Finland’s government has extended the imposed entry restrictions until December 13, 2020, in a bid to stop the spread of the Coronavirus disease, the country’s Ministry of Interior has announced.

Johns Hopkins University’ recent data show that as of November 19, nearly 19,900 cases of COVID-19 infections were reported in Finland, and 374 deaths.

Finland has the lowest COVID-19 infection rates, compared to the other European countries; therefore, the country’s government is looking to tighten its restrictions, in order to maintain the virus situation under control, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“The acceleration phase of the epidemic continues, and the differences in the epidemic situation between Finland and the rest of Europe are large. Therefore, a relaxation of the restrictions is not justified until the compensatory measures in preparation are sufficiently available,” the report of Finland’s Ministry of Interior reads.

The move applies to the Schengen Zone countries, the non-Schengen EU countries as well as the United Kingdom.

According to the Ministry’s statement, the decision applies to all countries where the rate of the Coronavirus infection rate exceeds 25 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, during the past two weeks before the evaluation takes place.

Authorities in Finland have restricted the entry for internationals wishing to enter in Finland from any of the following countries; the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Iceland, Austria, Latvia, Greece, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Poland, Sweden, France, Slovakia, Germany, Slovenia, Slovakia, Denmark, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Estonia and Hungary.

“However, daily traffic on the land border between Finland and Sweden between border communities is possible,” the statement of the Ministry reads.

Besides, the Finnish authorities have also stressed that commuting is still possible, as well as crossing the Finnish-Norwegian land border for border communities. Moreover, citizens of Sweden and Estonia are eligible to work in Finland without the need to undergo ten days of mandatory quarantine rules.

Finland previously lifted the entry restrictions for the following countries: Vatican, Japan, South Korea, Rwanda, Singapore, New Zealand, Thailand, Japan and Australia.

Citizens of Bulgaria, Andorra, Croatia, Ireland, Monaco, Cyprus, San Mario, Romania and the United Kingdom are also permitted to enter Finland for business or other reasons. However, the ten days quarantine is mandatory for immigrants.

Finland’s government previously announced that it would update its list of restrictions on entry imposed on EU and non-EU citizens weekly, starting from the second week of November.
