for 2020 - The Straits Times

Mulan charges to top spot in opening weekend box office takings in Singapore for 2020 - The Straits Times

SINGAPORE - In a period when the cinema trade is looking for good news, the Disney period drama Mulan has offered some cheer by squeaking past the one million dollar mark at the Singapore box office in its opening weekend.

Its return of S$1,001,935 from Friday to Sunday (Sept 4 - 6) across 194 screens gives it the highest opening weekend take of any film here so far this year.

The figures of the live-action remake of a 1998 animated feature of the same name beat the $763,765 opening weekend take of science-fiction movie Tenet (Aug 26-30) and also that of Korean zombie movie Train To Busan: Peninsula, which earned $962,000 in its opening weekend, from July 16 to July 19, days after the re-opening of cinemas here on July 13.

Movie halls closed from March 27 to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Mulan tells the story of fabled Chinese woman Hua Mulan, who impersonates a man to take her father's place after an imperial decree orders each household to send a man to join the army.

The strong takings for the movie, which stars Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Tzi Ma, Jason Scott Lee, Gong Li and Jet Li, bodes well for the cinema trade, now affected by lingering public fears about coronavirus infection and social distance measures which have limited seating capacity to 25 per cent.

Delayed goal, delayed celebration for Lightning’s Yanni Gourde - Tampa Bay Times

Posted: 07 Sep 2020 10:42 PM PDT

A delayed goal horn didn't stop the Lightning from (eventually) celebrating Yanni Gourde's goal early in the second period against the Islanders in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final Monday night.

When the Lightning forward slipped the piece of rubber past New York's Semyon Varlamov, officials didn't immediately blow their whistles. Play continued in Edmonton as if the goal hadn't happened.

Pat Maroon was able to move the puck behind Varlamov's left leg, forcing the goaltender to look over his left shoulder to keep track of the play. Maroon poked the puck in between Varlamov's skate and the goal post, allowing Gourde to grab it in the wide-open crease.

"The, uh, puck entered the net," the official said seconds after the goal was actually scored.

On the broadcast, Gourde hugged Cedric Paquette before finding Maroon near the team bench as the Lightning took a 4-1 lead.

"I knew there was a chance that it could have been in," Gourde said. "Obviously, as soon as I shot it, I saw the stick there but it goes so fast I didn't know if the puck actually crossed the line right away, so we just kept on playing and when I heard the buzzer go off, I kind of knew the puck went in."

From the bench, coach Jon Cooper wasn't sure if the puck went in either, especially based on his team's reaction (or lack thereof) to the play.

"All the players usually know when pucks go in the net, and nobody did," he said after the 8-2 win. "Gordo's scored a lot of goals in his career, from 3 feet outside of the net, and that's another one. And when that's happening, you know Gordo's doing the right things."

Late in the third period, Gourde netted the Lightning's eighth goal of the night with a one-man advantage, his first power-play goal the playoffs.

He raced down the slot as Kevin Shattenkirk passed him the puck from the right corner. He quickly shot on Varlamov to net his fifth goal through 14 postseason games.

Trump launches unprecedented attack on military leadership he appointed - CNN

Posted: 07 Sep 2020 10:09 PM PDT

"I'm not saying the military's in love with me -- the soldiers are, the top people in the Pentagon probably aren't because they want to do nothing but fight wars so that all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy," Trump told reporters at a White House news conference.
Trump's extraordinary comments come as several defense officials tell CNN relations between the President and Pentagon leadership are becoming increasingly strained.
They also followed efforts by Trump to convince the public that he had not made a series of reported disparaging remarks about US military personnel and veterans, which were first reported by The Atlantic magazine.
A former senior administration official confirmed to CNN that Trump referred to fallen US service members at the Aisne-Marne cemetery in crude and derogatory terms during a November 2018 trip to France to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Other outlets, including Fox News, have confirmed much of The Atlantic's reporting, which Trump and the White House vehemently deny.
Some have expressed concern that the President's Monday accusations against the military's top brass could have a corrosive effect.
"The President's comments about the motivations of military leaders not only demeans their service and that of those they lead; he lends credence to the very disdain and thoughtlessness he tries to deny," retired US Navy Rear Admiral and CNN analyst John Kirby said.
The Pentagon did not respond to a request for comment on Monday's remarks.
While Trump has publicly disparaged the service of several high-profile veterans such as the late Sen. John McCain and his former Secretary of Defense, retired Gen. Jim Mattis, Monday's broadside was on a new level targeting leaders he appointed to carry out his orders.
Trump has also repeatedly touted boosting the defense budget as one of his administration's major accomplishments, citing it as evidence of his support for the military, spending that has also benefited defense contractors.

Top commanders exhausted and worried

CNN has previously reported that relations between Trump and his Defense Secretary Mark Esper are tense, with Trump believed to be on the verge of replacing him. But, less than two months from the presidential election, the Pentagon's top commanders are growing increasingly exhausted and worried about their relationship with the President, several defense officials tell CNN.
A critical area of concern is how the Pentagon would respond if Trump invokes the Insurrection Act to put US military troops on the streets to deal with civilian protestors as he continues to stoke divisions across the country in the run up to the election. Trump floated the idea last month and, after he first made the threat in June, Esper publicly broke with him by saying he opposed any such move.
To avoid a new showdown with the White House, for the last several weeks, top military officials -- including General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff -- have been getting regular briefings on civil unrest in major cities across the country. The idea is to be ready with alternative plans for state-activated National Guard and other federal civilian law enforcement rather than have active duty troops potentially clash with protesters, according to several defense officials.
Another issue that could lead to a clash between Trump and military leadership is the $740 billion defense bill that would strip the names of Confederate generals in the face of vocal opposition from Trump who said he'd veto any move.
The entire Joint Chiefs have made it clear they want to eliminate what they see as the divisive symbols of the Confederacy.
Milley did not hold back on the issue in appearance before Congress in July, stating that "those officers turned their back on their oath," referring to the names on the bases. "It was an act of treason, at the time, against the Union, against the Stars and Stripes, against the US Constitution."
Military leadership have embarked on several initiatives aimed at improving racial inclusion. Officials say it is vital work to ensure that when troops go to war, they are a cohesive fighting force.
There are also very real concerns about the aftermath of November's election, particularly if the result is not immediately clear after election night.
Last month Milley told members of Congress that the military will not play a role in the election and won't help settle any disputes if the results are contested.
"In the event of a dispute over some aspect of the elections, by law U.S. courts and the U.S. Congress are required to resolve any disputes, not the U.S. Military," Milley wrote in a letter to the House Armed services committee.
"I believe deeply in the principle of an apolitical U.S. military," Milley wrote.
Despite what Milley stated, should there be some kind of constitutional crisis if the election result is unclear, the military could well be put in a tricky position especially as Trump's opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden, floated the idea they might become involved in an interview in June.
"I promise you, I'm absolutely convinced they will escort him from the White House with great dispatch," Biden said, referring to the US military's Joint Chiefs of Staff.
On top of that uncertainty there are concerns Trump may launch military action against an adversary before Inauguration Day, regardless of who wins the White House are also front and center for the top brass.

Trump: Pentagon leaders want war to keep contractors 'happy' - KSAT San Antonio

Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:09 PM PDT

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said Monday that top Defense Department leaders want to keep waging wars in order to keep defense contractors "happy."

Trump continues to fight allegations that he made offensive comments about fallen U.S. service-members, including calling World War I dead at an American military cemetery in France "losers" and "suckers" in 2018. The Atlantic first reported on the anonymously sourced allegations.

At a White House news conference Monday, Trump repeated his claim that the story was a "hoax" and said: "I'm not saying the military's in love with me. The soldiers are."

However, he added, "The top people in the Pentagon probably aren't because they want to do nothing but fight wars so all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy."

Trump's relationship with military brass has been strained since he threatened this summer to use the Insurrection Act to provide troops for law enforcement during the protests after George Floyd's death. Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has also expressed regret for walking with Trump through Lafayette Square in what turned out to be a photo op during the protests.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper, whom Trump appointed, was defense contractor Raytheon Co.'s chief Washington lobbyist before he became Army secretary in 2017.

Chinese lawyers struggle to access Hong Kong 'speedboat fugitives' - Yahoo News

Posted: 07 Sep 2020 08:09 PM PDT

Police patrol after protesters rallied in Hong Kong to protest against the government's decision to postpone the legislative council elections

Lawyers representing some of the Hong Kongers captured by the Chinese coastguard as they allegedly tried to flee the financial hub by speedboat told AFP Monday that they have been denied access to their clients.

Mainland authorities announced a group of 12 Hong Kongers were intercepted some 70 kilometres (43 miles) southeast of the city on August 23 trying to escape by boat, and were handed over to police in neighbouring Shenzhen.

They have since disappeared into authoritarian China's opaque judicial system.

Neither mainland nor Hong Kong authorities have publicly confirmed who has been arrested.

But Hong Kong media outlets -- including a pro-Beijing newspaper -- have identified some of those on board, while relatives of those detained have also come forward.

Some of those identified as being on the speedboat were facing prosecution for involvement in pro-democracy protests last year.

One man -- Andy Li -- was recently arrested under a new security law Beijing imposed on Hong Kong.

Another is a dual national with Hong Kong and Portuguese citizenship.

On Monday, two mainland-based lawyers told AFP they had tried and failed to visit their clients after being instructed by family members.

"They said I can't prove that the instructions I have came from family members even though I have provided my client's birth certificate issued in Hong Kong," said Ren Quanniu, a lawyer who travelled nearly 1,500 km (over 900 miles) from central China to Shenzhen.

Ren said he also visited the police officer in charge of the case, who refused to receive legal documents -- including a written request for his client Wong Wai-yin to be handed back to Hong Kong jurisdiction.

He said he then filed a complaint with prosecutors in Shenzhen.

Lu Siwei, another lawyer, said he had a similar experience when he tried to visit his client in detention last week.

Ren and Lu both said Shenzhen police were treating the case as an "illegal border crossing", an offence that carries up to a year in jail.

However, Lu said police informed him some of the detained may also face the more serious charges of "organising others to cross the border illegally", which carries sentences up to life in jail.

Ren said other lawyers he knew were representing the arrestees were also being denied access.

The prospect of Hong Kongers getting entangled in authoritarian China's judicial system was the spark that lit seven months of huge and often violent pro-democracy protests last year.

The movement began in response to plan to allow extraditions to the mainland and soon morphed into  calls for democracy and greater police accountability.

Since then authorities have cracked down on the city's democracy movement, prosecuting thousands of protesters as well as leading activists.

In June, Beijing blanketed semi-autonomous Hong Kong in a new security law which toppled the legal firewall between the two.

Under the law, China has claimed jurisdiction for serious national security crimes and empowered its security agents to operate openly in Hong Kong for the first time.

Southwestern Louisiana Office of Public Health COVID-19 mobile testing and necessary vaccines to aid in Hurricane Laura recovery | Department of Health | State of Louisiana - Louisiana Department of Health - Louisiana.gov

Posted: 07 Sep 2020 07:44 PM PDT

Mobile testing for COVID-19 and vaccines for tetanus, hepatitis A and hepatitis B will be available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, September 5 at 113 W. McNeese Street in Lake Charles. This endeavor is in conjunction with the Louisiana National Guard (LANG).

Residents are encouraged to take care of their health during this time of recovery. COVID-19 continues to be active in Louisiana, and now is not the time to let down your guard. Continue to take precautions: practice social distancing, wear a mask and wash your hands. If you have been exposed or have symptoms of COVID-19, get tested.

Hazardous conditions during recovery make it necessary to ensure that individuals are up to date on tetanus vaccines. The CDC recommends that everyone receive a tetanus vaccine every 10 years with a booster at 5 or more years if an individual should receive a puncture or deep wound. Additionally, hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines will be offered to those at risk.

This mobile COVID-19 testing site will be using the laboratory eTrueNorth to conduct the tests and provide results. Pre-registration is NOT required but encouraged by going to www.DoINeedaCOVID19test.com.

People must provide a telephone number and email address to be tested. An ID is NOT required. With eTrueNorth laboratory processing the tests, it is taking about 3-5 days to get results.

Test results will be provided by email notification and on the eTrueNorth portal. If someone tests positive, they will also be contacted by phone. There is no phone number to call for results. Results will only be provided by email and in the portal.

Symptoms of COVID-19 include:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Test site details

  • This drive-thru site is staffed by members of LANG and the Office of Public Health.
  • COVID testing is open for any Louisiana resident 16 years of age and older. LANG-operated sites require valid Louisiana identification. However, other testing sites may not require ID.
  • Vaccinations are available to individuals 16 and older.
  • Once on site, those receiving vaccines or testing will need to wear a mask and stay in their cars for verification of eligibility criteria, ID check and self-administered COVID test. LDH nurses will administer vaccinations.
  • The site will use a self-administered nasal swab test that will allow those being tested to swab their own nose on site while in their vehicles, observed by a trained medical volunteer to ensure the sample is taken correctly, and drop the sealed sample into a container on their way out of the drive-thru site.
  • Once received, test results will be available in the eTrueNorth portal and by email. Those who test positive will receive a phone call.
  • While awaiting results, individuals who have been tested should follow CDC guidelines and take steps to help prevent the virus from spreading to people in their home and community.

Save the number 877-766-2130 in your phone

Anyone who receives a call from 877-766-2130 is urged to answer, as the call is from a contact tracer who will keep an individual's information private. Personal information is used to quickly identify anyone a COVID-positive individual may have been in close contact with to help contain the spread of the coronavirus. Everyone called by a contact tracer is advised to watch themselves for signs of illness for 14 days from when they first came in contact with the COVID-19 person.

If a resource need is identified through the contact tracing interview, the case is flagged for follow-up from a resource coordinator social worker who can connect individuals with resources including medication, masks, food assistance and even help locating alternative housing.

If someone calls from a number other than 877-766-2130, claims to be a contact tracer and asks for personal information, hang up immediately.

Can the Celtics Ride on the Back of Jayson Tatum’s Brilliance or will Pascal Siakam Rise Up to Be a ... - EssentiallySports

Posted: 07 Sep 2020 07:08 PM PDT

The Eastern conference is treating us to some exciting second-round matchups in the 2020 NBA playoffs. #2 and #3 seeded Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics have locked horns in what seems like a series that will stretch till the very end. Moreover, it has opened up a personal battle between two stars: Pascal Siakam and Jayson Tatum

Both athletes are in more or less similar stages of their careers. While Siakam has a ring to show off his achievements, Tatum is one of the brightest young stars in the league.

The Celtics, under the prowess of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, took an early 2-0 lead in the series against the Raptors. However, this matchup between the Raptors and the most decorated team in the NBA has the capacity to go all the way till Game 7.

So far, we've embraced four games, in which both teams share an equal amount of success.

Jayson Tatum: The future of the Boston Celtics?

Just how good has 22-year-old Tatum been? From being a player who didn't want to join the Celtics in 2017, he somehow seems to fit the team perfectly. His combination with Jaylen Brown is a treat to watch, and we've been witnessing it in this series as well.

Tatum has been brilliant with his game from an individual standpoint. His flair for the game captivates the viewers' eyes, which only prolongs with every fadeaway he converts!

So far, the 6'8" forward is averaging 23.5 points, 4.2 assists, and 9.0 assists in the series. This stat might not exactly reflect his inspiring presence on the court!

ALSO READ- Jayson Tatum Reveals He Didn't Want To Be Drafted By The Celtics

Even in a losing cause in Game 4, Tatum shot 55.6% from the field which speaks a lot about his determination to succeed. That said, Tatum fits perfectly into Boston's culture and how they've been earning a name for themselves in the league all these years.

Even though Jaylen Brown has been equally important for the Celtics, Tatum is the eye-catching star. Watching him suit up in the Celtics' traditional green uniform makes one feel like he'll stay at this franchise till the very end of his career.

The late Kobe Bryant highly inspires Tatum to perform, and we can see the Mamba Mentality which drives the Celtics youngster to get better. This season is a platform for Tatum to announce his talent on the biggest stage.

However, he needs to get past the Raptors and Pascal Siakam to be able to advance further in the Playoffs.

ALSO READ- "That Was a Dream Come True for Me": Jayson Tatum Recalls His Workout With Kobe Bryant

Pascal Siakam: The key factor to Toronto's success?

Pascal Siakam winning the 2019 Most Improved Player award served as a motivation for what was about to come in this year. Kawhi Leonard left the north to join the LA Clippers and filled the void he left behind is no easy task.

Raptors' Nick Nurse has earlier mentioned that Siakam is the one that has taken over Kawhi's duties and the Cameroonian was brilliant in the 2019/20 regular season. He drastically improved his average from last year, which undeniably carried Toronto into the Playoffs as the #2 seed.

But has Siakam been able to live up to his duties in the series against the Celtics? Well, he was tremendous in Game 4, racking up 23.0 points and 11.0 rebounds to propel the Raptors to victory.

ALSO READ- Toronto Raptors Coach Nick Nurse Downplays the Loss of Kawhi Leonard to the Team

Moreover, in the first three games, Siakam was unable to make a lasting impact, which in turn deterred Toronto's chance of winning. Even though the reigning champions are stacked with talent, it all comes down to Siakam's ability to effectively cover the floor on both ends.

The numbers he put up in the first three games were decent, but not enough to replicate what Kawhi did for them last season. Siakam's 17.2 PPG average in this series needs to go up a notch if the Raptors are looking to seal the second round.

In games where Siakam is nowhere to be found, the Raptors look uninspired. He's that flaming factor to uplift the team during challenging times.

Celtics vs. Raptors: Tatum or Siakam? Who'll guide their team to glory?

Tatum vs Siakam seems like an exciting prospect. Set aside the stats for a minute and look at the quality of these two players. They undoubtedly have the capacity to step up and deliver.

But it all comes down to how they handle the pressure and progress in these moments.

We've already seen Siakam stepping up in Game 4 to help the Raptors even the series. With just three games to go, it is going to get intense! On one hand, you have Jayson Tatum, Celtics' rising star, and one for the future.

On the other, there's Pascal Siakam, who has the pressure of defending his team's crown. It is in these moments that great players step up and perform.

Siakam has just found his rhythm and if he gets going, the Raptors might be able to pull off the comeback with the amount of experience that they've got.

Trump Disputes Media Allegations He Disparaged US War Dead - Malaysia Sun

Posted: 07 Sep 2020 07:08 PM PDT

WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday assailed U.S. news media accounts that in 2018 he belittled American World War I casualties while skipping a centenary commemoration of the end of the war on a rainy day at a cemetery outside Paris.

"The Democrats, together with the corrupt Fake News Media, have launched a massive Disinformation Campaign the likes of which has never been seen before," the U.S. leader claimed on Twitter. "They will say anything, like their recent lies about me and the Military, and hope that it sticks...."

The Atlantic magazine reported late last week that the U.S. leader rejected going to the World War I cemetery at Aisne-Marne in part because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain. The account, based on four anonymous sources, said that Trump commented to senior staff aides on the morning of the November event, "Why should I go to that cemetery? It's filled with losers."

On the same trip, the magazine said, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 U.S. Marines who lost their lives during the Belleau Wood battle as "suckers" for getting killed.

The Republican Trump, facing a difficult re-election contest November 3 against his Democratic opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden, immediately rejected the Atlantic's account of his comments. But several other U.S. news outlets have subsequently confirmed from their own unnamed sources that Trump was uninterested in attending Aisne-Marne event. He did attend a separate commemoration of allied war dead the following day.

The White House said at the time that Trump called off the visit to the Aisne-Marne cemetery because the foul weather would have made it dangerous for him to make a helicopter flight there. His chief of staff at the time, retired Marine Corps Gen. John Kelly, attended the ceremony after traveling there by motorcade.

During a Friday news conference, Trump said he "called home, I spoke to my wife (first lady Melania Trump) and I said 'I hate this. I came here to go to that ceremony.' And to the one that was the following day which I did go to. I said I feel terribly. And that was the end of it."

Fact checkers, however, said Trump couldn't have "called home" to Washington to talk to his wife because she was in Paris accompanying him on the trip and that night, they had dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron.

After the Atlantic article appeared online, Biden attacked Trump.

"If what is written in The Atlantic is true, it's disgusting," Biden said. "And it affirms what most of us believe to be true: that Donald Trump is not fit to do the job of president, to be the commander in chief."

Robert Wilkie, Trump's veterans affairs chief, told CNN on Sunday that he had never heard Trump belittle military service or the country's war dead.

"I'm looking at the Donald Trump I know," Wilkie said. "I've watched this president sign letters of condolences" written to families of those killed in action.

The Bachelor: Cast members suspected Bella was a 'secret actress' during filming - Daily Mail

The Bachelor EXCLUSIVE: How the cast suspected Bella Varelis was an actress after she spent 'a lot more time with producers' than anyone else

  • Do you have a story about The Bachelor? Email tips@dailymail.com

The Bachelor's Bella Varelis has previously denied being a 'secret actress', after rumours swirled she only signed up to boost her profile.

And Daily Mail Australia can now reveal that Bella's own co-stars suspected she had an ulterior motive for appearing on the dating show.

An insider said on Tuesday that several women doubted her intentions during filming because she spent so much one-on-one time with the producers.

'It was hard to compete with Bella because she spent a lot more time with producers than anyone else,' the source claimed.

'She always seemed way too self-aware, while other girls didn't care how they were perceived [on camera].'

The insider added that Bella was 'very vague' when asked about her job in marketing, and as a consequence 'nobody really knew what she did for a living'.

They also claimed that she 'made no effort to talk to any of the girls' until the arrival of post-lockdown intruder Bec Cvilikas.

It comes just a week after Bella publicly slammed allegations she was an aspiring actress who once dreamt of moving to LA to further her career.

'I've never moved to LA, I've never wanted or tried to be an actress in Australia, never wanted or tried to get work as an actress in LA and certainly am not acting on the Bachelor,' the 25-year-old wrote on Instagram.

Without naming names, she claimed that people had tried to 'fabricate' stories about her in order to feel 'relevant' and 'important'.

Something to hide? The insider added that Bella was 'very vague' when asked about her job in marketing, and as a consequence 'nobody really knew what she did for a living'

'It's unfortunate that you and many other people have believed it but I can confirm -  my tears weren't acting, they were real,' she added.

Last month, talent manager Michael Beveridge claimed that Bella had once planned to move to Hollywood to pursue her dreams of stardom.

Speaking on the Friendship Rose podcast with comedian Rose Callaghan, Michael claimed: 'She said she was moving to Los Angeles. Bella wanted to be an actress, or wants to be an actress.'

He explained that Bella had been signed to an influencer management company that he used to run with his ex-girlfriend.

The Bachelor starring Locklan 'Locky' Gilbert continues Wednesday at 7:30pm on Channel 10
