US being left behind after Asia forms world's biggest ... - Thomson Reuters Foundation

Posted: 16 Nov 2020 09:08 PM PST

WASHINGTON, Nov 16 (Reuters) - The U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Monday said it was concerned the United States was being left behind after China and 15 other Asia-Pacific economies on Sunday formed the world's largest free trade bloc, cementing China's dominant role in regional trade.

The Chamber welcomed the trade-liberalizing benefits of the new Regional Comprehensive Partnership Agreement (RCEP), but said Washington should not join the new trade bloc given its shortcomings.

Donald Trump aide promises 'very professional transition' to Joe Biden - Deccan Herald

Posted: 16 Nov 2020 09:08 PM PST

President Donald Trump's national security adviser promised a "very professional transition" to the administration of President-elect Joe Biden in an interview broadcast Monday, even as Trump continues to falsely claim he won the November election.

Speaking to the Global Security Forum hosted in part by Qatar, Robert O'Brien several times mentioned the transition and referred to recent peace deals that Bahrain, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates struck with Israel as "a great legacy for the president to have as he leaves office."

While caveating that Trump did have outstanding court challenges, O'Brien's comments signaled some of the firmest statements yet from a senior administration official acknowledging Biden's win in the Nov 3 vote.

"If the Biden-Harris ticket is determined to be the winner — obviously things look that way now — we'll have a very professional transition from the National Security Council. There's no question about it," O'Brien said.

"They're going to have very professional folks coming in to take these positions." He added: "We've passed the baton and had peaceful, successful transitions even in the most contentious periods."

Since losing, Trump has made unsubstantiated claims about the election on Twitter. There is no evidence of widespread fraud in the vote. Officials from both the Democratic and Republican parties have said the poll went well, as have international observers.

The federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency also says: "The November 3rd election was the most secure in American history."

O'Brien, Trump's fourth national security adviser, previously served as his special envoy on hostage affairs. Asked about American journalist Austin Tice, who disappeared covering Syria's civil war in 2012 and is believed to be held by Damascus, O'Brien said the US was using "every lever" to get him back home.

"We are using every tool, whether it's through allies, whether it's through adversaries," O'Brien said.

"We would like to get him back and I'd like to see him him back and I know the president would like to see him back before he leaves office." Syria has not acknowledged holding Tice. A top Lebanese security official said Saturday that he visited Syria for two days to speak with officials there about Tice.

Kolude KeyHub: A solid mobile keyboard choice - TechRepublic

Posted: 16 Nov 2020 08:44 PM PST

Looking for a well-built external keyboards to attach to your MacBook Pro, or just about any device? Jack Wallen reviews the Kolude KeyHub and concludes that it might be the one.

keyhubasm.jpg

Image: Jack Wallen/TechRepublic

I love a good keyboard--almost too much. I liken my connection to a good keyboard to the relationship a professional athlete has to their favorite game-day shoes. When you pound keys day in and day out to produce over a million words a year, the keyboard used is of great significance. The right keyboard makes the job easy, while the wrong keyboard can put a major dent in your productivity.

When I find a keyboard that helps make my job easier, it's as though everything in the universe comes together in that moment and all is well. For that moment. Because there are always other moments, waiting in the background, ready to wreck that bliss.

When a new-to-me company reached out to ask if I'd be interested in kicking the tires of their all-in-in keyboard "hub," I accepted with trepidation. Why? Because most of these mobile types of keyboards tend to be on the less-than-effective side of productivity. They're either poorly designed, too cheap to last, or function on a level that's better suited to those who just want a keyboard to convert their tablets into pseudo laptops.

The box arrived and I immediately opened it like a kid at Christmas, because tech excites me. The second I pulled the KeyHub out of the box, all of those preconceived ideas flushed from my system. This keyboard was solid--crafted out of aluminum (top and bottom), this baby was built to last.

But the KeyHub has one seriously handy trick up its sleeve, beyond its solid build.

SEE: Hardware inventory policy (TechRepublic Premium)

Unboxed, plugged in, and ready to go

I decided I didn't want to connect this laptop to a phone or a tablet. Instead, I wanted to give it the full treatment and plug it into a desktop. Thing is, nothing is going to pull me from my Happy Hacking Keyboard (HHK) on my primary desktop.

It just so happens that I have a Beaglebone board and a case prepped for review as well. I put that together, plugged the keyboard in, and installed Ubuntu Desktop 20.04

I had everything ready to go and began the testing. In fact, I'm typing on it right now and it is smooth as silk. Kolude has put together a keyboard that is an absolute dream for typists, from the key layout (which, I must confess, is decidedly Mac-centric) to the key travel and sound.

So good is the KeyHub, I'd say it's one of the most pleasing keyboards I've ever typed on. In fact, if the company made this in a split design, it could easily take the place of my Happy Hacking Keyboard. The keys are laid out in such a way that I don't feel the usual fatigue found with so many mobile keyboards, be they laptops or those used with tablets and phones. That does, of course, mean the keyboard keys are spaced out a bit more than I'm accustomed to. Because of that, your fingers will take a beat to acclimate to the layout--unless you've been using a laptop larger than 13".

Even the sound of this keyboard is pleasing. I've grown so used to the clickity-clack of the HHK, that all other keyboards are discerningly quiet. The KeyHub lives in that perfect space between too noisy and too quality, yet doesn't have the same plastic-y sound associated with many laptops I've experienced. It resides in that Three Bears-ian "just right" territory.

This keyboard should come with a trigger warning. The keys use a scissor for actuation. If, like me, you purchased a 2016 MacBook Pro with those dreaded scissor keys, you instinctually cringe at the utterance of the phrase "scissor key." However, these keys feel completely different than those that plagued Apple hardware. I've watched dust and other tiny debris settling on or near the keys, without the KeyHub crumbling in defeat. With my MacBook, I have to use every possible caution to keep those pesky particles from rendering the keys stuck or rrrrrrrrrrepeating over annnnnnnnd over.

The "hub" part of KeyHub

Okay, this is about mobile options, right? What is it about the KeyHub that makes it stand out, besides the build quality and key layout?

On the front-facing edge (that which would face your monitor) of the device is a row of ports (Figure A).

Figure A

keyhubbsm.jpg

The KeyHub's superpower is right in front of your eyes.

The KeyHub includes the following ports:

  • HDMI

  • TF

  • SD

  • USB 2.0

  • 3 x USB 3.0

  • PD

  • USB-C

Plug the keyboard in your device (for me it was USB-C to the Beaglebone) and you can then make use of the rest of the ports for whatever you need. That new MacBook Pro you purchased, the one that has a severe lack of available ports? Dock that laptop with this keyboard--which is actually quite an improvement over the Apple keyboard--and you've significantly extended the available ports on your laptop. That's a big plus. Those additional ports don't noticeably increase the size of the keyboard--it's still fairly compact, coming in at around 16.29" long and 5.19" deep.

Other features include:

The Kolude KeyHub is sure to please just about any type of user.

The caveats

It took me quite a while to find a nit to pick about the KeyHub, and what I found isn't something that will even register with most users. Because this is a very mobile-centric keyboard, it would be nice to have the ability to attach it to multiple devices like a laptop, a phone, and/or a tablet, and switch between them. The KeyHub was not designed for that purpose. If I'm being fair, this is a non-starter of a caveat, seeing as how it's not a feature the hardware boasts of. The KeyHub is also not Bluetooth compatible. But, again, that's not an advertised feature, and I find that Bluetooth keyboards can be problematic with some operating systems.

That's how good this keyboard is--I had to "invent" problems to find something to not like.

The cost

If you're interested in the KeyHub, it'll set you back $139, but it's worth every penny. Given that it's the holiday season, this would be a great gift for anyone who would enjoy a comfortable, well-built keyboard.

You can purchase the KeyHub from the Kolude site in either Space Grey or Silver. The KeyHub will work with Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows.

China, Asia-Pacific countries sign deal to form world’s biggest trading bloc - Marketplace

Posted: 16 Nov 2020 08:08 PM PST

Fifteen Asia-Pacific countries have signed a major China-backed trade deal that excludes the United States. It's called the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, and it forms the world's largest trading bloc, covering nearly a third of the global economy. China could be a big winner here.

Marketplace's Nova Safo has more, and the following is an edited transcript of his conversation with "Marketplace Morning Report" host Sabri Ben-Achour.

Sabri Ben-Achour: Fifteen countries are in this deal. What do they get out of it?

Nova Safo: Lower tariffs over time — we're looking at the next decade or two. The deal overall, analysts say, will not make huge changes in trade between these countries, in part because tariffs are already low between many of them and also the deal is limited in scope.

But the idea is that these countries — among them China, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Vietnam — would eventually stop taxing some of each others' exports to incentivize doing business with each other — for example, building products across factories in multiple countries.

The U.S. does this now in its trade deal with Mexico and Canada. The European Union does it, too.

This Asia-Pacific partnership would eclipse both of those alliances, just with its sheer size: $26 trillion in economic output. It's the world's biggest trade agreement.

Ben-Achour: The U.S. is not in this deal. In fact, this deal was supposed to rival the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which the U.S. was at the center of, before the Trump administration pulled out. So what does that mean? What does this deal achieve?

Safo: Well, it's the inverse of the TPP. China was excluded from the TPP, which was supposed to be a counterweight to China's economic power in the region.

Now with this deal, China is squarely at the center. It's the second-largest economy in the world, and the biggest one in this pact.

It potentially could see itself having a lot more influence with the countries involved, and less reliance on trade with the U.S. down the road.

President-elect Biden says 'more people may die' from Covid if Trump continues to delay transition - CNBC

Posted: 16 Nov 2020 08:08 PM PST

President-elect Joe Biden said on Monday that "more people may die" from the coronavirus if the Trump administration doesn't begin coordinating with his team on plans to vaccinate more than 300 million Americans against the virus.

"If we have to wait until Jan. 20 to start that planning, it puts us behind, over a month and a half," Biden said during a press briefing. "And so, it's important that it be done, that there be coordination now."

Biden's chief of staff, Ron Klain, the former Ebola czar under President Barack Obama, told NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that Biden's coronavirus advisors would meet with the leading drug companies developing coronavirus vaccines this week.

However, Klain said the president-elect's top health officials can't coordinate with federal government employees until the General Services Administration approves the transition process. Trump has refused to concede the election, though he acknowledged in a tweet posted Sunday that Biden had won, before walking back that comment.

"More people may die if we don't coordinate," Biden told reporters on Monday. "How do we get over 300 million Americans vaccinated? What's the game plan? It's a huge, huge, huge undertaking."

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told CNBC on Monday that between Moderna and Pfizer, there will be roughly 40 million doses of vaccine available by the end of this year, enough to inoculate about 20 million people, since both vaccines require two shots.

The goal is to provide enough coronavirus vaccine doses to all Americans who want to be vaccinated against the disease by the second quarter of 2021, Azar said. There are roughly 331 million Americans.

"It's going to take a while for the vaccine to be able to be available and distributed," Biden said, encouraging Americans to continue wearing face coverings in the meantime.

Moncef Slaoui, who runs the Trump administration's Operation Warp Speed Covid-19 vaccine program, told CNBC shortly after Biden's remarks that he will continue to work quickly toward developing and distributing an authorized vaccine.

"Since day one, our objective has been to go fast. And absolutely every day and every hour counts, and that's why we are where we are," Slaoui said on "Closing Bell." And clearly, we would hope there is no disruption because of the transition."

The president-elect also told reporters Monday that he "wouldn't hesitate" to get vaccinated against the coronavirus.

"It's important that people who are in the greatest need get it," Biden said during a press briefing. "I wouldn't hesitate to get the vaccine, but I also want to set an example."

On Monday, Moderna reported preliminary phase three trial data that showed its coronavirus vaccine is more than 94% effective in preventing Covid-19. Those results follow similar findings from Pfizer, which announced last week that early data shows its vaccine is more than 90% effective.

"I think we're on a clear path now. We're on a clear path with the international community and international leaders, and the scientific community have focused on these two vaccines," Biden said. "They appear to be ready for prime time, ready to be used. And if that continues along those roads, I would take the vaccine."

Biden also said that the only reason people are hesitant about the vaccine's safety is because of Trump, who once suggested the U.S. Food and Drug Administration could approve a vaccine before Election Day.

White House spokesman Brian Morgenstern told CNBC: "President Trump spearheaded Operation Warp Speed, empowering the scientific community to develop safe and effective vaccines five times faster than ever before in order to save millions of lives." Democrats have "been playing politics" by "sowing doubts about the vaccines," he wrote in an email.

Infectious disease experts have warned, however, that a Covid-19 vaccine won't help the U.S. much this winter since they'll be available in very limited quantities. The nation is reporting a weekly average of roughly 148,725 new Covid-19 cases every day, soaring to record highs as scientists warn Americans that the next few months of the pandemic could be the worst.

Biden applauded Republican leaders, including Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, for instituting mask mandates in their states as coronavirus outbreaks surge. With Thanksgiving only 10 days away, he also urged people to limit their holiday gatherings to a maximum of 10 people with everyone wearing masks and maintaining a safe distance.

"I just want to make sure that we're able to be together next Thanksgiving, next Christmas," Biden said. "It's an international health crisis."

— CNBC's Kevin Stankiewicz contributed to this report.

Correction: This story has been updated to reflect that Ron Klain appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday.

XCHG Acquires Venus, Launches Voice-Enabled Mobile Trading App - PRNewswire

Posted: 16 Nov 2020 07:44 PM PST

NEW YORK and SYDNEY, Nov. 16, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Xpansiv CBL Holding Group (XCHG) today announced the acquisition of Venus Technology Ventures (Venus) in order to provide mobile access to users of XCHG's water, environmental, and energy commodity trading platforms.

XCHG's customers will be able to connect to global commodity markets anytime, anywhere, reacting to real-time information through the newly developed H2OX App. The multi-language, conversational interface enables users to talk, text, or tap to access markets and initiate trades.

Initially launched for XCHG company H2OX, the leading Australian water exchange, the H2OX App has already facilitated first water trades, and will be available in U.S. energy and environmental markets later this year through CBL Markets (CBL), XCHG's spot commodity exchange.

In the Australian water market, the app functions like the H2OX exchange desktop platform, offering live bids and offers for water, complete price transparency, full order management, and the same fixed-fee structure for all transactions.

"The H2OX App will enable registered market participants to trade via their mobile devices from anywhere in the world at any time," said Lex Batters, H2OX CEO. "We believe this is the first native water trading app to be launched globally—another example of why H2OX is the driving force behind water market innovation. The H2OX App is also complementary with the recent Australian Competition & Consumer Commission inquiry into water markets, by making live water market pricing more accessible and transparent."

The app is another step in H2OX's mission of providing a level playing field for all market participants and establishes Australia as a leading player in global water markets.

"The acquisition of Venus enables XCHG to expand its product offering, providing customers with real-time market data via their mobile," said New York-based Nathan Rockliff, XCHG Chief Strategy Officer. "As environmental trading continues to grow into a global, around-the clock-market, mobile access to trading and live market data is vital."

Integrating Venus's technology will bolster the company's pre- and post-trade market data offerings via XSignals, launched earlier this year. XSignals provides live and historical market data to support trading, compliance, and risk-management decisions. XSignals translates Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) spot market price data into high-quality reference products, enabling global markets to accurately price ESG factors.

As part of the acquisition, Venus co-founders Vinnie Annunziata and Greg Stacey have joined XCHG. "We're thrilled to be part of this remarkable team," said Annunziata. "This is the global marketplace for data-driven, ESG-inclusive commodities, and by adding mobile access, we're empowering market participants to more accurately value energy, carbon, and water in an information-rich, resource-constrained world."

Annunziata's previous company, TradeCapture OTC, was purchased by the Intercontinental Exchange, and its mobile product Tap and Trade™ is now known as ICE mobile™.

Annunziata and Stacey bring more than 50 years of combined experience in commodities markets, including the creation of platforms used by physical market participants to perform trading, scheduling, inventory, credit, and risk-management functions.

This transaction marks another major development for XCHG as it embarks on a strategic acquisition path to advance its market position and accelerate the growth of global commodity products on its exchange platform. It follows the acquisition of the Environmental Management Account platform from APX, Inc. in December 2019.

Will Biden Absolve Trump's Criminality in the Name of 'National Unity'? - Byline Times

Posted: 16 Nov 2020 07:08 PM PST

CJ Werleman sees worrying signs from the past that the Democratic Party could decide to turn a blind eye to the current President's various misdemeanours in a desperate bid to move the country on from Trumpism

A clear majority of Americans and the rest of the world are celebrating Joe Biden's electoral defeat of President Donald Trump, a man who has done more damage to the United States' global reputation that any of his predecessors, according to recently published global surveys.

Hope in White House leadership and the mythical American Dream has been restored for now but, as it has often been said, the Oval Office is where hope comes to die – and to that end we shouldn't underestimate the Democratic Party's record of crushing hope with its on-the-job disappointment.

What the 80 million people who voted for Biden are hoping for more than anything is a national COVID-19 response plan – something, anything, that will reverse the upward spike in infections, hospitalisations and deaths. But likely to be next on their wish list is that Trump and members of his administration be held accountable for their criminality and corruption.

Investigations and Government-level inquiries into how Trump and his cronies used the White House to enrich themselves at taxpayer expense, while doing nothing to keep the rest of the country safe from sickness and death must be instigated.

But, standing in the way of this desired transparency and accountability, is Biden and the Democratic Party's reflexive 'get along to go along' mantra and arguably misguided belief that the Republican Party consists of good faith actors, capable of bipartisanship, honesty and fairness.

'The High Road'

If history is a guide, then Trump and his cohorts can count on President Biden to save him from investigations led by both the Department of Justice and Congressional Democrats in the name of 'national unity', 'national healing' and 'looking forward, not back'.

Expect to hear different reiterations of 'when they go low, we go high' and appeals to the 'high road'. But the moral and ethical high road leads only in one direction and that is towards justice and accountability. The high road is signposted by investigations, indictments, arrests, trials and imprisonment if the crime fits.

The low road is potholed by pardons in the name of 'national unity', 'national healing' and 'looking forward, not back' – the words used by President Barack Obama to defend his decision not to investigate and prosecute his predecessor, George W. Bush's, invasion of Iraq and alleged war crimes. They are also the same words used by Congressional Democrats in 1988 when they chose not to impeach President Ronald Reagan, despite evidence of his involvement in the Iran-Contra scandal.

In taking the low road, Obama created the space for the same actions to be repeated and the perpetrators to climb to the very top branches of the United States – including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a long-time advocate for the use of torture; CIA Director Gina Haspel, who helped President Bush implement 'black sites' to torture US detainees; and Trump's former National Security Advisor Ambassador John Bolton, a leading advocate of the Iraq War.

In an interview he gave just days before being sworn in as President in 2009, Obama said he had "a belief that we need to look forward as opposed to looking backwards", adding that he didn't want members of the military and intelligence community to "spend all their time looking over their shoulders" from Department of Justice investigators.

"A new president doesn't want to look vengeful and the last thing a new administration wants to do is spend its time and energy rehashing the perceived sins of the old one," Bradford A. Berenson, a lawyer and Harvard law classmate of Obama, told The New York Times the same year.

But that is not how transparency and accountability in government is meant to work. To allow unlawful actions to go uninvestigated and unpunished only serves to rehabilitate the reputation of the perpetrators and ensure that a repeat of the same behaviour in the future. As the philosopher George Santayana famously warned: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Charges

The concern is that Democrats remain locked in a form of magical thinking, believing that somehow their good faith and gestures of reaching across the aisle will be graciously received and rewarded by their Republican counterparts on Capitol Hill – despite all evidence to the contrary.

If Republican law-makers had audio recordings of an outgoing Democratic president saying he deliberately downplayed the country's response to the Coronavirus pandemic – resulting in the deaths of 250,000 Americans – it is likely that they would stop at nothing to drag every member of their administration into an endless array of public hearings.

Considering that Congressional Republicans held seven investigations into the deaths of four Americans killed in the middle of a foreign war zone – Benghazi, Libya – to hurt the then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's presidential ambitions, one can only imagine their merciless and take-no-prisoners approach to investigating and prosecuting those responsible for 250,000 deaths at home.

"They'll have plenty of potential charges to choose from," observed Jeff Wise on Trump's misdemeanours for New York Magazine. "Both Mueller and the Senate Intelligence Committee – a Republican-led panel – have extensively documented how Trump committed obstruction of justice (18 U.S. Code § 73), lied to investigators (18 U.S. Code § 1001), and conspired with Russian intelligence to commit an offence against the United States (18 U.S. Code § 371). All three crimes carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison – per charge."

As noted by Wise and other legal experts, federal prosecutors could be ready to indict Trump on one or more of these in the first three months of the Biden presidency.

Exposing the lurid details of Trump and his family's criminality, corruption and incompetence while in the Oval Office will not only give the country the transparency and accountability it seems to be yearning for, it would also help restore faith and trust in the White House, going a long way to vanquishing Trump and the 'Make America Great Again' mob for good.

Let's hope Biden doesn't confuse the low road for the high road.

Snow Man主演「滝沢歌舞伎 ZERO 2020 The Movie」

Giovanni Reyna scores first goal for U.S. Men's National Team in friendly vs. Panama - Yahoo Sports

Posted: 16 Nov 2020 05:42 PM PST

Gio Reyna scores first goal for USMNT in friendly vs. Panama originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Move over, Christian Pulisic. There's another young sensation for the United States Men's National Team, and his name is Giovanni Reyna.

In the United States' friendly against Panama on Monday, Reyna scored what many Americans hope is his first of many goals for the senior national team.

The strike came on an 18-yard free-kick just outside the penalty box, where Reyna was able to curl the ball under the Panama wall, beating the keeper into the lower right corner of the goal.

Reyna's goal made him the third-youngest scorer in USMNT history, as the strike came just three days after his 18th birthday and in just his second international cap.

After falling behind early, Reyna's goal would be the first of three first-half United States goals as the Americans took a 3-1 lead into the halftime break.

Reyna wasn't the only American to net his first national team goal. Nicholas Gioacchini scored in just his second international cap as well.

Reyna, who joined the German side Borussia Dortmund last year, is expected to be one of the leaders of the U.S. Men's National Team for years, along with Pulisic, 22, and other top young players like Weston McKennie (Juventus), 22, Sergino Dest (Barcelona), 20, and Chris Richards (Bayern Munich), 20.

All but Pulisic, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, played against Panama on Monday.

Sci-Tech boys soccer scores three second-half goals, defeats Duggan 3-0 - masslive.com

Posted: 16 Nov 2020 05:42 PM PST

SPRINGFIELD - In an unorthodox game that saw the Sci-Tech and Duggan boys soccer teams play seven-on-seven with 10 minute quarters Monday, the CyberCats came away with a 3-0 win behind a trio of second-half goals.

With 38 seconds left in the third quarter, Sci-Tech finally broke the deadlock when freshman Omar Al Yasine received a through ball from a teammate and calmly placed a shot past the Duggan goalkeeper and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

It was a long time coming for the CyberCats, who created several opportunities in the first half prior to the opening goal, but struggled to find their finishing touch.

Playing under rare circumstances, Sci-Tech coach Kaela Saltmarsh acknowledged the satisfaction her players felt after recording a win in a season that many were unsure would happen.

"They're proud of themselves," Saltmarsh said. "They worked hard. They didn't think that they were gonna have a soccer season and then they were able to get out, move, play with each other and I think they look forward to it.

"They go to school so they can play sports and they were able to do that this year so that was just good to see."

The CyberCats doubled their lead shortly into the final 10 minutes of play when another freshman, Alex Perez Morales, made a great individual effort along the Jayhawks' goal line, using fancy footwork to dodge Duggan defenders before poking home a shot with 7:40 left.

Sci-Tech continued to press Duggan offensively, ultimately finding a third goal on a breakaway score for senior Abdulazeez Aljashaam with 2:26 remaining in the game.

Watching from the sidelines, one of the more rewarding aspects for Saltmarsh was just seeing her team enjoy playing the game with each other in an abbreviated season.

"Just seeing them having fun, seeing them smile, seeing them work together and just progress," Salatmarsh said. "It's important to get them outside moving, just playing and moving the ball and getting together with one another. It builds sportsmanship.

"They've gotten so much better, even if it was five games but just from the first game to now, they're comfortable with each other and more confident out on the field so that's just nice to see," she added.

Despite being on the losing end of Monday's contest, Jayhawks coach Hunter Geoffroy reflected on the importance of not focusing on the results, but rather on improving themselves as players.

"They're learning something and having fun," Geoffroy said. "I don't care if they win or lose, I told them at halftime whether they win or lose, they're doing a hell of a lot better than half the seasons they've played before.

"I compliment everything they do. It shows me that they're learning something from me as a coach. As players they all congratulate each other, they all talk so it means a lot to me."

Duggan junior Juan DeJesus piggybacked off his coach, expressing his appreciation of getting to play a season, albeit a shorter one than he had hoped for.

"When I heard our season was going to be out in half I was a little upset," DeJesus said. "We finally had a consistent coach, for the last couple of years we haven't had a consistent coach. We're going through it, we're flowing great, it kind of sucks but I'm happy we got a chance to still play.

"Being with my team is the best. I hope to finally do something with any type of sport I play, whether it be soccer or wrestling. I just love being out here with my team."

Zinchenko hits out after receiving death threats following error for Ukraine - Goal

Posted: 16 Nov 2020 05:42 PM PST

The Manchester City man was robbed of possession by Germany midfielder Leon Goretzka before former team-mate Leroy Sane scored

Manchester City defender Oleksandr Zinchenko has revealed he and his family were sent death threats following the mistake he made during Ukraine's defeat to Germany.

Andriy Shevchenko's Ukraine are batting to avoid relegation from the top tier of the UEFA Nations League, but their chances were dealt a blow when they lost 3-1 to Germany on Saturday.

Germany were behind in the game to an early goal from Roman Yaremchuk, but the match pivoted when Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane equalised after Zinchenko had been robbed of possession by Leon Goretzka.

Two goals from Chelsea striker Timo Werner sealed the 3-1 win for Germany, and Zinchenko incurred the wrath of some Ukraine fans.

Goal 50 Revealed: The best 50 players in the world

It would appear some of the criticism crossed a line, as Zinchenko took to Instagram to say: "Reading all the dirt that poured on me and my family after yesterday's game, once again convinced what kind of people we have and how they can support.

"Fortunately or unfortunately, the demand is already such that it is no longer permissible to make mistakes on someone else's half of the field.

"For losing the ball on someone else's half of the field, I repeat, people wish you and your family death.

"Feeling responsible for the defeat, I turn to adequate fans, which we, unfortunately, have little left. The final is waiting for all of us with you, be with the team."

The defeat leaves Ukraine in third place in Group A4, with six points to their name. While relegation is possible, their fate is in their own hands.

Ukraine's final game of the pool is away to Switzerland on Tuesday. The Swiss are bottom of the standings on three points and a draw or better would ensure Ukraine avoid relegation.

Switzerland need to beat Ukraine 1-0 or by two or more goals to avoid relegation.

Zinchenko's focus will be solely on avoiding defeat in Switzerland, but following the game in Lucerne he can turn his attentions to domestic duties with Manchester City.

The pressure will be just as high domestically, as City return to Premier League action away at Tottenham on Saturday.

Keshon Artis, Zion DeBose Opt Out for Virginia Tech Football - 247Sports

On Monday, Virginia Tech Hokies Head Coach Justin Fuente confirmed that two reserve defensive players have opted out for the remainder of the season. Both Redshirt Junior Defensive End Zion DeBose and Redshirt Sophomore Linebacker Keshon Artis will not participate with the Virginia Tech Hokies Football Program for the remainder of the 2020 season. The Hokies have three games remaining before concluding their 2020 modified regular season.

The Virginia Tech Head Coach touched on the two players and spoke to their conversations.

"The conversation with them was like, classes are going to go all online at Thanksgiving and they would, I would imagine, just stay home," Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has given legitimate cause for players to opt out of their athletic duties in order to prioritize their health. The transition to online only classes suggests that both DeBose and Artis could complete their academic responsibilities from their respective homes without the compromise of risking their well-being. Both student-athletes will have the opportunity to retain their eligibility from the 2020 season.

Zion DeBose, a 6-foot-1 inch 245-pound Defensive End, has appeared in 17 games, including 4 games in 2020 for the Virginia Tech Hokies. In total, he has compiled 13 tackes, 1.5 tackles for loss and 1.0 sacks in his career in Blacksburg. The Redshirt Junior Defensive Lineman recorded his first career sack against N.C. State in Virginia Tech's season opener. He then missed two games against Duke and North Carolina, before contributing against Boston College. He last played against Louisville in the teams 42-35 victory.

After redshirting in 2017, DeBose played in all 13 games for the Hokies in 2018, primarily on Special Teams. He missed the entirety of 2019 due to injury. The North Carolina native was listed as the No. 852 overall prospect per the 247Sports Composite Rankings in the class of 2017. He was rated as the No. 49 Weak-Side Defensive End nationally and the No. 28 prospect in North Carolina.

Keshon Artis, a 6-foot 244-pound Linebacker, has appeared in 22 games, including 7 of 8 games in 2020 for the Virginia Tech Hokies. He has compiled 6 total tackles in his career, including a season high of 2 total tackles against Boston College. The Redshirt Sophomore Linebacker played in 11 games as a true freshman, predominantly on Special Teams. As a sophomore, Artis opted for a redshirt season after playing sparingly in the team's first four games.

The Oscar Smith High School Alum is a Virginia native and was regarded as the No. 522 overall prospect by the 247Sports Composite Rankings coming out of the 2018 Recruiting Class. He was listed as the No. 26 Inside Linebacker prospect nationally and the No. 11 player in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Study on benefits, costs helped govt firm up RCEP stand - The Indian Express

Posted: 16 Nov 2020 05:08 PM PST

Written by Anil Sasi , Prabha Raghavan | New Delhi | November 17, 2020 4:26:42 am
RCEP: Door still open for India, may take part in meets as 'observer'An official said that India was not averse to trade pacts, given that negotiations for some 20 trade pacts with countries and groups of countries have been initiated by it. However, the government has objections to joining RCEP "in its current form".

An internal assessment of India's bilateral free trade agreements with nine countries, including five signatories of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), played a pivotal role in the government firming its position against joining the mega trade pact. The assessment showed a "moderate utilisation rate" of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) over a five-year period, and a trade deficit for India in most cases, save in regard to SAARC nations, The Indian Express has learnt.

While the remaining RCEP members went ahead and inked a deal on Sunday — a little over a year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India was walking out of negotiations citing "significant outstanding issues" — the bloc has made it clear that the door for India to return to the negotiating table will remain open.

ALSO READ | RCEP: Door still open for India, may take part in meets as 'observer'

However, India's escalating political tensions with China over the last year are seen as having pushed up the entry barrier for the government. Also, given that India already has bilateral pacts with a number of RCEP members including the ASEAN bloc, South Korea, and Malaysia — and is negotiating agreements with some of the remaining RCEP members such as Thailand, Australia and New Zealand — the cost of opting out of the deal is being seen as not outweighing the benefits of keeping China's looming presence at bay.

Officials also pointed to work that is underway to activate the trilateral Supply Chain Resilience Initiative (SCRI) with Japan and Australia that aims to increase collaboration and cut the dependency on Chinese inputs. Also, there is a growing view that it would serve India's interest to invest strongly in negotiating bilateral agreements with the United States and the European Union, both of which are currently work-in-progress.

EDITORIAL | Trade lifts all boats, New Delhi must get inside the RCEP tent at the earliest opportune moment.

However, it has been conveyed to other signatories of RCEP that 'Act East' was the bedrock of India's economic policy, and that its engagement with ASEAN countries and other trading partners would continue, a government official involved in the exercise told The Indian Express.

The government's assessment of various bilateral trade agreements has revealed that the growth in trade (CAGR) with partners over the last five financial years was a modest 7.1 per cent. While "there has been growth rate in both imports from and exports to these FTA partners", the "utilisation rate" of FTAs both for India and its partners has been "moderate" across sectors, according to this study, which covers pacts signed with Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Bhutan, Nepal, Republic of Korea and Malaysia.

The only exceptions to these findings include sectors such as iron and steel for the India-Korea Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and India-Japan CEPA; plastics in the case of the India-Singapore Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement; and automobiles and automotive components in the case of the India-Malaysia CECA. What has also been mentioned, officials said, is the lopsided trade deficit against India in most of these deals.

Where RCEP members are concerned, India's deficits have marginally reduced in most cases. However, its total deficit with ASEAN as a bloc has increased between 2018-19 and 2019-20, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The pullout from RCEP has come at a time when India is reviewing existing trade agreements based on "demand from domestic stakeholders" and "other inputs".

Two reviews of the India Singapore CECA have been completed; the India-Bhutan Agreement on Trade Commerce and Transit was renewed in 2016; and the India-Nepal Treaty of Trade was extended in 2016. Eight rounds of negotiations have been completed for the review of the India-Korea CEPA, which commenced in 2016. India has taken up the review of the India-Japan CEPA and India-ASEAN FTA with its trading partners.

While the possibility of India joining RCEP as an observer is not being ruled out, officials indicated that "the current structure of RCEP" did not reflect the RCEP Guiding Principles or address the outstanding issues and concerns of India.

An official said that India was not averse to trade pacts, given that negotiations for some 20 trade pacts with countries and groups of countries have been initiated by it. However, the government has objections to joining RCEP "in its current form".

"China has been a central figure in the East Asian region and, therefore, would have a major role in driving RCEP. However, there are several measures that India has taken after the Chinese aggression earlier this year, many of which would sit uncomfortably with its commitments under RCEP, should it join the agreement," said trade expert Biswajit Dhar, a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University's Centre for Economic Studies and Planning.

"The reasons for which India walked out of RCEP last year have not changed. They haven't improved and, in fact, have gotten worse, because there was earlier only an economic threat from China. Now, it exists on the political front as well," Prof Dhar told The Indian Express.

First Central African refugees return from DRC since COVID-19 outbreak - UNHCR

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has helped hundreds of refugees from the Central African Republic (CAR) to return home in recent days – the first such move since the COVID-19 pandemic forced border closures.

The voluntary repatriation operation of refugees from CAR began in November 2019 but was put on hold in March 2020 as the two countries had closed their borders to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Now the border closure has been lifted to facilitate the voluntary returns, which UNHCR hopes will be ongoing.

Some 474 refugees left Mole camp to head to Zongo in South Ubangi Province in northern DRC in two convoys of 20 vehicles including six trucks and three buses since 10 November. They continued their journey by boat with a 20-minute ride on the Ubangi River to Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic.

"The coronavirus pandemic had halted refugee dreams to return home, like many other human aspirations," said UNHCR Deputy Representative in DRC, Pierre Atchom. "This resumption of refugee returns marks another chapter in the lives of many refugees. They can go home, embracing their country – putting behind their life in exile.''

With gradual improvements of the security situation in areas in Bangui and in the regions of Lobaye and Ombella M'poko of CAR, over 15,000 refugees in North and South Ubangi Provinces have so far have signed up for voluntary repatriation.

Voluntary repatriation, when conditions allow, remains the preferred solution for many forced to flee their homes. UNHCR plans to assist some 4,000 people by the end of 2020 – bringing the total to 7,000 since July 2019.

To limit the risk of contagion during the return operation, UNHCR and its partners strengthened regular health and sanitization measures. These included provision of masks and temperature screening as well as the installation of additional hand-washing stations. The number of refugees per convoy was also reduced to 65 individuals to allow for distancing.

Over 600,000 refugees from CAR live in the DRC and other neighbouring countries. However, additional financial support will be needed to continue the voluntary returns programme.
