WHO says pandemic ‘far from over’ as daily cases hit record high - The Indian Express

New coronavirus cases had their biggest daily increase ever as the pandemic worsens globally and has yet to peak in central America, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday, urging countries to press on with efforts to contains the virus.

"More than six months into the pandemic, this is not the time for any country to take its foot off the pedal," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told an online briefing.

More than 136,000 new cases were reported worldwide on Sunday, the most in a single day so far, he said. Nearly 75% of them were reported from 10 countries, mostly in the Americas and South Asia.

In response to a question on China, WHO's top emergencies expert, Dr. Mike Ryan, said retrospective studies of how the outbreak has been addressed could wait, adding: "We need to focus now on what we are doing today to prevent second peaks."

Ryan also said infections in central American countries including Guatemala were still on the rise, and that they were "complex" epidemics.

"I think this is a time of great concern," he said, calling for strong government leadership and international support for the region.

Brazil is now one of the hotspots of the pandemic, with the second highest number of confirmed cases, behind only the United States, and a death toll that last week surpassed Italy's.

After removing cumulative numbers for coronavirus deaths in Brazil from a national website, the Health Ministry sowed further confusion and controversy by releasing two contradictory sets of figures for the latest tally of infection cases and fatalities.

Ryan said Brazil's data had been "extremely detailed" so far but stressed it was important for Brazilians to understand where the virus is and how to manage risk, and that the WHO hoped communication would be "consistent and transparent".

Maria van Kerkhove, a WHO epidemiologist, said that a "comprehensive approach" was essential in South America.

More than 7 million people have been reported infected with the coronavirus globally and over 400,000 have died.

"This is far from over," van Kerkhove said.

At least half of Singapore's newly discovered coronavirus cases show no symptoms, the co-head of the government's virus taskforce told Reuters on Monday, reinforcing the city-state's decision to ease lockdown restrictions very gradually.

Van Kerkhove said that many countries doing contact tracing had identified asymptomatic cases but were not finding that they caused further spread of the virus, adding: "It is very rare".

Ryan, asked about technical cooperation with the United States after President Donald Trump's announcement 10 days ago that it was terminating its relationship with the WHO, said the WHO relies heavily on experts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health.

"We will continue to do that until we are otherwise instructed or informed," he added.

Highlights From Barack and Michelle Obama's Virtual Graduation Speech - WWD

Posted: 08 Jun 2020 09:08 PM PDT

Former president Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama headlined YouTube's "Dear Class of 2020" virtual graduation ceremony on Sunday, which celebrated the achievements of high school and college seniors who had their own graduation ceremonies canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The couple gave separate commencement speeches during the four-hour livestream where they offered students words of hope and reflection regarding the ongoing protests over the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, and the challenges young people are facing in today's tumultuous political and social climate.

The virtual graduation ceremony also included speeches by the likes of Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, among others.

Here are seven highlights from the Obamas' commencement speeches, where they spoke about the protests, racial inequality, COVID-19 and more.

1. The Coronavirus Pandemic

"What these last few weeks have also shown us is that the challenges we face go well beyond a virus and that the old normal wasn't good enough. It wasn't working that well and in a lot of ways the pandemic just brought into focus problems that had been going for a very long time, whether it's widening economic inequality, the lack of basic health care for millions of people, the continuing scourge of bigotry and sexism or the divisions and disfunction that plague our political system." — President Obama

2. Today's Social and Political Climate

"While this period is certainly unprecedented, it is not a compete anomaly; simply some random coincidence to be dismissed. What's happening right now is the direct result of decades of unaddressed prejudice and inequality. The truth is that all those tiny stories of hard work and self-determination that we like to tell ourselves about America, well the reality is a lot more complicated than that because for too many people in this country no matter how hard they work, there are structural barriers working against them that just make the road longer and rockier." — Michelle Obama

3. The Protests

"The protests and response to the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery and Nina Pop aren't simply a reaction to those particular tragedies, as heartbreaking as they are. They speak to decades worth of anguish and frustration over unequal treatment and failure to reform police practices and the broader criminal justice system. These shocks to the system that we're seeing right now, just as you prepare to go out into the world, they remind us that we can't take things for granted." — President Obama

4. A Wake-up Call

"What we finally do have is focus. We see what's happening in stark relief, we see how these inequalities are playing out on our streets. It's not just the communities most affected by these challenges that see it now, it's folks all across the country who for too long have had the luxury and privilege of looking away. We all have no choice but to see what has been staring us in the face for years, for centuries." — Michelle Obama

5. Coming Together

"Our individual wellbeing depends on the wellbeing of the community we live in. It doesn't matter how much money you make if everyone around you is hungry and sick. It reminds you that our country and our democracy only function when we think not just of ourselves but also about each other." — President Obama

6. Speaking Out

"For those of you that feel invisible, please know that your story matters, your ideas matter, your experiences matter, your vision for what our world can and should be matters, so don't ever let anyone tell you that you're too angry or you should keep your mouth shut. There will always be those that want to keep you silent, to have you be seen but not heard. Maybe they don't even want to see you at all, but those people don't know your story and if you listen to them then nothing will ever change." — Michelle Obama

7. Call for Change

"As scary and uncertain as these times may be, they are also a wake-up call and they are an incredible opportunity for your generation because you don't have to accept what was considered normal before. You don't have to accept the world as it is. You can make it into the world as it should be and could be. You can create a new normal, one that is fairer and gives everybody opportunity and treats everyone equally and builds bridges between people instead of dividing them." — President Obama

Newlyweds Join Philly Black Lives Matter March in Viral Video - NBC 10 Philadelphia

Posted: 08 Jun 2020 08:47 PM PDT

A bride and groom have newfound Internet fame after they were caught on video stepping out for their "first look" moment and showing their support for the Black Lives Matter movement during a massive demonstration in Philadelphia.

Dr. Kerry-Anne Perkins married Michael Gordon in the garden of the Logan Hotel in Center City on Saturday. Before officially tying the knot, the couple stepped out for their first look at each other as thousands of protesters marched in honor of George Floyd.

"I walk up to her, I grab her hands and her hands are shaking," Gordon said. "She's trembling."

Demonstrators applauded and cheered the couple as they kissed.

"She had some tears running down her face, even though all this was going on around us, I was only focused on her," Gordon said. "I just kind of looked around like there's a lot of people here."

In a moment that later took the Internet by storm, the couple raised their fists in solidarity with the cheering protesters.

After posing for more wedding photos and officially tying the knot, the couple joined the protesters as they walked toward City Hall.

The video of the couple caught the attention of everyone from Oprah Winfrey to Vogue Magazine.

The couple said their wedding was originally planned for mid-March but had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Dr. Perkins is a gynecologic surgeon still serving on the front lines of the pandemic. She told NBC10 that while the ceremony was smaller than they initially wanted, it wasn't any less memorable.

"It was so deep that it makes me think that I could even tear up again and cry all over again," she said. "Because I feel it. I see him walking through. I feel the love and emotion that I felt at the time when I saw him overwhelmed. I feel it all over again."

For the couple, the moment not only represented their love but also a unifying change happening across the world.

"This right here just says a lot and to me it was a representation of the movement," Dr. Perkins said. "Same thing when we held up our fist. It was a representation of the movement."

A squirrel has proved the old adage that where there is a will, there's a way. However, the way in which the rodent managed to surpass the obstacle has left the netizens in awe.

Police unions dig in as calls for reform grow - CNN

Posted: 08 Jun 2020 07:08 PM PDT

Like all criminal defendants, Philadelphia Police Staff Inspector Joseph Bologna is innocent until proven guilty. But it seemed like the crowd of more than 100 applauding officers already made up their minds, despite viral footage of Bologna hitting the student in the back of the head with a metal baton, sending him to the hospital.
Following the rally, the union that represents Bologna issued a statement, saying it "will not stand-by and watch Inspector Bologna get railroaded."
As public opinion shifts on issues of police violence and racial discrimination, and cities begin to rethink their approach to law enforcement, powerful police unions across the country are digging in, and preparing for a once-in-a-generation showdown over policing.
The flashpoint has been seemingly brewing for years and has flared in intensity with each high-profile police killing involving an African American. Elected officials, facing more pressure than ever after last month's police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, are pledging to take action.
"Let me be clear, we're going after the police union," Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said Monday on ABC's Good Morning America, after members of the city council said they wanted to go even further and dismantle the local police department to pursue other models of policing.
But that might be easier said than done. Police unions in the US wield significant power and enjoy higher membership rates than many other unions, which have declined in recent years. Government officials and labor experts also tell CNN that police union contracts often make it tougher to remove officers that have been flagged for misconduct -- a key roadblock to reform.
"They've become far too powerful. They form political action committees. They donate to district attorneys' race or state attorneys' race, state senators and representatives and so forth," Charles Ramsey, a former DC police chief and former Philadelphia police commissioner, said Sunday on CNN. "And then we wonder why you can't get anything done."
For the first time, police unions will need to grapple with a skeptical public that doesn't automatically support law enforcement. New polls indicate that most Americans now acknowledge that African Americans are more likely to be mistreated or even killed by police.
"This is big," legendary GOP pollster Frank Luntz tweeted on Monday about a dramatic shift in how Americans are viewing police violence. After Eric Garner died in police custody in 2014, 33% of Americans said they believed police were more likely to use excessive force against African Americans. That figure now stands at 57%, according to a poll from last week.
In response to the public sentiment over the past two weeks, Jim Pasco, executive director of the national Fraternal Order of Police, the largest law enforcement union in the country, told CNN that his organization is willing to sit down with "anybody, anytime who wants to have a fact-based discussion" on public and police safety, and that these discussions were ongoing.

'Corrosive' police culture

For years, lawmakers from both parties passed police-friendly laws and empowered police unions in their cities. But in this moment, there could be limited opening for bipartisanship.
"We need reform in the area of the police unions to make sure that the chief can actually have disciplinary control over the force," said Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who is personally handling the prosecution of the four police officers involved in Floyd's death.
House Democrats unveiled a sweeping proposal on Monday to address racial disparities in policing. The bill would establish a national registry for police misconduct, among other things.
It's not clear that any Republicans will support that bill, but some are breaking from President Donald Trump's hardline stance toward the protests, which he has focused on more than Floyd's killing. Utah Sen. Mitt Romney marched in a Black Lives Matter protest over the weekend in Washington, DC.
And the Texas Public Policy Foundation, a conservative think tank, released a report last year that said many police unions "run counter to the best practices of professional law enforcement standards" and are more concerned with sustaining the union than with promoting public safety.
Ronal Serpas, the former police chief in New Orleans and Nashville, said unions nationwide have successfully negotiated for control over disciplinary processes, creating a "corrosive" culture where problematic officers know their union will protect them from consequences.
"To change police culture, we have to change the way contracts are handled," said Serpas, who oversaw police reforms in New Orleans after years of corruption and after Hurricane Katrina.
Decades of collective bargaining has resulted in police forces where department chiefs have little control, and the unions have set the terms for internal investigations. Even if an officer is formally punished, nuances in the contract often help officers prevail on appeal, Serpas said.
For instance, some police union agreements have outlined how long police leadership must wait to investigate an incident, how they can ask the police officers questions and what they can ask, and how quickly the department must complete an investigation. Taken together, it puts the disciplinary power in the hands of the unions, which are set up to protect police officers' jobs.
Sometimes, police officers of color face discrimination within their own departments, and police unions have been complicit in allowing these inequalities to fester and survive, experts tell CNN.
As local governments look to pass new reforms, they'll need to rewrite many of these policies and claw back some of the powers they've ceded to the police unions, Serpas explained.
"The unions are doing what they are supposed to be doing -- finding ways to protect their employees," Serpas said. "They'll go as far as the local government will let them go."

Taking action in New York

New York, home to the largest police department in the country, has sprung into action.
Answering a question Monday from CNN's Mark Morales on police unions and reform, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that "every union argues the interest of their employees, their workforce," and that he will "listen to all voices," including the unions, as he pushes reforms.
Lawmakers in New York are moving forward this week with a series of measures to address police misconduct. This includes repealing a state law commonly known as 50-A, which prevents the public from seeing disciplinary records for officers, including those who kill civilians.
Activists have said this law has made it harder to hold abusive police officers accountable, while police unions have said that this change could jeopardize the privacy of individual officers. Cuomo cast those concerns aside Monday, saying the bill includes ample privacy protections.
"All its doing is reversing an exemption on police records, so now a police officer is like a schoolteacher," Cuomo said. "It's just parity and equality with every other public employee."
The legislation is being taken up by the Democrat-controlled state legislature, along with other bills that would establish a new office under the New York attorney general to investigate police misconduct, and also would require officers to turn on their body cameras in specific situations.
The spotlight in this state isn't only on efforts by the New York Police Department to enforce curfews and maintain order in New York City. Last week, two officers from the Buffalo Police Department were charged with assault after allegedly shoving an elderly man at a protest.
After the officers were suspended, all 57 members of the police force's emergency response team resigned from that team. The local union said they quit in solidarity with the two officers, though some officers told local news outlets that the union's public statements weren't accurate.
"The Buffalo police union is on the wrong side of history, they are wrong in this situation, they have been a barrier to further police reform in the city of Buffalo and that barrier that the police union presents needs to be addressed," Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said Saturday on CNN.

Unions flex their muscle

While union membership has declined nationally, membership among law enforcement remains high. Those membership dues can be funneled toward litigation, support for political candidates or lobbying on legislation that can impact police forces. Police unions also say they work to secure better pay and benefits for officers, and that they have a duty to defend their members.
"Police unions have a tremendous amount of influence," said Jonathan Smith, executive director of the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, and a former Justice Department official who worked on police issues. "There's a lot of police officers in this country and the dues accumulate a large war chest that can be used to enhance their political agenda."
Local officials have also benefited from endorsements and donations from police unions, making it less politically palatable for some officials to try to take on police unions or cases involving individual officers.
In an interview with the New York Times, one Minneapolis city councilman even recently compared the local police union to a "protection racket" that slows down services in areas with unfriendly officials. A spokesman for the Minneapolis Police Department declined to comment on the accusation to the Times.
To flex their political muscle, police unions have used aggressive and at-times threatening rhetoric to attack elected officials who were trying to rein in their local police departments.
The head of a St. Louis police union said last year that the city's chief prosecutor, an African American woman, should be removed "by force or by choice" because she was supposedly sowing distrust of law enforcement. And after an attempted assassination of NYPD officers in February, a major police union in New York City said its members were "declaring war" on liberal-leaning Mayor Bill de Blasio because they blame him for creating a dangerous climate for police officers.
In 2016, the Fraternal Order of Police threw its support behind then-candidate Trump. The organization counts more than 300,000 members nationwide.
In an interview with the Washington Post last year, Pascos said, "I would say at least 80% of our membership nationwide is solidly supportive of President Trump."
Across the country, the actual work of a police union can be much more mundane than it appears in this moment, when tensions are high after a spate of high-profile incidents.
Like other labor unions, police unions will advocate for better benefits and workplace conditions for their members, through collective bargaining. When officers face issues, ranging from citizens' complaints to criminal charges, the police union will often provide legal representation.
Brian Luciano, the president of the Police Benevolent Association in Virginia Beach, Virginia, said police officers facing accusations of misconduct can often become victims of political considerations and a public rush to judgment. Police unions will step in to make sure that officers in trouble get the same consideration as a civilian under arrest, Luciano said.
"Municipalities don't always have the officers' best interest at heart. They will do what's expedient for them for their political purposes," Luciano said. "We see our role as protecting the rights of the accused. And in some cases, the accused is the police officer."
As the political winds change, police unions are set to face more scrutiny than ever. Some union leaders, like Edward Mullins, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association in New York City, say that politicians are changing their views about policing for political expediency.
"The elected officials who are now anti-police almost all of them have taken money from police unions," Mullins said. "They were all pro-law enforcement until they realized November is coming up. Now because the narrative is anti-police and they are becoming anti-cop, you really have to question that. If you're trying to make changes now, why did it take riots to get you to do something that should have been done a long time ago?"

COVID-19 in Arizona: State officials press hospitals to activate emergency plans - Cronkite News

Posted: 08 Jun 2020 07:08 PM PDT

PHOENIX – Arizona's state health officials urged hospitals to fully activate emergency plans to cope with a surge of COVID-19 patients in a Saturday letter, the Arizona Republic reports. Dr. Cara Christ asked hospitals to prepare for crisis care and suspend elective surgeries if they face any shortages in capacity.

An executive order from Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey calls for expanding hospital bed capacity by 25% and then 50% as the state moves through phases of preparedness, but it's unclear if hospitals have implemented plans to do so. A trade association for hospitals asked those standards to be relaxed in mid-April, the Republic reported.

Arizona's largest health system, Banner Health, has reported a rapid increase in hospitalizations and intensive care unit admissions for patients with COVID-19, threatening to put the state's facilities at maximum capacity.

Characterizing Banner ICUs as "very busy," Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Marjorie Bessel told reporters Friday that 50 percent of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Arizona are in a Banner facility and issued a warning.

"If these trends of increased cases continue, Banner will soon need to exercise its surge plan to increase ICU capacity," Bessel said. "Capacity is determined by beds, staffing and resources needed to care for critically ill patients."

As of Monday, June 8, the Arizona Department of Health Services reported 27,678 cases of COVID-19 and 1,047 deaths in the state. It said 402,660 tests for COVID-19 have been completed as of Monday in public and private labs in Arizona, and 6.87% of tests have come back positive for the virus.

According to Bessel, Banner hospitals have been load-balancing in order to not stress any one hospital. "This means that we transfer patients and resources between Banner facilities to meet the needs of the community," Bessel said.

The statistic Bessel is most concerned with is the increase of COVID-19 patients requiring ventilators. As of Thursday, Banner reported 119 Arizona COVID-19 patients on ventilators, nearly 20 percent of the state's total number of patients on ventilators.

Hospital real estate and specialized health equipment aren't the only COVID-19 defenses that are wearing thin.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services official Dr. Robert Kadlec told CNN that the drug remdesivir, which has been proven to reduce the length of COVID-19 patients' hospital stays, will be depleted by the end of June.

Kadlec told CNN that the maker of remdesivir, Gilead Sciences, will send out the government's final shipment of the drug some time during the week of June 29.

According to CNN, Gilead Sciences has "plans to have more than 500,000 treatment courses available by October, and more than a million by December. But, until then, Kadlec said the government is helping Gilead Sciences with some of its logistical challenges in producing the drug, but is still waiting to hear the expected availability of remdesivir in July.

Navajo casinos push back opening date

The Navajo Gaming board announced Thursday it would push back the opening of Navajo casinos in northern Arizona and New Mexico. Navajo casinos were originally scheduled to reopen June 8 but that date is now July 5. As reported by Navajo Times, a number of measures will be taken in preparing the casinos for reopening including employee training on infection and disease, facility cleaning and sanitizing.

Northern Arizona University adjusts fall semester schedule

In order to reduce the spread of COVID-19, Northern Arizona University has tweaked its fall 2020 semester to start and end earlier than in years past. NAU announced the fall semester will begin Aug. 12 and end Nov. 25, prior to Thanksgiving. The semester was originally slated to begin Aug. 24. NAU President Rita Cheng said in a letter to students, "Our goal is to take advantage of a period of expected lower COVID-19 case rates, exceptional weather for encouraging outdoor activities, and lower rates of student travel prior to any potential resurgence of the virus."

Arizona heat-relief providers adapt to COVID-19

Last year, 197 people died in Maricopa County due to heat. This year, due to COVID-19,people and organizations that provide heat-relief to the homeless and vulnerable are having to adjust their services. Cronkite News reports St. Vincent de Paul reduced its shelter's capacity from 150 to 40 people.

Mesa doctor testing COVID-19 therapy to limit the use of ventilators

Dr. Thomas Ardiles is testing a nitric oxide therapy for COVID-19 treatment, the East Valley Tribune reports. Ardiles said he uses a system called the INOpulse that targets areas of the lungs with nitric oxide, which increases blood flow, speeding up recovery. Ardiles said the hopes for this therapy are to keep patients off ventilators.

Husband of woman in viral racist tirade video gives different side of story on what happened - FOX 10 News Phoenix

Posted: 08 Jun 2020 06:47 PM PDT

On Monday, the husband of a woman whose racist tirade at a North Phoenix gas station was caught in a now-viral video spoke out about the incident.

The man who filmed the video, Greg Conn, says an older white woman stormed inside and demanded help when her gas pump didn't work at the station located near Seventh Street and Greenway.

Conn says she then told another woman who was being helped at the front counter, identified as Karina Rodriguez, to "go back to Mexico." In the video, both women get into an argument and the older woman grabs Rodriguez who then slaps her.

Husband claims his wife has mental health concerns

Bob Harrian, who is the husband of the woman in the now-notorious video, offered an explanation on what happened.

Harrian said for over a year, his wife has developed paranoia and signs of fabrication following a break-in incident, and it has been happening in front of family members, friends, and members of their local church. The level of paranoia has also created episodes of mental health concerns.

Harrian said he has tried to get treatment for his wife, but has failed at doing so. He said he was astounded by the video, but also said this might be the proof that he needs to explain to his wife that she can be a detriment to herself.

"Karina, I don't know what to say. I'm just so sorry," Harrian said, in an emotional message to the woman on the receiving end of the tirade in the video. "I'm just so sorry that this happened. You never walked into that store thinking something like this was going to happen. I understand, and I'm sorry. I'm sorry for what she said. It was very hateful. It was -- it's indefensible, but I just have to tell you this. It's her mental illness. A year ago, she would never done -- never have even thought of that."

Harrian said a crisis management team was at their home on Monday. Harrian also said he will not sue the woman who slapped his wife in the video.

'Turbo Timo' Werner gives new-look Chelsea goal threat - Yahoo Sports

Posted: 08 Jun 2020 06:42 PM PDT

Timo Werner is set to join Chelsea (AFP Photo/Odd ANDERSEN)

London (AFP) - When Timo Werner seals his imminent move from RB Leipzig to Chelsea, the German's turbulent rise from national pariah to one of Europe's most feared forwards will be complete.

Chelsea are willing to meet the 60 million euro (£53 million, $67 million) release clause in Werner's contract despite the economic crisis caused by coronavirus.

But for the pandemic, Werner could have been lining up for Liverpool next season after the 24-year-old admitted to being flattered by Jurgen Klopp's interest.

However, Liverpool, concerned by the financial fallout from the virus, were not willing to pay Werner's release clause before it expired this month.

So instead Chelsea are set to add some much-needed firepower to Frank Lampard's revamped attack next season.

The Germany international has scored 31 goals for Leipzig in all competitions this season, including four in five games since the Bundesliga returned last month.

Werner has already proved he can trouble Premier League defences. He played an influential role as Leipzig thrashed Tottenham in the Champions League last 16, bagging the only goal of the first leg from the penalty spot.

Michael Ballack knows exactly what it takes to shine in the Premier League after leaving Germany and the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich midfielder believes Werner has the qualities required to adapt to English football.

"I think it's a good decision for both sides. For Timo, because he fits there, because the way (Chelsea) play football suits him," Ballack said.

"He is a robust player, is very fast, but he is also physically good in a duel and he will quickly get used to it."

The fanfare around Werner comes just two years after his reputation had taken a major hit amid World Cup misery and diving accusations.

That storm was a far cry from Werner's humble upbringing in Stuttgart, where his father Guenther Schuh played at the amateur level.

Mario Gomez, an icon at Stuttgart, was Werner's hero as a child and fuelled his dreams of playing for his hometown club.

He fulfilled that ambition in 2013, becoming Stuttgart's youngest ever debutant aged 17 and their youngest scorer when he netted three times in his first 10 appearances.

- 'You have to do more' -

Earning the nickname 'Turbo Timo' because of his electric pace, which he attributes to running up mountains with his father as a child, Werner has been clocked at 11.1 seconds over 100 metres.

"When I was younger it quickly became clear to me that if you want to become a professional, you have to do more," he said.

Werner became the youngest player to make 50 Bundesliga appearances, but despite his goals, Stuttgart were relegated in 2016.

That convinced Werner to accept an offer to join newly-promoted Leipzig -- an unpopular decision not just to the spurned Stuttgart faithful but German football public at large given the anger at Leipzig's rise thanks to the backing of Red Bull.

Slammed for a lack of loyalty, Werner found himself public enemy number one when a blatant dive against Schalke enraged fans and pundits alike in 2016.

The unassuming Werner rebuilt his confidence to head to the 2018 World Cup as Germany's leading striker, but failed to score in three games as the holders crashed out at the first hurdle for the first time since 1938.

Seeking help from a sports psychologist, Werner showed his maturity by using the backlash to fuel his development.

"He told me that I could silence everyone who doesn't like me by doing just one thing: scoring," Werner told Focus magazine at the time.

Werner's mission was quickly accomplished as his goals fired Leipzig into the Champions League, earning widespread admiration just months after he had been pilloried by the critics.

With 92 goals in all competitions since joining Leipzig, Werner should add the goal threat Chelsea have often lacked this season.

After a blistering start to the campaign, Tammy Abraham's form had stagnated before the virus lockdown, with an ankle injury hampering his progress.

Werner's ability to cut in from the left or play through the middle offers options to complement Abraham and Olivier Giroud as Chelsea look to take the next step in their development under Lampard.

Asymptomatic spread of coronavirus is 'very rare,' WHO says - CNBC

Posted: 08 Jun 2020 06:08 PM PDT

Coronavirus patients without symptoms aren't driving the spread of the virus, World Health Organization officials said Monday, casting doubt on concerns by some researchers that the disease could be difficult to contain due to asymptomatic infections.

Some people, particularly young and otherwise healthy individuals, who are infected by the coronavirus never develop symptoms or only develop mild symptoms. Others might not develop symptoms until days after they were actually infected.

Preliminary evidence from the earliest outbreaks indicated that the virus could spread from person-to-person contact, even if the carrier didn't have symptoms. But WHO officials now say that while asymptomatic spread can occur, it is not the main way it's being transmitted.

"From the data we have, it still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual," Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of WHO's emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, said at a news briefing from the United Nations agency's Geneva headquarters. "It's very rare."

Government responses should focus on detecting and isolating infected people with symptoms, and tracking anyone who might have come into contact with them, Van Kerkhove said. She acknowledged that some studies have indicated asymptomatic or presymptomatic spread in nursing homes and in household settings.

More research and data are needed to "truly answer" the question of whether the coronavirus can spread widely through asymptomatic carriers, Van Kerkhove added.

"We have a number of reports from countries who are doing very detailed contact tracing," she said. "They're following asymptomatic cases. They're following contacts. And they're not finding secondary transmission onward. It's very rare."

If asymptomatic spread proves to not be a main driver of coronavirus transmission, the policy implications could be tremendous. A report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published on April 1 cited the "potential for presymptomatic transmission" as a reason for the importance of social distancing.

"These findings also suggest that to control the pandemic, it might not be enough for only persons with symptoms to limit their contact with others because persons without symptoms might transmit infection," the CDC study said.

To be sure, asymptomatic and presymptomatic spread of the virus appears to still be happening, Van Kerkhove said but remains rare. That finding has important implications for how to screen for the virus and limit its spread.

"What we really want to be focused on is following the symptomatic cases," Van Kerkhove said. "If we actually followed all of the symptomatic cases, isolated those cases, followed the contacts and quarantined those contacts, we would drastically reduce" the outbreak.

Correction: An earlier headline should have said most asymptomatic coronavirus patients aren't spreading new infections. The word "most" was inadvertedly omitted.

Behavioral interventions tied to less urgent care antibiotic use

Implementation of behavioral "nudges" targeting non–guideline-concordant antibiotic prescribing helped reduce inappropriate prescribing for respiratory tract infections at three California urgent care centers (UCCs), researchers reported last week in Open Forum Infectious Diseases.

The study by researchers from Eisenhower Health, the University of California-Davis, and the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine looked at prescribing rates for acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) at the high-volume rural UCCs before and after the implementation of three behavioral interventions: physician/patient education, public commitment, and peer comparison. The peer comparison intervention involved sending individual prescribing data and a blinded ranking email to providers.

The interventions were based on work from the MITIGATE study, which found that stewardship interventions tailored to the local site and setting reduced antibiotic prescribing for ARTIs by a third. An interrupted time series analysis (ITS) compared prescribing for ARTIs at the urgent care centers over a 16-month period before the intervention and 6 months during the intervention, a period that covered two flu seasons.

The analysis found a lower percentage of antibiotic-inappropriate prescribing during the intervention-period (58.5%) flu season (2018-19) than during the pre–intervention-period (73%) flu season (2017-18), resulting in an absolute 14.5% decrease in inappropriate prescribing for ARTIs, or about 981 prescriptions averted. The ITS analysis revealed that the estimated mean percent of antibiotic-inappropriate prescribing for ARTI decreased by 2.2% per month during the intervention period, compared with –0.71% during the pre-intervention period.

"The observed decrease in antibiotic-inappropriate prescribing for ARTI in this study suggests that utilizing a behavioral science approach may improve judicious use of antibiotics in community UCCs," the authors concluded.

Higher US flu vaccine coverage linked to lower antibiotic prescribing

In another new study in Open Forum Infectious Diseases, researchers from the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy in Washington, DC, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore found that increased influenza vaccination uptake was associated with state-level reductions in antibiotic use.

Using state-level monthly data on the number of dispensed antibiotic prescriptions from a large prescription drug database and seasonal flu vaccination coverage data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's FluVaxView database, the researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of US flu vaccination coverage and antibiotic prescribing rates from 2010 through 2017. They used a fixed-effects regression analysis to analyze the relationship between vaccine coverage rates and the number of antibiotic prescriptions per 1,000 residents from January to March of each year. They also looked at the impact of vaccination on prescribing by age-group.

After controlling for access to healthcare, socioeconomic differences, vaccine effectiveness, climate, and state-level differences, the researchers found a significant negative association between increased influenza vaccination rates and antibiotic use rates.

A ten-percentage point increase in vaccine coverage was associated with 6.5% reduction in prescription rates, equivalent to 14.2 fewer antibiotic prescriptions per 1,000 individuals (95% confidence interval [CI], 6.0 to 22.4, P = 0.001). Increased vaccination coverage reduced prescribing rates in the pediatric population (0 to 18 years) by 6.0% or 15.2 prescriptions per 1,000 individuals (95% CI, 9.0 to 21.3; P < 0.001), and in those over 65 years by 5.2% or 12.8 prescriptions per 1,000 individuals (95% CI, 6.5 to 19.2, P < 0.001).

"Substantially boosting seasonal influenza vaccination coverage should be a central element of efforts to reduce use of antibiotics," the authors of the study wrote.

Hannah Gamble, from Artis Studios, said: "With everything that has been going on over the last few months I wanted to give something back to the NHS and show our appreciation to them. I sometimes feel they do not get the recognition they truly deserve for what they do for our country.
