Cullowhee, N.C. – Exactly two weeks out from its 2020 season-opener, the Western Carolina football team completed its longest scrimmage of the amended preseason fall camp over the weekend, doing so last Saturday on the turf at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field.

"We had a really good day here last Saturday; got the coaches off the field with the Southern Conference officials and let them go play ball," said Speir referencing the squad's first full scrimmage. "I thought that the effort and energy was really high. Offensively, I thought that we moved the ball really well at times. The biggest problem that we had in our first scrimmage was that we turned the ball over too many times."

He continued, "As a head coach, you walk off the field after an intrasquad scrimmage and you don't know whether to be happy or sad. It was a great day for the defense in that aspect (of forcing turnovers). We know as a football team that our offense can't turn it over for us to be successful. But, I thought that our defense tackled well, I thought that they rallied to the ball, and did a good job in not giving up a bunch of big plays."

Speir stressed the importance of the next two weeks – this week in particular – and preaching consistency, discipline, and ball security to his football team.

After position meetings and weight training sessions on Monday, the squad will pause activity on Tuesday (Nov. 3) for the national election day as WCU Athletics and the NCAA continue to promote civic engagement. Speir said the squad will practice three times the remainder of this week before closing preseason camp ahead of next week's game-week preparations.

"We're going to have two days off getting healthy. Then, we're going to practice three times this week and they've got to be big time, physical practices. Again, technique, fundamental practices and then next week, it's game week – and that's fun to say."

As a reminder, WCU's preseason football practices this fall are closed to the public.

Western Carolina opens its three-nonconference road game 2020 fall schedule on Saturday, Nov. 14 at Liberty with kickoff at Noon. The following Saturday, WCU travels to NCAA FCS-member Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 21 for a 3 pm kickoff in the Opportunity Bowl, and concludes the fall portion of its slate at North Carolina on Friday, Dec. 11 in Chapel Hill.
