LAPEER — The Lapeer County Complex Building on Clay Street in downtown Lapeer will be closed to the public Wednesday (Nov. 18) as a result of a new epidemic order issued Sunday evening by the Michigan Dept. of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. The building will be locked to public entry at the end of business today.
Court operations will continue, said interim County Administrator Cheryl Clark. Judges and administrators will attempt to conduct business electronically. When that’s not possible, in-person proceedings may be conducted. The building includes District Court 71A, 40th Circuit Court as well as Lapeer County Probate Court.
County employees will continue to work in the building.
The public will be allowed to enter the County Complex Building by appointment only. Phone numbers of departments and offices within the building will be posted on front entrance windows. Everyone who enters the building, no exception, will be required to wear a face mask.
Also to be locked to public entry Wednesday will be the Lapeer County Annex Building at the northeast corner of Clay and Cedar streets that houses the Lapeer Dept. of Veterans Affairs and Lapeer County Register of Deeds offices. Entry to the building will be by appointment only.
Officials are planning the building closures through Dec. 8 as stipulated by the MDHHS order, however they anticipate COVID-19 restrictions related to municipal buildings may be extended by state officials. If that happens, it’s possible the County Complex Building may not reopen to the public until January.
