Former Christian Brothers Academy and Indiana Hoosiers running back Stevie Scott III will forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft early. Scott announced his decision on Twitter on Friday.
Listed by Indiana at 6-foot-2 and 231 pounds, Scott was known for his strength, something he arrived to Indiana with plenty of. Pushed up the depth chart as a true freshman due to unexpected absences, his first season of college football was actually his most productive with Scott rushing for 1,137 yards on 228 carries and 10 touchdowns.
His next two years features more playmakers around him and more team success, leading Scott to be named Second Team All-Big Ten as both a sophomore and junior. The Hoosiers achieved some of the best results in program history during those two years, including climbing into the Top 10 for the first time in 50 years and finishing No. 12 in the final AP Top 25, the third-best finish in program history.
Scott finishes his career ninth on Indiana’s all-time rushing yardage list (2,543 yards). His strength made him particularly effective at the goal line, and Scott finished fourth on Indiana’s all-time list with 30 rushing touchdowns.
“What a ride it has been, coming to IU from Syracuse has been a life-changing experience for me,” Scott wrote on social media. “I’ve made so many memories and built many relationships on and off the field that I will cherish for a lifetime.
“Changing the culture of Indiana football was a big goal of mind and we did that! I want to thank Coach (Tom) Allen and Coach (Mike) Hart for both believing in me and my potential and helping me prepare for the next chapter. I would like to thank my parents for their sacrifices in order for me to be where I am today.”
Scott’s announcement came days after former Onondaga Central High School star Mike Hart, his recruiter at Indiana, took a job with the University of Michigan.
Scott was a stand-out player at Christian Brothers Academy earning all-state honors as a junior before an injury shortened his senior season. In two full seasons as a sophomore and junior he compiled 2,500 rushing yards and 42 touchdowns for CBA.
Scott is not currently appearing in most high-profile mock drafts, which are primarily focused on the first two rounds, a place where running backs have become less likely to be selected in recent years.
In a recent two-round mock draft produced by The Athletic, for instance, only one running back was selected in the first round (Alabama’s Najee Harris) and one was taken in the second (Clemson’s Travis Etienne).
The NFL draft is scheduled to be held April 29 to May 1 in Cleveland, Ohio.
