'I don't know the rules anymore!' - De Bruyne questions law changes after Man City defeat - Goal

Posted: 21 Nov 2020 09:42 PM PST

The Belgium international believes too many changes are being made to football after a frustrating loss

Kevin De Bruyne claimed he is baffled by the current interpretation of the handball rule after Manchester City once again fell foul of VAR against Tottenham.

Spurs dug in for a 2-0 win thanks to goals in each half from Son Heung-min and substitute Giovani Lo Celso, moving them to the top of the Premier League table after a performance which delighted boss Jose Mourinho.

By contrast, Mourinho's old rival Pep Guardiola finds his side languishing in 10th with 12 points from eight matches, although they were entitled to be frustrated when a marginal handball call went against Gabriel Jesus when he set up Aymeric Laporte for what briefly looked to be a first-half equaliser.

Referee Mike Dean consulted the pitchside monitor, with the replay showing the ball brushed Jesus' bicep on the hem of his shirt sleeve.

Goal 50 Revealed: The best 50 players in the world

The latest guidance on handball from the International Football Association Board (IFAB) stipulates the "T-shirt line" should be used to differentiate between where the shoulder ends and the arm begins in terms of legal and illegal playing of the ball.

"I don't know the rules anymore honestly," De Bruyne told Sky Sports, with the same combination of Laporte and Jesus denied by VAR when the sides drew 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium last season – a match that followed the remarkable drama of the sides' 2019 Champions League quarter-final.

"I thought if it's above the arm here [above the bottom of the sleeve] that it's not handball anymore. Everybody knows that it hits him here. I don't know the rules.

"If you will listen tomorrow or the day after they will come on whatever channel and the referee will say it's a good decision, so it really doesn't matter.

"I've been playing professional football for 12 years and in the first nine years there were no rule changes. Now there are a lot of rule changes.

"I don't know why. Football is a nice game. The people making the rule changes need to be in the game."

Kevin De Bruyne Gabriel Jesus Mike Dean Tottenham vs Man City Premier League 2020-21

Another familiar aspect of City's performance was combining a dominance of possession with a lack of cutting edge in attack and defensive fragility.

The visitors had 22 shots, with half of those blocked, to Tottenham's four. Son's goal was Spurs' only attempt of the first half and City had accounted for 66.4 per cent of possession by full-time.

Guardiola highlighted Laporte's decision to charge out of the defensive line to challenge Harry Kane in the build-up to an opening goal when Rodri and Joao Cancelo also appeared culpable, but De Bruyne believes he and his attacking colleagues must take a significant share of the blame.

"I think we played well but we missed that cutting edge," he said.

"To keep Tottenham to about three or four chances, that's quite good. But if you're not sharp enough in front of goal, which is happening lately, it's not enough."

Jesus and fellow striker Sergio Aguero have spent time on the sidelines this season, with the latter on the bench in north London alongside Raheem Sterling, who suffered an injury while on England duty.

"Obviously it's been up and down with the players going in and out," De Bruyne added. "It's very difficult for players to come back from injury and be sharp. It's difficult to find consistency.

"I think the first two thirds of the pitch we played well, but the end needs to be sharper. That will come, hopefully sooner than later."

Trump suffers double blow in bid to overturn US election results - Al Jazeera English

Posted: 21 Nov 2020 09:08 PM PST

US President Donald Trump's desperate bid to overturn the November 3 election results was dealt a double blow on Friday after officials in the battleground state of Georgia certified Joe Biden's win and top Republican legislators in Michigan said they had no information that would warrant reversing the outcome of the vote in that state.

Biden, a Democrat, is preparing to take office on January 20, but Trump, a Republican, has refused to concede and his team is seeking to invalidate or reverse the results through lawsuits, recounts and undermining the certification of results in some states, claiming – without proof – widespread voter fraud.

Trump's critics have called the effort an unprecedented push by a sitting president to subvert the will of the voters.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger announced on Friday that a manual recount and audit of all ballots cast in the southern state had determined that Biden was the winner.

Biden is the first Democrat to carry Georgia since 1992.

"The numbers reflect the verdict of the people, not a decision by the secretary of state's office or courts, or of either campaign," Raffensperger, a Republican and Trump supporter, told reporters. Official figures on the Secretary of State's Office website showed Biden winning the state by 12,670 votes.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, a Republican, said he was required by law to formalise the certification of the results, "which paves the way for the Trump campaign to pursue other legal options in a separate recount if they choose". But he also said the audit showed some errors in the original vote count.

Trump had earlier expressed dismay, saying on Twitter that Georgia officials were refusing "to let us look at signatures which would expose hundreds of thousands of illegal ballots" and give him and his party "a BIG VICTORY".

The president provided no evidence to back up his claim.

Michigan backs Biden win

Trump, on Friday, also summoned a delegation of Republican legislators from Michigan, including the state's Senate majority leader and House speaker, in an apparent extension of his efforts to persuade judges and election officials in the state to set aside Biden's 154,000-vote margin of victory and declare him the winner.

But in a statement issued after the meeting in the Oval Office, Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and House of Representatives Speaker Lee Chatfield said they had faith in a review of Michigan's elections process that is being conducted by state legislators.

"We have not yet been made aware of any information that would change the outcome of the election in Michigan and as legislative leaders, we will follow the law and follow the normal process regarding Michigan's electors, just as we have said throughout this election," their statement said.

The White House had no immediate comment.

Nationally, Biden won nearly six million more votes than Trump, a difference of 3.8 percentage points. But the outcome of the election is determined in the Electoral College, where each state's electoral votes, based largely on population, are typically awarded to the winner of a state's popular vote.

Biden leads by 306 electoral votes to Trump's 232 as states work to certify their results at least six days before the Electoral College convenes on December 14.

Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher, reporting from the White House, said Trump was "running out of room and running out of days".

"The Trump campaign has lost 33 court cases, and it's becoming more and more difficult to see how Donald Trump can possibly overturn the election. Three states will meet to certify the results on Monday – Michigan, Pennsylvania and Arizona. The best hope that he's got in any of those is that the Republican-controlled legislatures don't agree to certify the results. But that seems highly unlikely."

The Associated Press reported that Trump was also considering inviting legislators from Pennsylvania to the White House, while former Trump National Security Adviser John Bolton tweeted that the "president could be calling Republican legislators and others to the White House to try and squeeze them".

Bolton added: "Republicans at all levels – state, county, election boards, legislatures – must resist this political pressure."

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters that the meeting with Michigan officials was "not an advocacy meeting" and insisted Trump "routinely meets" with legislators from across the country. But such meetings are, in fact, rare, particularly as Trump has maintained a low profile since the election.

For the Trump campaign to succeed in the effort to overturn the results in battleground states, it would need to convince three state legislatures to intervene against vote counts as they stand now, but then also have those actions upheld by Congress and, almost certainly, the US Supreme Court.

'Put the country first'

Pressure for Trump to start the formal transition process mounted, with a few more Republicans voicing doubts about Trump's claims of fraudulent voting.

Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, who is retiring at the end of the year, said Biden had a "very good chance" of becoming the next president and that the loser of the election should "put the country first".

There is a "right way and a wrong way" for Trump to contest what he sees as election irregularities, Susan Collins, the Maine senator, said in a statement. "The right way is to compile the evidence and mount legal challenges in our courts. The wrong way is to attempt to pressure state election officials."

Republican Senator Mitt Romney launched a withering attack on Trump for pressuring local officials, saying, "It is difficult to imagine a worse, more undemocratic action by a sitting American president."

Still, the vast majority of Republicans in Congress have yet to acknowledge Biden's win publicly.

Al Jazeera's Fisher blamed the Republican's reticence on the president's "takeover" of the party.

"He has the power of his base behind him. He has the power of social media, he could make or break careers, even that of senators. Remember, Trump went after Jeb Bush in the early days of the primaries and took him out as a force. This was the guy that everyone thought would be the potential nominee," Fisher explained.

"He's got a great deal of power and so no one is going to him just yet and said, you know what, you've run out of angles and there's not much more you can do and it is bad for the country. Very few in the Republican Party seem ready at this stage to stand up to Trump."

U.S. judge calls Trump claim challenging Biden win in Pennsylvania 'Frankenstein's Monster' - Reuters

Posted: 21 Nov 2020 09:08 PM PST

(Reuters) - A federal judge on Saturday dismissed a lawsuit critical to President Donald Trump's long-shot bid to overturn his Nov. 3 election loss to Democratic President-elect Joe Biden, calling his legal claim a "Frankenstein's Monster."

The Trump campaign had sought to prevent state officials from certifying the results of the election in the state.

U.S. District Judge Matthew Brann in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, described the case as "strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations."

Brann said that he "has no authority to take away the right to vote of even a single person, let alone millions of citizens."

The lawsuit before Brann was filed on Nov. 9 and had alleged inconsistent treatment by county election officials of mail-in ballots. Some counties notified voters that they could fix minor defects such as missing "secrecy envelopes" while others did not.

"This claim, like Frankenstein's Monster, has been haphazardly stitched together," wrote Brann.

Brann, nominated by former President Barack Obama, is a Republican and, according to his biography, a member of the Federalist Society, a group of conservative and libertarian lawyers, law students and scholars.

Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani said in a statement he was disappointed with the ruling and will appeal. "Today's decision turns out to help us in our strategy to get expeditiously to the U.S. Supreme Court," he said.

The campaign will ask the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia to review the ruling on an accelerated timetable, according to Giuliani. A majority of that circuit's judges were nominated by Republican presidents. Four were nominated by Trump.

For Trump to have any hope of overturning the election, he needs to reverse the outcome in Pennsylvania, which is scheduled to be certified by state officials on Monday.

"Today's ruling is a victory for the rule of law, and for the voters of Pennsylvania, whom the Trump campaign sought to disenfranchise on the flimsiest legal theory imaginable," wrote election law scholar Rick Hasen on Twitter.

The Trump campaign and its supporters have filed dozens of lawsuits in six closely contested states. The campaign's only victories extended the Election Day voting hours at a handful of polling places in Nevada and set aside some provisional ballots in Pennsylvania, according to court records.

Attempts to thwart the certification of the election have failed in courts in Georgia, Michigan and Arizona.

In the Pennsylvania case, Brann also denied a campaign request to amend the suit to claim violations of the U.S. Constitution. The campaign wanted Brann to allow Pennsylvania's Republican-controlled state legislature to appoint electors who would back for Trump at the Electoral College vote on Dec. 14.

Under Pennsylvania law, the candidate who wins the popular vote in the state gets all the state's electoral votes.

A presidential candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win the election, and Biden leads in the electoral vote count by 306-232.

Electoral votes are allocated among the 50 states and the District of Columbia based roughly on population.

In blistering ruling, judge throws out Trump suit in Pa. - WCAX

Posted: 21 Nov 2020 09:08 PM PST

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A federal judge issued a scathing order Saturday dismissing the Trump campaign's futile effort to block the certification of votes in Pennsylvania, shooting down claims of widespread irregularities with mail-in ballots.

The case was always a long shot to stop President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration, but it was President Donald Trump's best hope to affect the election results through the courts, mostly because of the number of electoral votes, 20, at stake in Pennsylvania. His personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, stepped into a courtroom for the first time in decades to argue the case this past week.

U.S. District Court Judge Matthew Brann wrote in his order that Trump had asked the court to disenfranchise almost 7 million voters.

"One might expect that when seeking such a startling outcome, a plaintiff would come formidably armed with compelling legal arguments and factual proof of rampant corruption," Brann wrote, so much that the court would have no option but to stop the certification even though it would impact so many people. "That has not happened."

Even if he'd won the Pennsylvania case, Trump would have needed to win other lawsuits in other states where he'd also asked to delay certification. The campaign peppered battlegrounds states with litigation in the days after the election alleging widespread election fraud without proof, but the majority of those cases have already been dismissed.

The president has taken his effort to subvert the results of the 2020 election beyond the courtroom in recent days, straight to local lawmakers. Some Trump allies have expressed hope that state lawmakers could intervene in selecting Republican electors.

With that in mind Trump invited Michigan legislators to the White House on Friday, hoping that an Oval Office meeting would persuade them to set aside the popular vote favoring Biden by more than 154,000. But the lawmakers issued a statement after the meeting that they would follow the law and "normal process" on electors. Trump was said to be considering extending a similar invitation to lawmakers from Pennsylvania.

Time is running out for Trump and his campaign, as states certify their results one after another showing that Biden won the requisite 270 Electoral College votes to take office.

Brann ruled that Pennsylvania officials can certify election results that currently show Biden winning the state by more than 80,000 votes. He said the Trump campaign presented "strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations ... unsupported by evidence."

"In the United States of America, this cannot justify the disenfranchisement of a single voter, let alone all the voters of its sixth most populated state," the opinion said. "Our people, laws, and institutions demand more."

Trump tweeted after the ruling that he couldn't understand why Biden was forming a Cabinet when the president's investigators had found "hundreds of thousands of fraudulent votes," a baseless claim for which Trump has supplied no evidence.

Giuliani and a Trump campaign lawyer said in a statement that they welcomed the dismissal because it would allow them to appeal up to the U.S. Supreme Court faster, where Trump has repeatedly said he feels he has sympathetic justices. But, the justices heard a case from the state before the election, over a three-day extension on mail-in ballots, and allowed the extension over the objections of the GOP.

Sen. Pat Toomey, a Pennsylvania Republican who had a hand in placing Brann on the bench during the Obama administration, said the ruling showed Trump had exhausted all possible legal avenues in the state and went on to congratulate Biden on his victory. He called Brann "a longtime conservative Republican whom I know to be a fair and unbiased jurist."

Giuliani, a former federal prosecutor and New York mayor, showed his rustiness during the hearing this week by tripping himself up over the meaning of "opacity," mistaking the judge for a federal judge in a separate district and provoking an opposing lawyer.

Giuliani repeatedly contended in court that it was illegal for counties to help people vote. Opposing lawyer Mark Aronchick suggested Giuliani must not know the Pennsylvania election code.

The Trump-aligned attorneys had argued that the U.S. Constitution's guarantee of equal protection under the law was violated when Pennsylvania counties took different approaches to notifying voters before the election about technical problems with their submitted mail-in ballots.

The judge dismissed the argument entirely.

Pennsylvania Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar and the seven Biden-majority counties that the campaign sued had argued throwing out the popular vote over isolated allegations of mail-in fraud was far too extreme, particularly after most of them have been tallied.

"There is no justification on any level for the radical disenfranchisement they seek," Boockvar's lawyers wrote in a brief filed Thursday.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, tweeted shortly after Brann's ruling that "another one bites the dust."

"These claims were meritless from the start and for an audience of one," Shapiro said in a statement. "The will of the people will prevail. These baseless lawsuits need to end."

Counties must certify their results to Boockvar by Monday, after which she will make her own certification. Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf will notify the winning candidate's electors they should appear to vote in the Capitol on Dec. 14.

West Omaha mobile home tenants told to make repairs or face eviction - WOWT

Posted: 21 Nov 2020 08:44 PM PST

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - An anxious start to the holiday season for dozens of mobile home residents in northwest Omaha. The owner of Maplewood Estates has issued an ultimatum.

The landlord's notice for the tenants at 129th Street and West Maple was taped to the door of Dan Jackson Thursday night, telling him to leave and take his house with him.

"Oh yeah, they want this property because they can put a bigger home on it and charge more money," Jackson said.

Many of the estimated 400 mobile homeowners received notice they have to make repairs. Anything from removing temporary steps to painting or replacing skirting and siding.

"When we're in the middle of a COVID virus pandemic and they're slapping this against all these people. A lot of them aren't working and I'm on Social Security," said resident Linda Ishaii.

If repairs aren't made by about Dec. 18, the lease will be terminated on the lot where their mobile home sits.

The letter tells Jackson the latticework on three sides of his carport has to be torn down and replaced with solid wood even those he says it's stood this way more than five years.

"I don't have the funds to do it," he said.

But in another part of Maplewood Estates, Cookie Hubbs says she'll gladly follow the order to replace her back stairs.

"I definitely think it's reasonable because number one it's what you agreed to when you signed the document and number two it enhances the ability to have better tenants, people who aren't going to trash their homes," Hubbs said.

The mobile home park office was closed due to a recent COVID-19 exposure so 6 News called the number listed.

"I'll have somebody give you a call back."

It's a tough call for many residents who are retired and on fixed incomes.

A 30-day notice to make repairs listed by the landlord or they violated the lot lease and face eviction. These mobile homeowners say the timing and tone don't fit the holiday spirit.

"I absolutely believe we're being bullied," Ishaii said.

6 News did not recieve a call back from the mobile home park owners yet who are located out of state. Many of the tenants pay about $500 a month for lot rent.

G-20 Summit Opens With Calls For United Response To Pandemic - NPR

This year's G-20 summit began Saturday with a call for world leaders to mount a united response to the coronavirus pandemic.

In opening remarks, King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, which hosted the virtual two-day meeting, applauded initiatives by G-20 nations to invest $21 billion in global efforts to combat the pandemic and $11 trillion to bolster the global economy.

King Salman urged leaders to expand efforts to provide access to vaccines and treatments, as well as buoy the economies of developing nations wracked by the economic impacts of COVID-19.

"We have a duty to rise to the challenge together during this summit and give a strong message of hope and reassurance to our peoples through adopting policies to mitigate this crisis," King Salman said in his remarks.

Alongside the main summit, world leaders met for a side event called "Pandemic Preparedness and Response." Other leaders reiterated King Salman's sentiments for a concerted response to the effects of the pandemic.

"The only effective response to the pandemic will be a coordinated, global one, based on solidarity," said French President Emmanuel Macron. German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the pandemic "a global challenge" that could "only be overcome with a global effort."

This is the second time this year that the G-20 has met virtually to discuss the pandemic. Back in March, The Associated Press reports, leaders held an emergency meeting as the pandemic began to take hold.

This time around, as G-20 leaders meet, countries around the globe are seeing surges in new infections, with confirmed cases approaching 58 million, according to Johns Hopkins University. Governments have reimposed lockdowns and curfews.

The World Health Organization said Friday that more cases have been reported in the past four weeks than the first six months of the pandemic.

At least three of the participants in this year's summit had been diagnosed with the virus: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and President Trump.

A day ahead of the summit, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said another $28 billion would be required to mass manufacture, procure and distribute coronavirus vaccines around the globe.

Guterres called on G-20 nations to join the international initiative to distribute vaccines worldwide, called COVAX. President Trump declined to join COVAX. President-elect Joe Biden has not said whether he will join it.

In a statement, the White House said Trump highlighted to his fellow world leaders at the G-20 summit that the U.S. had "marshaled every resource at its disposal to respond to the crisis."

Trump loses lawsuit that sought to block Pennsylvania win for Biden - CNBC

Posted: 21 Nov 2020 07:08 PM PST

Jonathan Ernst | Reuters

A federal judge in Pennsylvania on Saturday dismissed a lawsuit by President Donald Trump's campaign that sought to block that state's certification of millions of voters, which is expected to confirm a win for President-elect Joe Biden there.

The judge's scathing decision is a crippling blow to Trump's already extremely long-shot bid to invalidate enough ballots in enough states to reverse the former Democratic vice president Biden's victory in the national presidential election, whose outcome is determined by the Electoral College.

The Trump campaign and its allies now have lost or withdrawn more than 30 lawsuits that were part of that effort.

U.S. District Judge Matthew Brann, in his written decision, said that the campaign's lawyers, led by former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, failed to present "compelling legal arguments and factual proof of rampant corruption" in their unprecedented bid to invalidate millions of ballots.

"Instead, this Court has been presented with strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations, unpled in the operative complaint and unsupported by the evidence," Brann fumed.

"In the United States of America, this cannot justify the disenfranchisement of a single voter, let alone all the voters of its sixth most populated state. Our people, laws, and institutions demand more."

At one point, the judge compared the lawsuit's claim that voters had been denied equal protection in how their ballots were counted to "Frankenstein's Monster," since it was "haphazardly stitched together" from two different theories in an effort to avoid having them separately dismissed because of legal precedent.

Brann's ruling made moot the question of whether he would bother to hold an evidentiary hearing in the case.

The campaign had claimed that voters in Pennsylvania were denied their constitutional right to equal protection under the law by the fact that some counties in the state, but not all, permitted voters who had mailed in their ballots to "cure" problems with those ballots by casting a provisional ballot.

The Trump campaign's lawyers said they would seek an expedited appeal of Brann's decision at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. They also said they believed his ruling would "help us in our strategy" to get their claims heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.

"Although we fully disagree with this opinion, we're thankful to the Obama-appointed judge for making this anticipated decision quickly, rather than simply trying to run out the clock," said Giulani and Jenna Ellis, the campaign's senior legal advisor, in a statement.

Brann was nominated to his seat by President Barack Obama in 2012. But before that he was for years a Republican Party official in the Keystone State, and was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate's Republican and Democratic and independent members.

His ruling came four days after the Republican president's personal lawyer Giuliani, arguing in a courtroom for the first time in decades, claimed without evidence that Trump had been the victim of "widespread national voter fraud."

Mark Aronchick, an attorney for some of the county election boards whose voting processes were being questioned in the lawsuit, accused Giuliani of talking about "some fantasy world."

"This just is disgraceful!" Aronchick said of Giuliani's arguments during the hearing.

Brann seemed to say as much in his ruling.

"Plaintiffs ask this Court to disenfranchise almost seven million voters," the judge noted.

"This Court has been unable to find any case in which a plaintiff has sought such a drastic remedy in the contest of an election, in terms of the sheer volume of votes asked to be invalidated," Brann wrote.

"One might expect that when seeking such a startling outcome, a plaintiff would come formidably armed with compelling legal arguments and factual proof of rampant corruption, such that this Court would have no option but to regrettably grant the proposed injunctive relief despite the impact it would have on such a large group of citizens.

"That has not happened," Brann wrote.

Biden is currently projected to win 306 votes in the Electoral College, three dozen more than he needs to clinch a win in the White House race.

Trump has refused to concede the contest as he, Giuliani and other Trump surrogates falsely claim he won the election.

At stake in the lawsuit decided Saturday were Pennsylvani's 20 electoral votes, which Biden is set to receive after winning 50% of the popular vote, compared to 48.8% for Trump. Biden holds a more than 80,000-vote margin over Trump in the current ballot count.

The court ruling came a day after Georgia certified its election results, which show a win for Biden there after a hand recount of ballots.

It also came a day after the Republican speaker of the Michigan state house and the GOP majority leader of that state's Senate said that Biden's victory in their own state appears legitimate.

The joint statement by Speaker Lee Chatfield and Majority Leader Mike Shirkey came after they visited the White House at Trump's invitation, and where the president was expected to pressure them to take steps in the legislature to overturn the outcome of Michigan's election, and approve a slate of electors who would vote for Trump in the Electoral College.

"We have not yet been made aware of any information that would change the outcome of the election in Michigan and as legislative leaders, we will follow the law and follow the normal process regarding Michigan's electors, just as we have said throughout this election," the Michigan lawmakers said in a statement.

"Michigan's certification process should be a deliberate process free from threats and intimidation," the statement said.

"The candidates who win the most votes win elections and Michigan's electoral votes. These are simple truths that should provide confidence in our elections."

Federal judge dismisses Trump campaign Pennsylvania lawsuit - CNN

Posted: 21 Nov 2020 06:08 PM PST

Though the case was always extremely unlikely to succeed, President Donald Trump's backers and legal team -- and particularly his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani -- had pinned their hopes on the federal judge in Pennsylvania giving some credibility to their suspicions of fraud and entertaining Trump's attempt to overturn the popular vote for President-elect Joe Biden.
But Judge Matthew Brann, a longtime and well-known Republican in Pennsylvania, refused.
This was essentially the last major case seeking to throw out or block enough votes that could swing a key state in Trump's favor, and Brann's decision on Saturday is the 30th loss or withdrawal of a case from the Trump campaign and its allies since Election Day. There have only been two wins in court, about very small numbers of votes.
"Plaintiffs ask this Court to disenfranchise almost seven million voters. This Court has been unable to find any case in which a plaintiff has sought such a drastic remedy in the contest of an election, in terms of the sheer volume of votes asked to be invalidated," US District Court Judge Matthew Brann wrote Saturday.
Brann went on to admonish the Trump campaign lawyers for not presenting factual proof for seeking to invalidate so many votes in the key battleground state.
"One might expect that when seeking such a startling outcome, a plaintiff would come formidably armed with compelling legal arguments and factual proof of rampant corruption, such that this Court would have no option but to regrettably grant the proposed injunctive relief despite the impact it would have on such a large group of citizens. That has not happened," Brann added. "Instead, this Court has been presented with strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations, unpled in the operative complaint and unsupported by evidence."
"In the United States of America, this cannot justify the disenfranchisement of a single voter, let alone all the voters of its sixth most populated state. Our people, laws, and institutions demand more," the judge wrote." At bottom, Plaintiffs have failed to meet their burden to state a claim upon which relief may be granted."
The counties in the state are scheduled to certify their election results on Monday.
The judge said any further consideration of this issue "would unduly delay resolution of the issues" regarding certification.
This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

No home wins: Man Utd form must improve fast to ease pressure on Solskjaer - Goal

Posted: 21 Nov 2020 06:08 PM PST

There have been four fruitless attempts to win at Old Trafford so far this season and, with West Brom visiting, that has got to get better

As the final whistle went at Goodison Park two weeks ago there was a roar of relief from the Manchester United players on the pitch.

It had been a real backs-against-the-wall, dogged victory against Everton; they had to come from behind and fought for the badge and for the manager after a disappointing result in the Champions League midweek against Istanbul Basaksehir.

The external noises questioning Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's position as manager were getting louder and the presence of Mauricio Pochettino, who had returned to our screens on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football the week before, was not helping matters.

That 3-1 win eased the pressure on Solskjaer but it has not gone away altogether. It's still an irritating background noise.

Goal 50 Revealed: The best 50 players in the world

His job was not - and still is not - under threat. That stance has been reiterated by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who publicly gave his backing to the under-fire Norwegian. But unless they can start to find some consistency then that pressure is never going to disappear.

Solskjaer cut a relaxed figure as he took questions from the media on Friday afternoon. He doesn't come across as a man worried for his job and that's because he continues to plan for the future with his ideas for transfers and conversations with the club hierarchy.

The fact is, he's been in a similar situation a number of times before in his near two-year spell in charge at Old Trafford.

It was only the start of this year that Solskjaer saw his side booed off the pitch after losing 2-0 to Burnley at home. Some had claimed back then that his job would become untenable had they lost to Tranmere in the next fixture.

But they went to Prenton Park and scored six before beating Manchester City, drawing against Wolves and getting a result against Chelsea.

Before that, the spotlight was on Solskjaer after a drab draw against Aston Villa left United with just 18 points from their opening 14 Premier League games in a campaign where they had started with just 10 points after nine matches.

Again, when the stakes were high after that Villa stalemate, they recorded back-to-back wins against Tottenham and Manchester City. This team know how to get results when the odds are stacked against them and the pressure is rising. However, the key to any long-term success and progression is getting a consistency that has so far been lacking.

Seven games into the new league campaign they have failed to record consecutive wins and have yet to register a home victory in the league. Solskjaer downplayed the significance of the poor home form on Friday afternoon.

"Our best win this season was against Leipzig at home," he reminded journalists. "It's something we want to correct and get our first win hopefully against West Brom but it's a different sensation playing in front of the Stretford End without fans, they usually score a goal for us."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Manchester United GFX

Nobody could dispute that but, one good result at Old Trafford in five attempts this season just isn't good enough and a defeat on Saturday evening would mean West Brom, who have yet to win a game this season, would be just three points behind them.

That pressure - which at the moment is just white noise - would be ramping up again. Solskjaer knows what he needs from his team going into another difficult and hectic period.

After the win against Everton he said: "My job now is to make sure that guard is up every time and doesn't drop, and we don't go into any game with a sense of: 'We don't have to work, that it will be easy and we can out-play teams'."

He is expecting a 'difficult' game against Slaven Bilic's side and there will be no let up after it.

Istanbul Basaksehir come to town on Tuesday before tricky away trips to Southampton, West Ham and RB Leipzig, not forgetting a home clash against Paris Saint-Germain, all before the first derby of the season at Old Trafford at the start of December.

The schedule is relentless and unforgiving.

The win against Everton was crucial but it needs to be a springboard to consistency or the questions, doubt and pressure will return even stronger than before.

'Ronaldo sets the example for everyone' – Pirlo hails Juve forward after match-winning double - Goal.com

Posted: 21 Nov 2020 05:42 PM PST

The Portugal ace added another couple of goals to his collection against Cagliari, much to the delight of Juve's under-fire boss

Cristiano Ronaldo was hailed as a born champion by Andrea Pirlo after the superstar forward kept his goalscoring run going with a double in Juventus' 2-0 win over Cagliari.

The Portugal international scored twice in the space of four first-half minutes to take his tally for the season to eight goals in six appearances in all competitions.

In doing so, Ronaldo became the first Juve player to score in each of his first five Serie A outings in one season in the three-points-per-win era.

His match-winning brace came from five attempts and he also laid on three chances for his team-mates, earning praise from head coach Pirlo.

Goal 50 Revealed: The best 50 players in the world

"He is a great professional, as we already knew," Pirlo told DAZN . "He is a real champion and sets the example for everyone around him, both in the matches and in training.

"The only advice I can give him is to keep going in the same way."

Juventus also had a Federico Bernardeschi goal ruled out for offside and tested opposition goalkeeper Alessio Cragno five times in Saturday's clash at the Allianz Stadium.

It was a dominant display from Juve, with nine of their players having at least 60 touches of the ball – only once in the last 15 years, against Bologna in 2018, have they done better.

The defending champions are second after winning four of their eight league outings under Pirlo, who is happy with the way his players are taking on his ideas.

"There's a lot of quality in this squad, but that alone is not enough," he said. "If we are going to dominate games then we have to work the ball quickly from side to side.

"The players enjoy this style of football. When we have possession we have to pin the opposition back.

"We've been trying this pressing game since the first game but have not had much time to work on it. It is about winning back the ball as quickly as possible to keep the pressure."

Arthur completed more passes (101) than any player on the pitch, with an unrivalled 57 of those in the opposition half.

In the week that he scored his first goal for Brazil, Pirlo hailed the former Barcelona midfielder for the way he has quickly adjusted to his new surroundings.

"He is the player we expected. He came from a different league and needed a period of adaptation," he said.

"Now he is better and is a very important player for our games if we are to avoid the opposition press."

Cagliari had a goal of their own ruled out when Ragnar Klavan headed home in the second half but they failed to register a single attempt on target in Turin.

They had previously won four of their last five games in all competitions but Eusebio Di Francesco conceded his side could have no complaints with the result.

"We came with a plan to press Juventus but their superior quality forced us back," he said. "They kept forcing us deep and they was always going to lead to a goal.

"We created more in the second half. We used players with little experience and sometimes that tells."

Moukoko becomes youngest player in Bundesliga history with Dortmund debut - Goal.com

Posted: 21 Nov 2020 05:42 PM PST

The 16-year-old prodigy set a new first in the German top flight when he replaced xxx against Hertha Berlin

Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Youssoufa Moukoko made history on Saturday as he became the youngest player ever to feature in a Bundesliga match.

Moukoko turned 16 on Friday and was immediately included in Dortmund's squad for their league clash away to Hertha Berlin

A rule change in the German top-flight earlier this year has changed the minimum age requirement from 16 and a half to 16, enabling his inclusion on the bench the day after his birthday.

And the young forward appeared in the 85th minute coming on for Erling Halaand, as he replaced the Norwegian, who fired four goals on Saturday, to mark a new Bundesliga record.

Goal 50 Revealed: The best 50 players in the world

At just 16 years and one day, that mark is likely to stand for some time, showing once more Dortmund's commitment to youth.

Moukoko was one of three teenagers to make the bench for Saturday's clash, alongside Jude Bellingham, 17, and 18-year-old Giovanni Reyna, while 20-year-old striking sensation Erling Haaland started for the visitors against Hertha.

Born in Yaounde, Cameroon, where he spent the first 10 years of his life before moving to Hamburg with his father, the prodigy began to play with Dortmund's Under-17 side when he was just 12 after moving from St. Pauli and his appearance in the first team has long been expected despite his tender age.

Former coach Michael Feichtenbeiner is just one of those to have seen Moukoko who predicts big things for the forward.

The ex-Germany U16s coach told Goal and SPOX: "Such a talent does not come along in Germany every five years.

"His football skills are simply outstanding and he is a player who can make all the difference. He scored his goals everywhere - and there will be no end.

"Youssoufa will break many records in the Bundesliga.

"In an environment like Dortmund with so many young players, it's a little easier for him. You can see that in Jude Bellingham, who as a 17-year-old from England seems to have few problems keeping up with the level."

Moukoko has also made an impact at the international level, representing Germany at both U16 and U20 levels

Jamie Carragher spotted what Harry Kane did in Tottenham's win over Manchester City - Football.London

Posted: 21 Nov 2020 05:08 PM PST

Jamie Carragher has singled out Harry Kane for special praise following Tottenham Hotspur's 2-0 win over Manchester City.

Despite not getting on the scoresheet in north London, the England international played a key role as Jose Mourinho's side went top of the Premier League table.

Kane's first-half display was so impressive that Sky Sports co-commentator Gary Neville likened the Spurs striker to that of current Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane.

Video Loading

"He's playing brilliantly in that role, Harry Kane. I'm gonna get mocked for saying this, but there's a little bit of Zidane in him when he gets the ball in that position with how he sort of shields it and protects it," Neville said on commentary.

"Yeah, it's the physicality, the touch in the way he gets the ball, protects it and shields it.

"No-one can get near him.

And now Neville's colleague has got in on the act.

Taking to social media after Spurs' win over Man City was confirmed, Carragher praised Kane's performance by highlighting what may have gone unnoticed about the display

"I love Harry Kane!" Carragher wrote on Twitter.

"So clever with his passing, getting fouls, making fouls, slowing the game down, speaking to the referee."

Kane wasn't able to increase his goal tally to 14 across all competitions so far this season, but he did weigh in with another assist in the second half.

With City piling on the pressure in search of an equaliser, Kane teed up Giovani Lo Celso to score just seconds after coming on to the pitch.

Donald Trump Jr tests positive for COVID-19 - Geelong Advertiser

Posted: 21 Nov 2020 05:08 PM PST

Donald Trump Jr has confirmed he's "got the rona" after testing positive for coronavirus.

The President's son is in isolation in his cabin in upstate New York where he posted a video to his Instagram followers on Friday.

The 42-year-old asked for Netflix and e-book recommendations and said "there are only so many guns I can clean before I get bored".

He claimed he felt fine and that he has been "totally asymptomatic", saying "you wouldn't know it based on anything that I have felt or seen".

"Maybe it's a false positive, maybe not," he said, adding that he would seek more tests.

"I don't have the red eyes like they claimed I had for apparently using cocaine prior to my RNC speech," he added.

However, he said he would "take it seriously" and "follow the regular protocols".

The US president also jumped on social media on Saturday, tweeting, "My son Donald is doing very well. Thank you!"

The President's oldest son tested positive for COVID-19 at the start of the week and has been "quarantining out at his cabin since the result", a spokesman told CBS News.

"He's been completely asymptomatic so far and is following all medically recommended COVID-19 guidelines," the spokesman said.

The 42-year-old had until now managed to escape infection, even after his girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle caught the virus in July and his father in October.

It comes just after Andrew Giuliani, the son of Mr Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, announced he had tested positive.

Other members of Mr Trump's inner circle to have contracted the virus in recent weeks include White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Dr Ben Carson, and top aides David Bossie and Corey Lewandowski.

The US is currently experiencing a fresh rise in COVID-19 cases as the country heads into the holiday season.

The country has recorded more than 1.1 million new cases in the last week, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Presumptive President-elect Joe Biden has warned of a "dark winter" and urged Americans to re-think their Thanksgiving plans.

Earlier this week Mr Biden claimed "more people may die" if Mr Trump continued to delay the transition process. The President has so far refused to concede, claiming the election was "rigged".

Meanwhile, Reuters reported on Friday that drug giant Pfizer was applying to US health regulators for an emergency use authorisation of its COVID-19 vaccine.

At a press conference on Thursday, Mr Biden insisted he would not seek to order a nationwide lockdown.

That came days after his coronavirus adviser, Dr Michael Osterholm, warned of "COVID hell" and advocated a total lockdown "for four to six weeks".

"Everybody asks that question every single time," an annoyed Mr Biden said.

"The answer was I would follow the science. I am not going to shutdown the economy, period. I say it again. No national shutdown. No national shutdown."
