Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) updated its entry-level, hybrid-flash storage portfolio to enable automatic tiering, integration with HPE Cloud Volumes Backup, and eliminate common causes of downtime via a new Health Check tool.
The new Modular Smart Arrays (MSAs) also include a choice of hard disk drive (HDD) and solid-state drive (SSD) media.
The rapid transition to remote and work-from-home deployments, in addition to the added security risks and network requirements often with fewer staff and resources, has either flattened or slashed small to midsized business (SMB) IT budgets, thus driving them to do more with less.
With both IT and human resources taking heavy hits, these performance and automation updates aim to simplify the demands of distributed workloads as the use of cloud-based software such as Microsoft Teams, Slack, Webex Teams, and Zoom has increased rapidly.
The updated storage systems include a standard set of features including a new HPE MSA Storage Management Utility tool that provides step-by-step guided workflows to configure the array straight out of the box.
The arrays also have a new tiering algorithm that delivers improved performance and lower latencies by automatically responding to input-output changes in real-time, which keeps hot data on the fastest media — such as SSD flash. This maximizes SSD performance and HDD capacity based on workload needs. HPE says this feature drives up to 45% more workload application acceleration than earlier models.
A new redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID)-based data protection feature called MSA Data Protection Plus (MSA-DP+) spans all drives and eliminates idle HDD spares to improve overall system efficiency and performance. If a drive fails, HPE claims rebuild performance is up to 2,500% faster than earlier versions. Arrays using MSA-DP+ accommodate expansion with support for an additional single drive or whole expansion shelves to an existing configuration.
HPE also improved its MSA Health Check tool that eliminates common causes of downtime. The cloud-based tool searches sensor data for known issues to cut down administrative overhead and maximizing availability. According to HPE, the Health Check tool will eliminate 76% of MSA support calls.
