Twisted Metal helped make the original PlayStation a runaway success during the mid to late 1990s. It kickstarted the vehicle combat genre and became a staple on early Sony systems. Unfortunately, the franchise now sulks in the shadows, drifting further into obscurity with each passing year -- but fans want a new entry on next-gen consoles.

Later installments in the Twisted Metal series failed to recreate the simplistic joys of the first few titles. However, few games capture the edgy essence of the '90s better than Twisted Metal. It had everything an angsty teenager could want: Fast cars, explosions, over the top carnage and sinister-looking characters. It combined dark undertones with fast-paced vehicle combat, creating a highly original video game unlike any other at the time.

Gamers haven't seen a lot of vehicular combat games in recent years. The genre seemed to take a hiatus after 2012's Twisted Metal failed to captivate fans. There are still a few titles available on modern consoles, but many are remakes of older games that are subpar at best. Introducing the world to a next-gen Twisted Metal might draw more attention to the genre, while allowing the long-running series to corner a section of the video game market.

More video game fans are playing online multiplayer games than ever before. There are plenty of multiplayer first-person shooters and racing games available on contemporary consoles, but there aren't many that take advantage of vehicular combat.

A modern Twisted Metal entry could give players unique multiplayer experiences that would differ from most online games. The thrill of blasting a friend's death machine to bits as they barrage the player with rabid obscenities never gets old. It would give gamers a wider variety of online games to choose from and introduce younger generations to the Twisted Metal franchise.

It's been nearly a decade since the last Twisted Metal release. Although the franchise suffered from oversaturation during the late '90s, many fans believe a new Twisted Metal game is long overdue. Its innovative vehicle combat made it stand out in an era full of third-person shooters and racing sims. A next-gen entry could do the same, since the genre has been absent for so long.

With a rumored Twisted Metal television series in the works and next-gen consoles emerging, now is the perfect time to reunite gamers with this unconventional series.
